iPhone-dev blog: Installer 4 and PwnageTool 2.0.2

  • Mr Wonderful · 1 year ago
Now this place is stinking coz of all the assholes...

If I were the dev-team I would just say...... fuck it...... we're releasing it in 1 week....... go and play with your dicks for a while.... and we'll get back to you.... you ungrateful sons of bachelors......

That's what I'd do if I was the dev-team....... or I'd release it straight away..... because I could..... because it would be my decision and not some assholes polluting my blog....

So there..... now there's no doubt that some people think I'm an asshole for saying these things..... but I don't care.... wait till next week you pathetic beggars..... don't you realise that the name of this software makes you all into begging turds?????

You're all being fucking PWNNNNNNED by the dev-team instead of Apple.... now do you get it you assholes... stop fucking complaining and let them get on with it.....
  • Matman · 1 year ago
    lol chillout -.-
  • Doc · 1 year ago
    Yes! You got it!
  • Ceejay · 1 year ago
Ha ha ha! hey Mr. Wonderful. i totally Agree with you man!

i mean. these Dev Team works real Hard for Us you know. and These idiots still
    Complaint with everything.

    Go for it Dev Team!
  • mickbuddha · 1 year ago
I wish they would release next week as well, and taught these fuckers with blog posts describing how great it is, and how they cant have it...
  • dudakk · 1 year ago
    Fuck yeah.
  • abrasBR · 1 year ago
    Couldnt agree more.

who needs installer 4??? we have cydia!
  • Stephen · 1 year ago
    Agreed.
  • some_guy · 1 year ago
Totally who wants that crap, yay for apt/dpkg
  • pawz · 1 year ago
Damned straight. The pol who think that installer is better just because it had more apps on 1.x are deluded. Apt/Cydia is a million times better.
  • pqdbr · 1 year ago
fuck you ... really, go fuck yourselvez.
  • Rob · 1 year ago
    Ditto.

Cydia does everything you need. Why do you need installer? IMHO installer should have never been updated to firmware 2.0.

    //Rob
  • Bob · 1 year ago
What's the beef? Everyone who knows anything will tell you that Installer was a hackjob and that Cydia is better in almost every way. Get over yourself
  • Steffwiz · 1 year ago
cydia has room for great potential and im working on making it amazing
    updates coming soon!
  • JD · 1 year ago
Yeah, I've been confused about this for a while now. Cydia duplicates all of Installer's functionality and does it better with a better backend.

Why should we still bother with Installer, a technically inferior solution, now that it will have hardly any software released for it?
  • Cody · 1 year ago
seriously, why can't we just unite under cydia and make it the best tool ever? i don't need an installer icon clogging up my already messy iphone screen. furthermore, im sure this retarded cydia/installer rivalry will perpetuate now and i will be forced to use both to get all of the apps i want. it would be so much simpler to keep all apps available from one application. why is nothing ever easy...
  • Rhhha · 1 year ago
    :(
    We can install Installer later.

Why not release now for inpatient ones ? :(
  • JD · 1 year ago
    Politics.

It could be simply added as a package for Cydia, but that would make Installer in some way "subservient" to Cydia, and they don't want that. RipDev will whine and bitch about how their technically inferior solution for applications isn't getting the respect it deserves.

It's incredibly stupid. ABANDON INSTALLER NOW. THERE IS NO REASON FOR IT TO EXIST.
  • Cody · 1 year ago
    thankyou!
  • Steffwiz · 1 year ago
    AGREED
  • Scott · 1 year ago
Who wants Installer? No one? That thing is outdated at this point and its failure to show up at release of OS 2.0 has shown people how much it fails. And given Cydia the head start it needed.

Ditch Installer and release Pwnage so we can get the nice fixes in 2.0.1, which largely out weigh any crap Installer 4 BETA will bring us.
  • RimA · 1 year ago
What a strange bunch of folks is running around out here?
Why do you ppl keep saying Installer would Mimic cydia?
Wasn't Installer the first "Iphone Installer program" on the market (ok...not on 2.0...anyhow)?
So I believe Cydia rather mimiced Installler...and furthermore I believe Installer to have a better user interface and usability than Cydia.
So far I can't remember any real advanteges of cydia, while Instastaller remains the "real deal" for me.
So Cydia has "no right to exist" if we are in any position to judge free software others create for us to make life easier and better.

Maybe everyone should decide for himself what to use...so it's just fair that the dev-team supports both programs leaving us the choice to either install the apps or to leave it.
  • demesne · 1 year ago
my 2 cents on your thoughts..
If Cydia is not installed on your iphone 2.0, Installer 4 will not have bsd subsystem and ssh ( 2 very basic piece of software you need ). So you will have to install it unless someone ports bsd subsystem :)

The amount of time Ripdev spent on developing a free software from ground up for 2.0 (Installer) they could have made Cydia(it is open source) more user friendly.
  • Steffwiz · 1 year ago
ripdev is all about the looks.....covering a pig with makeup doesnt make the pig any differnt

lol that was stupid, but w/e point taken

    CYDIA FTW
  • Britbloke · 1 year ago
Have you used Installer 4??? It's a fantastic piece of software. Way easier to use than Cydia.
  • JD · 1 year ago
How is it easier to use? It duplicates the EXACT SAME FUNCTIONALITY as Cydia but doesn't have dependency management. What is the point of this?
  • Scott · 1 year ago
Yep, I have. What makes it so great? So far, it more or less exactly mimics everything Cydia already has.

I'd be curious to know what you found in it that did not exist in Cydia.
  • weisen · 1 year ago
Regardless of anyone's opinion of Installer4, some people obviously want it, the dev team has chosen to support it, and the dev team has a choice of either having to release today without it and doing another release in the future with or simply waiting a day and saving themselves some work.

They chose to cut their work. Good for them. Maybe they'll spend the "extra" time on the 3G unlock or maybe they'll go have a celebratory beer. I hope it's the latter.
  • iphonedev · 1 year ago
weisen: thank you, finally someone who understands the post :)
  • just some guy · 1 year ago
Seconded. Thanks guys, your work is really appreciated.
  • MegaEduX · 1 year ago
    Tripled? :P

For example, I am HAPPY with this news. Having the best of three worlds (Cydia, Installer and AppStore) is the best than only the best of two worlds (Cydia and AppStore).
  • trout4u · 1 year ago
Hay trip; Do you or does anyone know if we will loose our apps from cydia already installed and our apps from the store if we install this new tool? and will we have to r-pwnage our phones again? or will it just show up in an update in cydia on our phones? Thanks for the time--anyone--Steven
  • Jewdass · 1 year ago
why not just download it later through cydia? ;)
  • Ziyan · 1 year ago
Having two package management systems on your iphone? wouldn't that be a bad idea? unless installer4 is also using apt as backend.
  • Britbloke · 1 year ago
I'm not complaining about Cydia. Cydia to me has a developers feel to it, not a users feel, which makes it a little clunky to get around. Installer is a much smoother UI and a better experience IMO.
  • demesne · 1 year ago
Just goto Manage>Settings and select Filter "User (Graphical Only)" and you will not see any developer apps..

Also everything that shines is not diamond !!! You need a solid package management system to get it working and cydia is based on debian-apt which is very vary stable!!!!
  • demesne · 1 year ago

  • Leans_To_Center · 1 year ago
How difficult is it to use either of them? I find it weird that you can even describe one as easier to use than the other! To me it's like saying, "Oh I much prefer THIS tea bag, it's SO much easier to use", it's like, WTF?!?!?
  • demesne · 1 year ago
I have used it but just let me know what will you do with installer and cydia both on your system???

