Ive heard of a dual boot operating system on the iphone, this must somehow bypass the integrity check, a Norwegian has set up a system similar to boot camp allowing you to boot up the operating system of your choice, cant you guys run a system similar to this where one system is legit, and the other can be the unlocked modified baseband code. Although total control of the S5L is already had with the Pwnage 2 bootrom bug, the baseband chip is a different thing. It is like another computer in the iPhone, and you cannot unlock just because you can jailbreak.

thanks god, you are not selfish... how about reading the ipod manual, there a lots of things you can do with it, ... try to be patient... or sell your iPod ;-) I bought a brick ... although I can't do anything with it it was much cheaper ;-)

The 3G users don't have anything except a jailbroken iPod touch right now. The dev team is trying to make an unlock so that 3G users can actually USE their phone..

On the other hand, I would guess that they are working on both. It has never been like the dev team to just post everyday just letting people know that they still haven't found anything... Believe it or not, if there hasn't been a break through, there's nothing to post! Also, They said in a former post that the Touch 2G and the 3G unlock are closely related. Let them be to do what they do.

So you were able to neuter the BootLoader - the same way 1G phones are unlocked?

If so, then does that mean the biggest hurdle - running unsigned code at boot is crossed, and now you get to work on modifying the baseband so it skips any kind of carrier check?

what exactly does this mean i thought you were able to modify the baseband the whole time i thought thats what the last post was you modifiying the baseband and it crashing could you please help me understand how this helps with the 3g unlock as i am not iphone baseband savy = )

As far as I can tell, in the last update they were able to make it malfunction to the point of crashing, which, had it been a reproduceable exploit, would have allowed them to modify it. BUT it seems as though they were able to either reproduce that exploit or find an easier way of making the baseband shut down giving them the opportunity to modify it. So, this means that the task of hacking into the baseband has been has been defeated which gives them the opportunity to try different ways of unlocking the device without having to retrace their steps to try and hack the baseband over and over again. Again, this is just how I understand it. I could be way off.

I don't have a 3G, so it doesn't REALLY matter to me either way, but I disagree. Once again, unless users register for a plan with an authorized service provider, they have only half of the intended functionality of their "phone". In my opinion, that makes the 3G users more 'important'. The iPod 2G users can still use their iPods, and all the features that are intended to be used.

Has it came to thought that maybe the locked state is controlled by the OS rather than the baseband?
Because I have heard that the official unlock process (activation) happens really fast and maybe it hasn't even flashed the seczone but just changed some file in the OS?
By business logic, it would make sense to do that to keep the keys to the doors in their own hands rather than others(Infinion).

Both the s5l and sgold CPUs have their part to play in the unlock. But the s5l is already jailbroken so that shouldn't pose a problem.

It was about 2.5 months for 3.9BL unlock, and about 3 months for the 4.6BL unlock.

yes, because unlocking the phone would mean that the baseband chip completely ignores the unlock status of the phone. currently available hardware unlocks support edge, 3g, etc. too, now

why didn't you just buy one of those SIM chips on ebay? the newest generation even supports 3G and EDGE networks and they're plug&play. no SIM card cutting, no programming.

I was reading somewhere (either on this blog or another) that the sim-unlocking-chips are somewhat illegal. After reading the article, it was to my understandind that the sim-chips hack into the actual cellular network versus hacking into the device. The difference being is the cellular network is owned by AT&T so it's illegal to modify it and the device is something you paid for so you own it and more or less have the right to do whatever you want to it. I think that's why most people are straying from the sim-chips, but I could be wrong.

I think I made some interesting strides with my 3g iphone, right now I can use it with any sim on the network it was activated on. I am not sure if that something you can exploit or not, please contact me if this might be helpful, or if you already know about it. It also doesn't give me a bad sim message on it. Well nice to see the 3g progress but the progress is so slow... theoretically, yes. meaning it is possible, if done by a sufficiently talented hacker and programmer, since the bluetooth chip has no restrictions, and it "doesn't care" whether you're just sending/receiving data from a bluetooth headset or another cellphone.

BUT it's so incredibly complicated that I doubt it will come up in the near future.
making a bluetooth app would mean getting used to the bluetooth chip, figuring out and cracking authentication, writing a good interface, setting up stable data transfer, and a lot of other things that I don't even know about.

just forget it, and if it ever happens, you'll be positively surprised.

The guys from hong kong unlocked the 3g using a serial-number-specific code from Apple. So the code doesn't work from a phone to another. We don't know the algorthm to generate it and bruteforcing it would be imposible. Our lives won't be enough for it.

I don't understand a lot about the process, but this sounds like a major step towards unlocking.
does this mean that you can now run any modified code on the baseband and even though it fails the integrity ceck, it keeps on working with the OS (as not as it's not critically fucking things up)? (sorry if it's a dumb question, but that video doesn't really explain a lot to me)

if that's true, then wow. you're almost there. but: will you attempt to make the chip accept every SIM as a test SIM, similar to the way the Hardware unlocks work, or will you attempt to make the chip completely accept any SIM? I'm just really curious...