You will still need cydia to install BSD Subsystem & winterboard & openssh, So why do you want another package management tool like Installer ??

I seriously think Ripdev should not have started work on Installer 4.0 from ground up and should have contributed to Cydia.
  • stormlifter · 1 year ago
Installer isn't really all that cool. Cydia is much cooler. I'd rather use a program that has been around before the iPhone and held its own for a very long time.

Anyways, I'd rather have it today and not have Installer :)
    Oh well...

    Thanks team! You're awesome.
  • frosse · 1 year ago
I know im here bustin ur balls everyday for 3G unlock but man do I know that you'll pull it off :)
  • Stephen · 1 year ago
I don't want to complain either. lol, but I do have one comment. Cydia is based on a tried and true method. A debian based package system will most likely never break. I am a little hesitant to use a brand new packaging system (at least compared to apt-get), and I am especially hesitant to use two installers. I don't want to see a war on how free software gets to my phone. I believe in open source, and personally I believe the whole iphone community should move to cydia, which is also relatively new, and will get much better with time. Plus, if you really need more sources, simply add them by ssh'ing into your iphone and adding an apt mirror.
  • silicontrench · 1 year ago
nag nag nag ..... whine whine whine

This is not the place for Installer vs. Cydia (going on Round 12 now....).
And by the looks of it, we have all just waived our privelage of having continual communication with Dev Team in between thier software releases. These guys are trying to please everyone as best they can, and this bitchin' and moaning happens every single time theres an update.

If you life is dependent on new iphone stuff, please, return your iphone I dont want you to have one
  • flo · 1 year ago
dito (wrote nearly same time as you ;)

adding new sources-feature will be in cydia soon. ;)
  • mogu · 1 year ago
Why not just add the sources directly in Cydia - they have a sources manager you know
  • me · 1 year ago
I agree. But to those who comments on Cydia's ui, just look at Ubuntu's Add/Remove Applications interface compared too Synaptic's interface. Even though i really enjoy using Cydia's interface, i have some minor issues with it that i can live with, but none the less the comparing i just did above shows that apt-get and Cydia has greater potential, and just look at how its growing, its evolving every week.
  • Rekoil · 1 year ago
Besides who says Cydia has to be the only apt-get frontend for the iPhone? If people think it's too complicated, lets write them a new frontend with a simpler user interface.
  • flo · 1 year ago
I think cydia is more powerfull, cause its apt-get based and apt is a very long time on earth. perfect dependencies-system and so on, i love it since i know debian years ago. the new installer looks nice... but thats just the gui - the rest we'll see....

on 1.1.4 we, specially I choosed cydia cause it has all the nice unix tools and not that crap bsd-subsystem bullshit.
the tools are tested and working fine. if i choose installer and not cydia (will cydia be included for future?) in pwnage 2.0.2 ca is safely change root-pw. with "passwd"? that was a problem on 1.1.4.
or will all the unix tools be available in installer, too? Or will i have to drive on two rails in future, too?

  • Brendan · 1 year ago
Booo, we can install Installer.app ourselves later, release PwnageTool now!!!! :P
  • AndrewGoldy · 1 year ago
I completely agree with you ... but then you are going to get 1000000 n00bs asking: "How do I install Installer.app after using PwnageTool???"

I have not used Installer.app for about 3 months now. Nearly everything is available via Cydia!
  • brandon · 1 year ago
everything like what? pls show me where i can find everything? i can barely get a theme to work even..
  • demesne · 1 year ago
moron themes will not be present in Installer!!!!!!!
You need summerboard to be ported to 2.0

Also winterboard is there in cydia.. Go try it out its way more advanced than Summerboard
    checkout http://sleepers.net/news/2008/08/05/winterboard...

And winterboard is being developed by saurik so count out the possibility of it being available in INSTALLER
  • pqdbr · 1 year ago
    fuck you both.

    @pqdbr: Thank you.
  • Jaime313 · 1 year ago
yes you can I have have it on my ipod touch ...
but it's worthless now and if it was cydia vs. installer...
    cydia wins hands down...

No problem, we 'll wait some more then...
  • rS · 1 year ago
c'mon - we don't want beta shit anyways on our (i)phones, so forget about the installer and include it, when it's REALLY ready! :-((
  • martin · 1 year ago
i can't either understand this decision, maybe it's worth it if this was the full release of the new installer, but a beta...? who wants that?
anyway, cydia is working very well and i can't see the need for another install-application, who wants three different ways to download an install apps on a mobilephone...?
  • AndrewGoldy · 1 year ago
    Ya... beta = No!

Let them TEST it first! Just like the devteam test their releases! Don't release a beta!!!
  • Rob · 1 year ago
But they want to include the beta version of installer 4. When I create a new firmware I will not include installer. Cydia works just fine for me.

  • bcons003 · 1 year ago
    good/ disappointing at same time
  • Jin · 1 year ago
I kind of figured Installer 4 had a play in this. But I agree with some others, we can install Installer 4 tomorrow, and I'm sure there will be next to nothing on it. Just like when Cydia for 2.0 launched.

Anywho, you guys are awesome as always! I wish I can donate some food or something since you won't accept money :(

  • Aaquib Nasir · 1 year ago
This messed me up permanently. I tried restoring a custom restore file made in PWNAGE tool on 3 different iPhones and got 1604 errors each time. 2 of my friends were pissed as f^ck and I had to get them to the Apple Store to get them replaced. My own iPhone 1G is bricked and not working now.

I wish I had never gotten into this.
  • Axelant · 1 year ago
    i agree with akedo1.
it seems iphone hacking is not your forte.
If you managed to brick 3 phones you must seriously misunderstand the language being used in the 10 hours of research you did.
Maybe it would have paid you some effort to do some of that research before the errors.
Oh and maybe you should have given up after the first try,
In general your local Apple Store is never going to have an actual a Mac Genius.
They make too much money elsewhere.
So no wonder they couldn't fix it.
    Words cannot describe your idiocy.
  • akedo1 · 1 year ago
If you do not know what you are doing.. and dont read and research at least a little bit before you hack into a $4-600 device.. and THEN do it again... and then AGAIN??!!! and i am sure also if you had done just a little MORE research you would have found how to fix them yourself... i can't even think of a word to call you.. so ... wow.
  • Aaquib Nasir · 1 year ago
You really think I didn't do research? I spent over 10 hours reading online on potential fixes and nothing. Then, I read somewhere that the communications board may have been messed up. I took my friend's iPhone 3G to an Apple Store today and they spent 2 hours trying to repair it. No luck. They ended up giving him a new one.

How about you do a little MORE research on what my problem instead of thinking of a work to call me.
  • akedo1 · 1 year ago
Dude.. you messed up THREE phones! that's OPERATOR ERROR! thats what we call an ID-10-T problem. plus, i have recovered iphones 1gen and 3g and ipod touches from what you call "bricked" many times for friends..(who also eventually admit they did not read or learn everything BEFORE starting) but NONE of them did it THREE times!! here.. a baseball analogy for you... Three Strikes..YOUR OUT! P.S Spellcheck is your friend!
  • Rekoil · 1 year ago
Besides, none of the current tools are even capable of bricking a 3G iPhone. This smells of BS to me.
  • akedo1 · 1 year ago
yeah.. first off.. i dont think the warranty covers "screwed up do to hacking" and those guys WILL know whats up... also thats what i was trying to point out.. he MUST have done something (if indeed it is true) to really mess them up... and really "the communications board"?? wtf ? game over man...game over.. ;-)
  • cartman13 · 1 year ago
Has anyone tried bricking a 3G by restoring a pwned jailbreak, unlocked, image for a 2G phone to a 3G phone? I have a feeling that's how some of these people end up bricking their phones... but pure speculation. no idea is there is something in itunes that would stop that.

... sorry, guys, but this time I'm not with you: we already have a *great installer* (and much more): CYDIA.

those who want the *old one* ;-) can get it from there, or manually or...just hold on waiting ;-p
  • Crahzee · 1 year ago
Sorry to sound like an ass but fuck installer cydia is way better judging by the beta.
  • Sylvain · 1 year ago
    HUGE THANKS !!!!
  • satan · 1 year ago
the 2.0.1 is a need for specific bugfixes. Installer not so much, if anyone wants the beta they can easily ssh it over to their phone once it's been updated with pwnage 2.0.2. Really there is nothing in Installer right now, I put it on my phone and almost immediately removed it since there was no point, no sources currently work with it and it's just taking up valuable real estate. Waiting for Installer doesn't make an improvement to the phone, getting the new firmware on there does.
  • qazwsxedc · 1 year ago

  • monkeyboy · 1 year ago
HI all i've been a bit of a numpty and restored my iphone after downloading the new 2.0.1 firmware update and it completely locked my iphone any ideas how i can downgrade back to 2.0 so i can unlock it again??.
  • iphonedev · 1 year ago
Monkeyboy: just hang on until tomorrow, kick back with a can of tetleys, watch some crap on Sky 1, and wake up tomorrow. It won't be long until we release, don't bother messing around with the 2.0 downgrade, we are almost there.
  • dan · 1 year ago
i was in the same boat. i gave up on the downgrade and just put it into recovery and let iTunes put the vanilla 2.0.1 back on. looking forward to tomorrows release so i can use netshare once again.

iphone devs: rock on -- ignore the pissers and moaners that want their p0wnage tool now.

whiney bitches: shut up and deal -- the devs work hard and unless you are working hard on this take what you can get; an awesome, well tested, free product that you can use by the grace of others that work hard and do what is best for everyone.
  • ruairi · 1 year ago
same happened to me, if you need your phone urgently, you can put it into dfu mode (not restore-with itunes logo) and then restore from your pwned 2.0 ipsw software. worked for me, i was stuck in the restore mode and was getting errror 6. have a look about dfu here http://limitededitioniphone.com/how-to-put-the-... or you can hang on till tomara till the new release
  • Ben8472 · 1 year ago
this is my first post on your blog comments. I too was hoping for an updated relase of the pwnage tool today, since we got cydia and apt seems to be really sophisticated, why bother waiting for a BETA release of an external source? Of course it is still all up to your distretion and we "end-users" are all happy that you share this wonderful tool with us, but in my opinion this is not a good move and you should just release pwnage 2.0.2 along with cydia..
  • iphonedev · 1 year ago

  • Endo · 1 year ago
    Rough translation @ yalag:

"I'm a retard and updated to 2.0.1 and now I can't install my jailbroken apps".

Dev team, love your work, keep it up and thanks for breaking us all of Apple's mold.
  • Dan · 1 year ago
Not every wants that installer beta trash on there phones.

Seriously, maby you should've asked how many people where interested in installer.app (beta version).

A poll would be in place.
  • Entaum · 1 year ago
Its not Beta, its the final version thats gonna be in... and i believe you will have the option between installer and cydia...
  • Slize · 1 year ago
If you go and reread the post you will see that it IS beta, just a public beta not the leaked one.

BTW I love your app and I can wait. If i was that fucking impatient I would have already upgraded to 2.0.1 and waited for the Jailbreak.
  • Max Fridge · 1 year ago
    Great news..

One question though with the new Pwnage...
As stupid as I am, I updated my iPhone (1st gen) to the 2.0.1 version, and as it didn't block my phone, I decided to Restore it as i was experiencing massive dialer crashes and then it started to deny my SIM card. Tried to downgrade number of times but unsuccessfully... Will this new release unlock my phone again, or will I be forced to back to my old expensive carrier?
I don't wanna pay 14 bucks per Mb for EDGE.. haha...

    Keep up the good work!
  • monkeyboy · 1 year ago
dude i've done the same thing as you!! i was trying to see if it was possible to downgrade back to 2.0 but i guess you've answered my question........so that's a no then i guess i gotta hope the new pnage tool unlocks it again.
    fingers crossed
  • ruairi · 1 year ago
hey! i might be supersmart, but i put mine into dfu mode (after trying a hundred times on restore mode) and restoredit to my original state!, so try dfu mode
  • Max Fridge · 1 year ago
Well, I've tried DFU mode... didn't even work with a downgraded iTunes...
Seams that my phone for some reason denise the .ipsw or something... Doesn't matter if its my own custom .ipsw or the original one from apple... Im crossing my fingers that the new release of the Pwnage will solve the problem for me...

PS. The funny thing is that when i bought the thing 8 months ago it was unlocked... bought it from orange and started using it on swisscom directly... Somehow it got re-locked to orange again... don't ask me how it happened... Im just very confused right now :S
    haha
  • ruairi · 1 year ago
are you sure, it wasnt in retore mode, as restore mode is the "connect to itunes thingy", with a itunes icon, while dfu mode is a blank screen, and only your computer will tell you if your in dfu mode. i had the problem of error 6 etc and found out i was in restore mode. when i put it into dfu mode, my problems went away and it restored first go.

Usually I just read these blogs just to see what people are saying and I don't care to comment or express my opinion but now its just getting outright ridiculous with the number of asshole's demanding they want it now, release now, and other complaints when they aren't doing any of the work and basically getting great work handed to them free on a silver platter. Stop being so damn asshole-ish and do the damn shit yourself if you NEED it that bad. Im very impatient and want the damn tool myself but if they are saying they are gonna release it another day then I gotta wait another day. its not gonna kill me and im gettin the thing for free. Thanks dev team. thanks asshole's. PEACE!

  • contempt · 1 year ago
Amen! I'm upset about it not coming out as well as I was looking forward to the snappy OS tonight. And I probably won't be installing Installer since I'm happy with Cydia. But another day won't kill me. Thanks dev team for making my iPhone so much better. Also, you know everyone here supports you, we're all just frustrated and some of us show it differently. Keep up the great work.
  • SteverB · 1 year ago
Thanks SlimG; I was just working myself up to actually posting for the first time something like this, but you've done the writing for me! What are all these 12 year olds doing with iPhones anyway? Love "asshole-ish", too!
  • Yehud · 1 year ago
Amen....totally agrees 100%. They should deeply look back at what they are moaning about, and IMO, they are truly ungrateful, regardless of whatever protective words that they've put to defend themselves. I too have waited a long hours without sleep for the update, and its 6.00 am here, but I still can accept the decision made by the Dev Team, without grumbling. Its like a rhetoric story of an ungrateful beggar that scolded back to those they are begging from if that person delayed a little bit in handing out a penny to them.

To Dev Team, do what you think is best, and don't give a damn to those ungrateful scums.

OMG, I almost forgot how entertaining those comments here are :) :) People still bitching and complaining that they don't get the itsy bitsy tiny update to 2.0.1 and sound almost like their life would be dependent on that. Or that 2.0 would be SOOOO SLOOOOOOW that the device would be unusable. Can't understand how they haven't killed themselves because of those circumstances.

People really are heavily resisting to grasp the concept that this is not a democracy or a company where you can demand stuff. Go team, do your thing, I'll wait for my RSS reader to deliver the good news.

What if we don't want installer? Cydia looks good to me and being Debian based, I'll probably trust it more. I don't want two conflicting package managers. Can we remove installer after pwnage upgrade is run? Or can you make it an option in the pwnage tool?