As I see the baseband 01.45 seems to be very old (probably the first 3g firmware 2.0 had it?)
Are there problems with newer baseband versions? For example 2.0.2s 02.08.01? Or the even newer 2.1s baseband version 2.11.07?

I think most of the users are at least at firmware 2.02? Will there be problems downgrading? Should everyone on older firkware versions stop upgrading?

I think that the dev team is looking only at the 01.45 baseband. Any upgrade may cause your unlock to take more time.

Because the baseband updates happen so frequently, and because it's so large, it seems reasonable to concentrate on exploiting one version first. There are methods for downgrading from at least some of the later versions to 1.45, but we're considering that to be a secondary issue. But ideally, anyone who's got an iPhone 3G without service (because they need an unlock) has used pwnage to avoid the baseband updates.

(And for what it's worth, the 1.45 baseband doesn't seem to have any problems working even with the 2.2beta1 firmware.)

As I wrote most of the 3G-users already bougt at least a phone with the 2.02 firmware/ 02.08.01 baseband...

SImplest advice would be to use full pwnage, and make sure that the "update baseband" option is not selected. I.e., if you ultimately want your 3G to be unlocked, keep the baseband at whatever version it came with. If and when there's an unlock, it will be for the lower baseband versions first.

Thankfully, so far there's been no apparent loss in functionality for these 3G iPhones that have been kept at baseband 1.45 (the main firmware has been updated normally, and it gets along fine with 1.45 baseband).

Of course, if all you care about is the jailbreak, or if you have a 2G iPhone that needs both jailbreak and unlock, then use whatever flavor of pwnage you'd like without any regard to baseband issues.

worst thing is, you can't even downgrade the iPhone's firmware once you're on 2.1, and that update also installs a new baseband firmware. whatever you do, DON'T update to 2.1, or you'll be screwed

You can downgrade the main firmware from 2.1. It's only iTunes backwards incompatibilities that can get in the way, so you just need to use prior versions of iTunes sometimes too.

Also, if you update to 2.1 via a custom IPSW with baseband update disabled, you can be at 2.1 without latest baseband installed.

The different types of turbosims have a small software on it, which performs the unlock.
Isn't it possible to have such a small program on the phone which shall do the same thing as the microchip on the turbosim?

Nik: The turbosim solution is illegal in many countries due to what it causes the phone to broadcast to the operator. I am pretty sure that where it is not illegal (if anywhere) it is in violation of the ToS for your carrier.

what they do is they overwrite the "stamp" on your SIM card and they tell your phone you're using a testing SIM card, and the phone is pogrammed to always accept all functionalities by testing SIM cards. except for the authentication tag of the SIM, all data form your SIM card is simply forwarded to the phone.

it doesn't broadcast any secret stuff.

Dev Team. Thanks for all your hard work. I've been following the blog pretty faithfully, hopefully you haven't already answered this question... there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer about the iPhone 3G's ability to work on T-Mobile's new 3G network in the states. I know T-Mo 3G is 1700mhz, and Apple's official specs say it is NOT compatible. I followed ifixit's teardown, did some research on the chips and they seemed to cover pretty much all the UMTS bands (though it seems that infineon's site has changed since then and became more vague... mysteriously)... and there's also this crazy idea that Apple had Infineon disable certain frequencies... etc, etc... Just wondering if you guys have the definitive answer... so that if and when an unlock happens, will it (can it) work?? Thanks again!

It's very possible that their paths will merge again, when the next version of 3G iPhone hardware comes out. If they use the newer n72ap (or its bootrom) in that device, then pwnage wouldn't be useable on it in its current form.

This also touches upon a larger question (with no clear answer...your answer usually depends on what you own): if an n72ap (iPod Touch 2G) jailbreak were available today, would it better off released now, or after next version of 3G iPhone hardware?

Just to clarify my earlier post about T-Mobile and 3G, it might've been confusing for any new folks. I was referring just to the '3G' portion of T-Mobile's network... if and when an unlock happens it WILL work at least at EDGE speeds... which is good enough for me, but hoping 3G can work too!

The infineon chip does cover all the frequencies covered under AT&T's 3g network as well as T-Mobiles 3g network. There was an interview I read at the beginning of this year with an ex-engineer who worked at infineon. What he said was interesting. To save costs on manufacturing, they program the chips to cover the entire spectrum, then disable whatever frequencies aren't needed. So prospectively, the 3g iPhone could work on T-Mobiles 3g network. That is what I deduced anyway, I should add I am in no way a programmer or coder or hacker. That's just how I interpreted the interview. I'll try and dig up the interview and provide a link.