    Thanks guys!
  • Nick R · 1 year ago
    Awesome work guys.
So I didn't know what i was doing and updated my jailbroken iPhone to the legit 2.0.1 version of firmware. Let's just say my phone is out of order until your next release is made. (judging by what you guys said in a previous blog post)
    Can't wait. :P
  • broken1 · 1 year ago
Dev Team. Your work is amazing. Ignore these guys who complain about late release dates, what you guys are doing for the iPhone world in your spare time is brilliant. I just have one question, is there going be a 3G unlock coming at any stage? I notice some of your blogs mention >if< and when. At the moment I am sitting with a jailbroken, locked iPhone 3G which was VERY expensive. I just wanna know if it will be unlocked someday. You can drop me an email :-) Thanks again and cheers from sunny South Africa!
  • spiffyguy · 1 year ago
Do you think there will be a way when you install to tap into Springboard the same way Apple's App Store does? Meaning instead of having to reset the springboard to see all the jailbroken apps you've installed, have it create a visual "Loading" app like Apple does OR just tell the springboard to recognize the new app by the time we leave installer or cydia without the little reset?

It's not a huge hassle but definitely was one of the first things I noticed that Apple polished with their app store. It was one of the first of many, "Whoa cool!" 's out of my mouth :)

Thanks for all your hard work!

    - Matt

EDIT: I just realized I posted this on the DEV TEAM blog, when it should have been a question for Cydia or Installer guys... Either way, sharing my thoughts!

  • sURGE · 1 year ago
UNLESS INSTALLER 4.0 WILL COME WITH MORE APPS THEN CYDIA I SEE NO POINT IN WAITING FOR IT TO BE ADDED, IT CAN JUST BE ADDED TO CYDIA OR AS AN SSH APP.
WHY WAIT FOR SOMETHING THAT WILL HAVE THE SAME CONTENT AS CYDIA.....

    WHAT DO U THINK?
  • JD · 1 year ago
It won't. It will have less content than Cydia and a technically inferior backend.

The reason they are waiting for Installer 4 is politics; I can't see any other reason. Unless one of the devs wants to enlighten us.

    Hahahaha,
"Apple's 2.0.1 firmware update accomplishes what hackers had claimed Apple couldn't do: It relocks an iPhone to AT&T. The original boast was predicated on the fact that through all of its prior updates, Apple had never updated the baseband (cellular radio) firmware. Well, 2.0.1 breaks this tradition, and it breaks unlocking."

Noobs, Apple have updated the baseband with every new firmware...

Wow! 30 minutes and some people out there have already sent iphonedev from: "We don’t want to keep you guys refreshing and commenting to ask where the latest update is, so we thought we’d just tell you now." to "Read the fucking blog post.".

Guys, be thankful and patient! I for one, appreciate what these people have done (and are doing); not to mention the fact that now we have an ongoing blog (with actual reponse-responses). Not sure if you've noticed but, there's no ads or donate buttons around.

Good luck! Cheers. Keep it coming.

Thanks for all of your efforts guys.

pwnage is a terrific tool for those of us that need jailbroken and unlocked iphones and your efforts a greatly appreciated.

I have no comment on your decision to wait a little longer - your work your decision! I am eagerly waiting, but I can be patient for a while longer yet.

What I do suggest is that if it is practical you allow users to choose to install cydia, installer or both. It does seem from the comments there are a few stronger opinions about which one to use and why.

    Again, thanks for your efforts.
  • Romz · 1 year ago

Wow, that guy Danimator b!tch slapped... i wonder if it looked like that your tube slow motion boxing video.... LOL

I must admit I was disappointed by the delay very much in a blue balls sort of way.

I am curious of what installer will bring to the table vs. cydia. Is it just the new slick interface (it does like pretty darn cool)? in the end though, there is still only a handful of ported apps, no? It sounds like people think that when installer comes up a ton of software will magically appear. (if it does sweet! but from what i've read we still got to wait for people to port apps...)

Anyway, have to go take a cold shower now. So I can get all excited again tomorrow!

    TIA iphone dev team!

Iphonedev: you really have a lot of patient listening to all this crap, you don't need to explain yourself but you still respect them with your response. You're doing a great PR work for free, I wouldn't be able to hold myself from banning each and every one of them.

Thank you for sharing with us your reasons, and I can't thank you enough for your work.

I really do hope you are having fun doing it.
  • gobble · 1 year ago
people who argue Cydia vs Installer are retarded. Cydia is great, and I'm sure Installer 4 will be, too. But more importantly, having this sort of choice for Jailbroken users is great -- the "competition" between Cydia & Installer simply means better stuff for us -- the end user.

So quit ya fvcking bickering about Cydia/Installer -- and appreciate what both developers have done, and will hopefully continue to do for a long time to come.

A change of discussion... something I really would like an answer to.. I love PwnageTool, its great and works well.. I have updated apps, themes and all sorts of 3G iPhone goodness because of it and the great guys of the iphone-dev team..
Now.. that over, after spending hours installing apps, getting my winterboard themes working properly, installing all the ROMs for the NES emulator, what I want to know is, when pwnage 2.0.2 comes out for the 2.0.1 firmware, will we have to restore the iphone again to install it?... if thats the case, Will loose everything and have to start over?.. is there a way to back everything up, like a clone or something, so I can put everything back easily?... or will Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 modify the "update" 2.0.1 firmware and allow an in-place upgrade leaving all the apps and settings alone?

    hmmm... would like to know..

IMO there's value in both Installer and Cydia... and apps from Installer do not always make their way to Cydia. One hopes that the app creators will update for v2 as well. In the meantime, I am happy to wait for a complete product. ok, First of all,... LOVE PWNAGE!! so new installer.. Yay... The only concern I have is that I hope that the new pwnage tool addresses the wifi issue with the 1st gen iphones. I have an 8GB that has no wifi, and if you google it, it's all over the interwebs. I'm not the only one. I haven't seen any mention of this on the forums here, but many people are experiencing no wifi with the old iphones. iPhone+no data plan+no wifi=ZUNE! Yikes! lol. But keep up the EXCELLENT work! Look forward to the updates!

I think it's worth waiting an extra half day. That being said, here's a REQUEST I'd love to see incorporated into PwnageTool. I love the fact that if I restore my iPhone, it simply reinstalls all the apps purchased from the AppStore. Is it possible to have a similar backup with PwnageTool. For example, could it read those files and include them in the custom installer file????

DevTeam, thanks for all your hard work and easy to use software. I've been holding off on upgrading to 2.0 just waiting for Apple's updates, followed by yours. Serious! some people have no clue how lucky they are and take for granted the tools that the DevTeam work so hard at bringing to them(us) at NO FREAKIN COST! I think the Dev Team should go down the list of comments, pull out the people that have complimented them, or shown patience and support, and only offer it to them as a "private beta". That'll teach the haters and the bitchers!
  • WICKED KITTEN · 1 year ago
now all you are going to see is a bunch of suck ups " supporting" the team...all hoping to get a private beta...jeeeeez...

UNGrateful idiots thats what i say.
Just be happy you have a dev team that works hard to make your device do more things that you morons couldnt come up with yourself!

Also, who gives a crap about installer, cydia is a million times better anyway.

I have tried installer beta and I use Cydia. I think you guys should forget about installer. Cydia is a MUCH BETTER, FASTER, standards-based, OPEN SOURCE program. I'm sure our Russian programmer friends are honest, but their software is not open source. That concerns me a lot. Anybody else concerned?

Does anyone know much about this? Do we have to loose everything we have already installed from Cydia and the app store> Do we have to re-pwnage our 2.0 iphones? Any help please --thanks-----
  • moo · 1 year ago
So we're waiting for a program that's been out and beta tested by users on the 2.0 firmware. It's been out for a while (leaked) and people have messed with it. What other tests do you need with one program? It doesn't really affect the firmware that you're releasing at all. If you were releasing the final version of Installer, that would be understandable that you're waiting for RipDev to finish it but you're probably releasing the beta's that's been out.

Waiting til tomorrow is fine but giving the reason why you're postponing it is with Installer doesn't make any sense.
  • sam · 1 year ago
How the fuck do you know that it doesn't affect anything they do?

Well its quite obvious that the Dev Team is sick of everyone bull shit. ROCK ON GUYS! They sat there quietly while you went back and forth ranting about them and how shitty they are. Yeah true in the customer service world they would blow. But hey as I see it they have no customers They are no selling a thing and if they came on tomorrow and said "You all are a bunch of whinny fucking babies that should die in your sleep" They would still have everyone flooding their servers the second that the software gets released. This is no market they are a monopoly of a free software. Rock on guys stop taking shit. Keep up the good work. A Huge pat on the back.

u got me all freaking excited. im sick of 2.0.1. but i was sick of text and contact lag (still am actually nice bug fixes) now i have to wait even longer!!!!!!!
  • technome · 1 year ago
Back in the day, I was happy to have installer. But now? No way! Installer did its job back then but its closed nature and reliance on a buggy 'nix underpinning meant its days were always going to be numbered. I understand you guys are trying to avoid a groundswell of opinion demanding "Where's Installer?" but, as far as I'm concerned, the only currently available package manager that will be installed on my phone will be Cydia. Any dev who puts their app on installer rather than Cydia shows such a fundamental lack of understanding that I can't trust their judgement in any other matter relating to computing. Their software is certainly not being allowed on any device that I'm running! I trust that the expert mode will allow us to exclude Installer from the custom firmware installation.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate the work dev team is doing, thank you so much for your work this past year.

I am just wondering if there is a possibility that the 3g might never be unlocked. I currently have a new 3g but i'm moving to europe in a month. If there is a chance i won't be able to use it there any time in the foreseeable future, then i will return it.

    Thank you in advance.

Yes, I'm anxious to have it. I also fully understand building the package YOU want to release. Excellence takes time.

    Thanks again!

Dont know if this was already proposed, its just an idea I have. Why doesnt the dev team have a spot on this site where a user can enter their e-mail address....with those addresses you can do a mass email when any new releases happen as soon as they happen. Maybe it could deter the amount of comments "like when is it coming out," because they will know when they receive the email from the dev team. Just a thought...thanks again for all the hard work guys and I hope you are able to find this comment!
  • Ness · 1 year ago
That's a decent idea, but shouldn't the RSS feed be enough already? You can even check it on your iPhone.

  • Gary · 1 year ago
Thanks Dev Team, this release cant come at a better time, get back off holiday on saturday morning and finally get rid of all the buggyness of 2.0. Your an amazing group of people, doing this for the community.

I understand why you are waiting for Installer, not everyone wants or likes cydia so giving everyone the choice of both is a good move. Personally i dont use either, as the only application i use is SSH for tethering (the -D parameter of the ssh application on OSX creates a socks proxy)...

Thanks again for a great product.

    Gary
  • sam · 1 year ago
iphonedev, just a non-hassling question. You guys were able to downgrade the modem firmware on the 3G to a beta firmware (info from "something old something new" post), so does that mean you can downgrade the modem firmware for the people who messed up and accidentally updated to 2.0.1 through itunes? I'm guessing that downgrading possibility is relative to what version you downgrade from, not a whole system exploit, but I thought (hope) it wouldn't hurt to ask.

    Thanks bra.

So does this mean that installer 4.0 will not be available through Cydia? Is it true that in order to get firmware 2.01 I will have to re-pwn my phone again? Will there be an update to 2.01 through Installer or Cydia?
  • Hactar · 1 year ago
Its your program and so its your decision but personally I dont agree with it:

    1) Many of us users are desperately waiting for the new pwnage so we can have a fix for the two most annoying bugs: the contact bug and the laggy keyboard bug. Installer, while a nice application, isn't this important at this moment in time. Its not even open source, while cydia is.
    2) Its not like installer 4 is ready to go. You are slowing down the release on the presumption that they will actually release it. What if they dont? What if they say they arnt ready yet and will release it on sunday? You should be dictating the release cycle and not them.
    3) Wouldnt it be possible to install installer via cydia later once they release it?

But again, its your app and i'm very thankful for your work, so please take this as constructive criticism for the future, and nothing else.

  • Ness · 1 year ago
Thanks for the update, guys. I'm happy to wait an extra day for Installer.app. I wish all the people complaining would just lighten up. It's one day. You can live.

Basically, I just wanted to say that you guys rock, and that your work is really appreciated.
  • Massimo23 · 1 year ago
I don't understand the moaning of some iphone users, the Dev Team are offering there Help without asking a Penny, giving you the only tools around to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone, testing the pwnagetool to eliminate bugs or problems thus giving the user an easy tool to use so that he doesn't have to "smash his head against the iphone" plus you will be able to enjoy three app installers, leaving the user the choice to decide which one he/she prefers.
What is all the moaning about, i mean a day longer for the pwntool 2.0.2 to come out like it's not a MONTH or a Week. C'mon give the Devteam a break, they are doing their best to give you the best.
Plus just like all of us they have there own life, jobs, maybe family.
    Thanks Dev Team, Good work.

I would like to direct the following to the entire iPhone Dev Team -

After reading a majority of the comments posted today along with previous ones, I have become disgusted with the people here that demand ANYTHING of you. The fact is that you guys have come together to release a product to the iPhone community that is worlds ahead of anything that was expected. You did this solely to help other people. The idea that there are still people commenting in this blog, demanding for more from a team that probably devotes over 80% of their FREE TIME away from work to build such an amazing piece of software, will continue to baffle me. I believe that every time you release a new version of the PwnageTool it is a privilege for me to be able to download it (not a right). I don't think I can fully express how upset I currently am at this online community and how thankful I am that you continue to release new versions of your software and put up with the crap that people say. I know there are others that feel the same as me, as can be seen by some comments from earlier today.

A big thank you for your continuing efforts!!!

I'm a first time Iphone/Mac user after years and years of using Windows. I bought the new 3G version and have been waiting ever since to start using when you guys develope the sim card unlocking system (or whatever you want to call it)

Just want to tell you that I'm following your blog every single day to read about your developement on the area and I get really worried when you write "when/IF we can unlock" - how far away are you from an unlock, would be nice to hear about your progress on the matter.

Ever so thankfull but waiting anxciously =0)

  • vanc · 1 year ago
This sounds a very promise release. Well done Dev Team, you've done it again.
Just want to clarify an small thing in your statement
quoted: "do not update your 3G device with iTunes unless you do it via PwnageTool 2.0.2 (this means you’ll need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool 2.0.2 and install it using iTunes) "

What does it really mean? I think it need a bit of explanation since everyone is knowing about FW 2.0.1 and you didn't say to create a custom .ipsw with FW 2.0.1 or FW 2.0. Since the Pwnage 2.0 work with FW 2.0, then I suppose this Pwnage 2.0.2 will work with FW 2.0.1 right???