First of all, I admire your devotion, DevTeam! Loads of work and no money in return - I can't see what drives you, but I DO appreciate that people like you exist. Other similar groups have previously enabled me to push gadgets such as my Pioneer DVD-player and my Xbox far beyond what I thought was possible. And now a most humble question:
Could you estimate the prospect of jailbreaking the iPod Touch 2G?

I know that iPhone 3G has higher priority and I respect that. I also realize that an estimation would (by nature) be inexact and most probably wrong. However, it would be interesting if you shared your intentions.

In another comment MuscleNerd stated that: "if an n72ap (iPod Touch 2G) jailbreak were available today, would it better off released now, or after next version of 3G iPhone hardware?" I do understand the benefits of waiting to release a jailbreak in that scenario, but to me the most intriguing thing about that statement is that it kind of "hints" that you are already working on a n72ap-jailbreak, hoping that this will give you a headstart when the next iPhone version is released. Any comment on that interpretation? :)

Well well... At the end of the day I'm just a guy trying to decide on whether to get a 1G or 2G iPod Touch. The hardware upgrades of the 2G are, if not significant, at least attractive. On the other hand, I would be really disappointed if I got a 2G and it was never jailbroken (hence missing out on loads of wonderful apps).

So, once again, to get straight to the point:
Do you think you will ever jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G?
Your thoughts on this would be really appreciated.

just a thought, but in my opinion, beeing able to jailbreak ipod touch 2g and choosing not to do so (in case it could be used for the next hardware version of iphone 3g or whatever) at the expanse of every owner out there is quite akin to what apple themselves are doing when they choose to release hardware with such restrictions. it's taking people as hostages for "marketing" considerations.

so i don't know if that's really what's going on, and if so maybe dev team hadn't seen things this way, or have other considerations. let's just hope they do jailbreak it soon!

I am not sure but , as per the video, the patch was made after
Stored Profile 1:
The iPhone was originally on Stored Profile 1: with the value S07:255, which was got down to S07:000 on Stored Profile 0: and then patched yet again, on Pwned Profile with the same value S07:000 with at&v as carrier thus cheating the phone and unlocking it..!!!

I am absolutely bad @ coding but that is what i assumed from the video.

But whatever you guys have done is a big achievement...Go Dev Team !!!

i dont get it, whats the big deal. I use an iphone 3G every day on T-Mobile UK and have no problems at all. I used a rebelsim if anyone cares. It works and cost me £10. oh yes and when the update comes along i can just do it without waiting for a hack.

I think that if the dev team posts a poll on Mac Rumors Forum, there is a chance arn would put it on the home page or iphone blog/page 2 rumors and then you could get a more acurate opinion of what should be prioritized.

as far as I know, the dev team keept away from hardware changes. after all, what they're trying to do is make a software unlock, so there shouldn't be any hardware modifications involved

From the name of the profile, I would guess you hacked it in the NVRAM of the modem. How you access the modem though? Further, by writing invalid data to memory as a new profile. Can you read anything else in memory other than these modem registers when in the unstable state?

Ok Im just as guilty as the next guy asking about the 2G Ipod Touch over and over again... We do it because we hope to "nudge" them into hurrying the jailbreak. Well folks, as you ALL painfully know its BACKSEATED.. which means it will probably be RESTARTED AFTER THE 3G Unlock. So if you like me and awaing a jailbreak for 2G, Relax....

When the 3G Unlock is done, we can expect progress... until then, THERE IS PROBABLY NO PROGRESS UNTIL THEN...

For installer you have to unpwn then repwn, remove the installer.app bundle in cydia.
For doing a custom boot splash install LogoMe (in cydia)

My guess about the patch is obvious: you changed ASCII string from "ACTIVE PROFILE" to "PWNED PROFILE".

Is a great progress because changing ASCII string on baseband firmware affects to checksum, and as can be seen, firmware is recognized and executed.

Hope you can find COND JUMP instruction and substitute with NOP, ASAP ;-)

You have to do a complete, original restore to 2.1 through iTunes. Put your phone into recovery mode or DFU mode and restore it, or shift restore, either one. Then re-pwn it. Good luck.

Did you read the post from MuscleNerd below? He says they do have a preference because the team has 3G iPhones not 2G Touch.

The important thing to take away from this? Everyone has a bias, it is natural. The Dev Team enjoys a challenge. They have worked on 3G iPhone for a while and they all have 3G iPhones, so they have a little bias in getting 3G iPhone done first.

Why do all the 2G touch people seem to think that Dev Team will just stop and switch gears? 2G touch is different hardware so it is not like they can just tweak the existing hacks and give you a jailbreak.

Or maybe they have it and they are just toying with everyone... as said before, if you don't like it, then hack it yourself. Everyone that owns a phone or ipod can hack it if they want to. Not knowing how is a good excuse to learn.