BTW, what different between Post (unverified) and check the box Verify my post? Thanks
  • jeffsonstein · 1 year ago
thanks for all the work. you do a great public service.
  • devnull_1337 · 1 year ago
it's unfortunate but can't be helped. people will make comparisons between installer4 and cydia. i don't know how much installer4 has changed from the old version (i had since switched to cydia even before firmware 2.0) but i can still remember the dependency issues it had. specially when it comes to bsd subsystem upgrade. saurik saw the problem and like any trusty hacker did something about it. not only did he do something about it, he made the right choice (as far as i'm concerned). he based cydia on apt. he didn't reinvent the wheel.

i had my first introduction with apt while using ubuntu (dapper at the time). it was not that long ago but long enough to notice that apt never once broke a dependency. i could say the same with cydia so far.

in most cases, two or more is better than one. not in the case of a platform package manager. there can only be one, there must only be one (not counting appstore of course). the community only need one. i think it's better for repository maintainers, developers and users.

and i hope that cydia will be the one.
  • oz_paulb · 1 year ago
I personally don't have a problem with Cydia (works great for me!), but can understand some end-users being more comfortable with Installer.

I *do* want to stress/add to something you said: there should be only ONE package manager on the device. I'm only talking about what is put onto a particular device - both Cydia and Installer can exist as choices, but only ONE should be managing packages on the device, IMO.

Here's a somewhat complicated example (probably doesn't belong on this forum, but I'll go ahead and write it as I'm thinking about it):

If you have both Cydia and Installer on the phone, and they are both managing 'packages' (but differently), I can see there being problems (regardless of how good the new Installer's dependency checking is).

For example, lets say you install something with Installer, that requires "BSD subsystem". Installer's dependency checking installs that (including some global binaries into "/usr/bin").

Then, you go to Cydia and install something that also requires "BSD subsystem". Cydia installs that on top of what was done by Installer. This may or may not be a compatible version of "BSD subsystem" - let's assume the binaries are identical for now.

The user then goes back to Installer and uninstalls the app that had the "BSD subsystem" requirement. Installer's dependency checking sees that no other Installer-based packages require "BSD subsystem" (and Installer doesn't know about Cydia package management), so it removes it (plus binaries in "/usr/bin", etc). Now, go back to the app that you installed with Cydia - it won't find the "BSD subsystem" binaries that it needs.

I haven't used the new Installer - maybe it's also based on "apt"??? If so, then maybe both of the package managers (Cydia + Installer) could co-exist on the device. But, if they don't work together on package management, there could really be a mess if you use both.

EDIT: The above is more theoretical - I haven't looked into how the package managers actually work - maybe there are safeguards against the above scenario (it just seems like a likely outcome of having two separate managers installed).

Again: I have no problem with people wanting/using Installer instead of Cydia - I just see there being problems with using both on the device.

The other issue mentioned above is having multiple sets of repositories and the mess that could be - I'm not as worried about that (although I could see some apps only being released for one repository format, which could then force users to use both Installer + Cydia).

    - Paulb

Awesome news. Thanks so much dev-team!

I have a question: Can I have Cydia and Installer both installed or will I have to pick only one to install?
  • blunden · 1 year ago
First of all, good work. Your pwnage method is pretty amazing and reading about the way you did it was something I found very interesting. Actually, your method is the only one that has ever worked perfectly on my ipod. The others back in 1.1.4 days slowed it down or crashed it for some reason. 2.0 runs great as well.

However I was wondering about the current update. As far as I understand 2.0.1 has an update path in, unlike the 2.0. Does this mean that those of us running a pwned 2.0 firmware could build a new custom 2.0.1 IPSW and then use the "update"-feature of iTunes with that file or is there something that needs DFU-mode again?

Guy's I personally prefer running each together. The Cydia Unix tools are great, but I am no developer, so Installer is my preference. We have lived for a month with 2.0, I think one more day is not a big deal. I would be willing to wait a much longer period of time for the quality of work the Dev-Team releases.

too all the people bitching and moaning about the delay: get a fucking life and wait another day its not a big deal when you look at the grander scheme of things. yeah installer 4 might not be everyone's cup of tea but i can remember how many people were whining when it was announced pwnage tool 2 would only support cydia. now it seems to be just the opposite. and if you can't wait theres already a 2.0.1 jailbroken ipsw floating around the web or you could quit being a noobie bitch and learn how to xpwn the firmware yourself.

I stand with the folks who applaud the efforts of the dev team. The team is doing great things for us and expanding the capabilities of our devices. This is much appreciated and the work is first rate. Of course, I was a bit disappointed not to see the new release today - but it really isn't the end of the world. I will be surprised if the Installer 4 beta in 2.0.2 doesn't have some cools apps available right away. If there are apps, then this would make it worth the wait and worth including Installer 4, no? All of this stuff is really "use at your own risk" - so the fact that something is labeled "beta" doesn't really turn me off. So, thanks again Dev Team and I'll be checking back tomorrow.

Great work Dev Team. You guys are doing an awsome job. Agreed 100% with all your decisions.

Really, dont botter with those stupid morons. I cant understand those who complain an moan. They really dont know how dumb they are. You guys are awsome, and have created the best cracking tool Ive ever seen in my whole life. Its simple, pretty, and have everything we want and more. And another thing ITS FREE.

I personally, prefer Installer then Cydia, and was crazy for this release. But others prefer Cydia then installer, and its their opinion. So delaying ONE freaking day, so we can get a way better tool, which can deliver the best from both worlds, is the best decision you guys have made.

Doesnt make any sense, releasing a tool today, then releasing another tool with installer support in the next day.
We all have to thank you guys a lot, cause if it wasnt for you, then we woudnt have this awsome tool we have to jailbreak our phone.

I cant understand those who complain, cause, when you guys are testing the tool, just to make sure we can get the best software possible, and safe, so we dont brick our phone, people go and complain.
When you guys delay the tool for just ONE freaking day, to get it way bether, and with installer support, people go and complain.
Go figure. You guys should get those retarded IPs, and release them a different tool. Like an iPhone Bricker, then maybe they would learn.

Anyway, thanks a lot from Brazil, and keep it that way.

...... ok installer is better...... its easier to use..... you can add packeges... you can install better packeges. ok? cydia sucks...(sarcastic) oohh wow! 2 whole running but stull crashy apps great! im so glad cydia rushed to be boarded onto 2.0! please...installer is better and unlike cydia they took their time to prep their apps!!!! so cydia sucks!!!! and thats that get over it!!!!
  • frumpsnake · 1 year ago
Great, I have to put up with a buggy as fuck 2.0 iPhone when the PwnageTool is already complete, just so it can be packaged with a useless Installer which duplicates what we already have without a robust package management system behind it, all because stupid people bitch and whine about Cydia's lack of apps when Installer is going to have the exact same problem on 2.0.

Nevermind that Cydia could be used to install Installer...

  • Applesauce · 1 year ago
Take as long as you guys need to do it right, I'm just appreciative that you guys work so hard to bring us all this awesomeness for free :)

My 2pp on Cydia/Installer: I really don't care if a developer uses Wise or InstallShield to deploy their software, they are means to an end. The same can be said of Cydia and Installer. Much of the whining is the lack of an elementary understanding of the significance these softwares play in the overall development process, which in this case is being dramatically exaggerated. You peeps are going to get your Winterboardz and your Monkeyballz either way, how you get them is a moot point. Especially since we don't pay anything for this stuff.
  • frumpsnake · 1 year ago
I don't think anyone would be complaining if PwnageTool was delayed because of work on PwnageTool. But the fact of the matter is it's delayed because of the useless Installer 4.

    Hi,
First I want to thank all of you who do this magnificent work. Really, magnificent.
I wish to jump on the opportunity "giving you guys all the features you want" to ask in form of a wish list if it would be possible to circumvent the POP email setup to include only headers or first x Kb to download, then select the mails we want the body to download too? (or do you know a good pop email prog?)
Not sure this is the right place to ask this but... Apple says this is a wanted bug. You know why ;-)
    Thanks,

My god. So many ungrateful people in one place!

The Dev Team provide a FREE service to all iPhone users and yet people are ungrateful that the release is postponed one friggin day? You do realize that they could just stop releasing their software to the public and just use it in their own closed group?

And the whole idea about releasing a beta software is that you want a group of people testing the software for bugs. In this case that group is the users of pwnage tool. If you don't like the Installer then just don't use it.

Stop your whining! Instead you should cheer them on and be supportive of the excellent work this group is doing.

I'm hoping for an unlock as I own a 3G iPhone locked to AT&T while I'm located in Sweden but I do not demand that the dev team should release one.

To the dev team: Excellent work and I admire your skills. Looking forward to more quality releases :)

i just noticed in iTunes for your iPhone version it goes from 2.0 to 2.0.1

Should make this next release of PwnageTool version 2.0.1.1, to allow future versions of PwnageTool to match that of the iPhone (ie; PwnageTool 2.0.2.0 = iPhone 2.0.2) etc..
  • kostas89 · 1 year ago

  • Arkonnen · 1 year ago
A month has passed since the 3G thing lauched. We still don't have a stable 3G and we still don't have jailbreaking stable and we still don't have unlock (and may never will). We need to be realistic guys, it will be a long time before we have something going and then Apple will launch a new phone and we'll be all back here crying for jailbreaking'unlocking magic. Aside from being a challenge to the dev team, I see no other big purpose in all this. This isn't something we can rely on. Most you guys are just fucking crazy about a bug riddled phone, like there's no tomorrow. Fuck, I take all this as a hobby. My main phone is still a Nokia, thank you.

(Question at bottom someone want to give a clear answer that i will understand at 5 AM ?)
Wellll.... I started to read the comments and then i realized if i ever want to get to bed and not read people complainng and yelling, that i should stop.

Some how i missed the 2.0.1 firmware update untill today, (that it was out). I think i shall update tomorrow and see how the apple did with it.

I am however worried about the 3G baseband, you say they update it with this update ?? and you might not be able to unlock if we update without the tool ??? thats scares the hell out of me, but i have ATT so im ok for the next 2 years at least, i doubt ill be changing but man, who knows what could happen, i could move out side the country and then be screwed over with still paying att and not having a phone.

BUT... I believe strongly that if the Dev team finds a way to hack this baseband it will be increasingly easier for them to hack the "updated" version.

QUESTION!!!! So if we update the 3g phones with the new tool, to firmware 2.0.1 we dont have to worry about the baseband ?

I am happy with iPhone 2.0 and PWN-ed firmware with Installer. It's great for me and think same for everyone . . .

What about to have posiibility to have 2.0.1 Jailbreak and Unlock (baseband) solution ??? I do not care about Installer.app 4... Cydia is the best tool I've ever used and this tool is technicaly right solution. It's very simple to run repository and maintain whatever you want ! ! ! I do not Think Installer is more important than 2.0.1 or 3G Baseband Unlock.

dear dev-team members please give us 2.0.1 baseband unlock and jailbreak. Installers and other cool stuff can be added later

Without your work I've be never have used my iphone in my country . . . Because Apple don't care about people, they want moooooooore money ! ! ! God DAMN Corporations ! ! !

Although I don't really care about the Installer anymore (the new GUI looks kinda nice, but otherwise Cydia is a lot more advanced), I can of course understand that you don't want to make two releases in two days, cause that would be pretty pointless.
Looking forward to it, but take your time :-)
  • demesne · 1 year ago
    Kind of my thoughts too..
Agreed Installer is very nice looking but it will not even have ssh/bsd subsystem installed unless cydia is installed or someone else ports them. Really ripdev guys you could have spent your time on improving cydia(its open source) rather than making installer from ground up for 2.0....

Anyways dev-team take your time, chill out, have beer and keep on making pwnage !!!!
    Looking forward to the release...
  • iDarbert · 1 year ago
Actually that's the reason I've always used Installer over Cydia, I don't really need the unix core tools and SSH and while I understand a lot of people is interested in having them I think it's still nice to have the option NOT to install anything like that :)
  • demesne · 1 year ago

I mean i ave Cydia and as soon as installer come out im going to add it to my phone both seem to be good so im going to use them both : )

I have a question here. It suggests to stay away from updating to 2.0.1 if concerned about future unlockability. Would this be the same for never-locked (lock-free) iphone sold in several countries such as Hong Kong? Or it wont get this effect if the iphones are already unlocked by factory default. Any input would be much appreciated!! Thx.

I also don't get a) why everyone is being so impatient about this and b) what the whole thing about 'installer' is about. Installer is the means, not the end. I'd be much more interested to know which apps, if any, will be available on it that won't be on Cydia or appstore.

You wouldn't get excited about a new version of InstallShield for Windows would you?!

The real reason people should be waiting for the next version is just so that we can benefit from the new official Apple firmware and still use our cydia/cracked apps.

Installer 4 adds way more features than Cydia. O_o

Installer = Cydia + Background/Multiple Downloads with the ability to pause and a repository format that is 10 times faster than the old one. And a much friendlier GUI.

How can you like Cydia better.

    Are you people fucking retarded?

Every single developer/repository older will go with Installer 4. Why?

Bandwidth. The new repo format uses much less bandwidth which is good for us and them.

As a new owner of an iphone eagerly anticipating a jailbreak for the new update, I have spent much of my time over the last day reading about what the dev team has done and their role in the community.

I must say not only am I impressed with their diligence and respect for the community, but extremely blown away by the quality of their work. Good on you guys, keep it up, and I look forward to this release as well as future ones.

W8 guys, to clear this, when Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 comes out, to update to 2.0.1 firmware i will have to make a new custom firmware using Pwnage and will lose all my existing data (cracked apps, etc.) or will i have an option to update the existing firmware directly through Pwnage Tool (transfer of data between iPhone and Pwnage tool)...??

I always read the posts in here, and this time i want to share my thoughts.
We, the iphone users, should be very gratefully with the Dev Team.
Please think before posting such a comments!
DevTeam do not have any responsibility to release any new pwnage Tool version, they just do it for fun and free!
DevTeam please, don't pay attention to crap comments!
    Keep the good work on!
  • Vuko · 1 year ago
block the ungrateful idiots ! they not even deserve pwnage...

take your time dev ! we will wait :)
  • Edge · 1 year ago
After reading through these posts, and discounting the idiots and grumblers, it seems like there is a well thought out consensus:

-The majority really appreciate the development team and are thankful for what they have done - they respect their decision, but disagree with it (most seem happy to wait, but wish the didn't have to).
-The majority would have preferred to see the 2.0.2 release rather than wait for Installer 4 (and a beta version at that).
-The majority would like all unofficial apps to be distributed through one installer, and the winner seems to be Cydia (having two installers on 1.1.4 was a pain).
  • Lenuam · 1 year ago
Well, I sort of agree. Waiting for a beta release might not have been the best idea. Anyway, it's their decision, and I can understand that it's more comfortable to make one release instead of two in a relatively short time.
I just hope the release isn't delayed because ripdev doesn't give out the public beta at the promised time (cause I don't really care about Installer)
  • Rumik · 1 year ago
I've just been given a 2G iphone with 2.0.1 and I need to unlock it for my SIM card, so I'm thanking the dev team in advance :) THANK YOU!

I'll be posting again if I have any problems :P

    ermmm..... 2.0.1 suport?
  • cläkes · 1 year ago
Impatiently waiting for PwnageTool 2.0.2, simply because I'd love to have the new firmware including the fixes, (well, and some extra app of course, but not too many actually).
Impatience for firmware 2.0.1 is the key to me, that's why I'm tending to think "Gah, fuck Installer!".
But Devs just... take your time, and rightly so.
I don't know, Installer or Cydia... Whatever...: I'm sure they both will have nice software available for our "humans".
What I really can't do without is the ablilty to dig (and mess=) into the phone and the iPod at my will though, sshing!

Keep up the great job, DevTeam!
    Deep loving thanks,

    Francesco
  • Meka · 1 year ago
anyway! iPhone-Dev and RiPDev and all the other Teams are the best. You make a great job and please just go one with it.
Take all the time you need.

    Greeting from Germany.
  • Jon · 1 year ago
    To all the impatient losers.

Remember that the devteam does this for fun. Its free, it works and they keep us updated. Still not happy???? Its funny because I see a lot of madness in these posts and once the tool is released, I find these same idiots on other forums trying to figure out what they did wrong because their phones don't work anymore. What is the rush to go to 2.0.1?????? If your phone is working, waiting a few days to ensure that the tool is dummy proof (because we all know there are tons of dumb asses in the world) will not kill you. If it pisses you off this much that they are delaying it, well maybe you should ask to be part of the team so that you can commit yourself and all of your spare time to helping people for FREE!!!!!!!

Therefore, I congratulate the devteam for their efforts and guys, take the time it takes. Let the impatient losers upgrade to 2.0.1 and lose the jailbreak. Heck they seem to want this update so bad, let them fuck up their phone and cry about it because they could'nt wait a day or two.

I for one enjoy everything these guys do including the "columbo" clues that they left us to brainstorm on when they were working on the pwnage tool for 2.0. Guys, I'm having a beer on you today for putting up with all of this shit and losers who can't appreciate the good things in life even when they are free.

    Power to the devteam..........
  • Chris. · 1 year ago
I still can't find a clear answer on this...
Will PwnageTool 2.0.2 work with the newest Apple firmware release 2.0.1???

Please someone from the DevTeam respond to this as I think it's a question that still many of us are looking to have answered. Thanks in advance guys... GREAT JOB BTW!!!
  • Lenuam · 1 year ago
Yes, PwnageTool 2.0.2 will work with the latest firmware which is 2.0.1.
Next time please try reading a bit more carefully, because the dev team explained it all very well...

    WOOOW.
    i am truly puzzled.
as i was waiting impatiently for the release, i decided to just upgrade my phone to 2.0.1
when it finished, i realized that my 2G phone was unlocked but cydia was not there. i stopped it from syncing and i sshed into my iphone and put in cydia from there. i thought it will not work cause it was not jail broken. but amazingly it worked . i have cydia and a lot of apps from cydia!
    can anyone explain?

Well, its a good thing that I waited to install Installer. I wasn't about to do all that crap with Open SSH. I saw the youtube tutorial and it was just stroking me the wrong way. I think its awesome that the developers are tossing in the Installer into the new Pwnage that is coming up very soon. I can wait to get it on to my IPhone and start tinkering with it. Spark away!

Danimator: Don't be a dickhead. Do you think we do this on purpose? Your other posts have moaned at us and complained about our releases, I think anyhow I'll personally block your IP address from our update server and I'll ask all other mirror owners to do the same. I also know most of the network engineers at Cogeco, and certainly one in the Ontario node, damn I could probably get a realtime update from their RADIUS servers to blacklist you EVERY time. Perhaps I'll just ask Luc to cap your bandwith some more, yeah that is a good idea.

    Here is one such comment:-

Danimator K, here's a plan, How about enough of these silly "mystery" dates, saying "soon, soon soon". Grow up a little, and just give a firm release date. This has gotten completely and utterly ridiculous with this "it's coming soon..." nonsense. Either release the frickin' thing, or post a comment that says "It's not done yet, we don't know when it'll be done" and get over yourselves.

    And another:-

Danimator Ya, let's hope it's this Sunday, wouldn't surprise me with these guys if it wasn't after all this weeks cryptic nonsense...lol
  • Mexcar007 · 1 year ago
iphonedev, sadly there are alot of these sh*t heads that use your dev software for freaking free and have the guts to complaint about it. I wish you can fu kem over. I have been following you blog since the 2.0 jailbreak release. I have seen a lot of idiots trying to be smart and writing stupid comments in your own blog......if you dont like it get the fu***k out....

  • Nikj14 · 1 year ago
To everyone who complains here ,read their posts. In most cases it will say "this is a hobby, not a job" and if you will also notice it says "we do not accept donations" , the dev team could quit right now and that would be it, they wouldn't lose anything, no money or other profit. so the software will be done when they are sure it is ready , up until that time go twiddle your thumbs or sit in a corner. Thnx for the hard work dev team.
  • Steve · 1 year ago
Indeed! What this means for me is the freedom from a 24 month data plan contract to AT&T at a minimum cost of $480! I would gladly pay the dev team half for their efforts, but we are getting it for free!

You know...those programs probably won't even be on it. The developers have to port their apps to 2.0/2.0.1 (not sure if they're any different), before you can use them on installer 4.

    Silly impatient javi!
    D'oh!
  • Rob · 1 year ago
Thanks for all your hard work! I recently updated with the 2.0.1 after using your software. I hid some things with poof and now they are gone. I don't have Itunes or any other app I purchased via Apple Store. When you release this new version of Pwnage and Cydia is re installed will all my apps come back. I do notice that I have a large amount of space used by something I believe it is all the installs from cydia. If you I can get an email great if not anybody got anything on this?
  • dangerouslaser · 1 year ago
too all the people bitching and moaning about the delay: get a fucking life and wait another day its not a big deal when you look at the grander scheme of things. yeah installer 4 might not be everyone's cup of tea but i can remember how many people were whining when it was announced pwnage tool 2 would only support cydia. now it seems to be just the opposite. and if you can't wait theres already a 2.0.1 jailbroken ipsw floating around the web or you could quit being a noobie bitch and learn how to xpwn the firmware yourself.

Thank you for all your hard work devteam you guys are great!

I don't think Upgrading your firmware to the custom 2.0.1 will unblock your phone.

But I guess there may be a small chance it will.

"devvie 1 hour ago 1 point

Hey Dev Team, when Installer 4 is included with 2.0.2, will it work with OS 2.0.1 and will we have to Re-Pwn to get it or can we SSH it in? Personally I want to Restore to remove the nasty "Downloads What IT Wants When IT wants" Cydia. Can you also tell me if 2.0.2 is coming in the next few hour?

    Thankers!"

    warning: newfag
Cydia doesnt 'download what it wants' you fucking retard. they are called dependencies and are required to run the applications you install. installer does the same thing except it downloads them multiple times for each app, eating up more space. heard of
BSD Subsystem' ? get a clue before you post a stupid fucking comment.

wats up with ziphone compare the coments here to this from his blog. What is wrong does zibri have some kind of hypnotizing beam look at the rest of the comments on his blog so rediculous.
    Hey Zibri,
WOW! Everything you do, from going out of your way to make perfect jailbreaking software, to updating an astounding blog, stuns me. Thank you so much for doing everything you do for us helpless Ipod Touch/Iphone users.
I had a quick question though. I hope you don't mind! I was wondering if you thought restoring my Ipod Touch to the 2.0.1 firmware would be risky or not. If you can't respond, that's fine! I know you must be a very busy guy! By the way, don't let anyone bug you about the 2.0 firmware jailbreak. They don't understand how hard it is. I think people need to get off your back a little.
Anyways, thanks again for everything you've done!!!

    -Austin
    Btw awsome work

No, Zibri censors and moderates all comments. He only allows the nice ones through.

Dev Team is fulla shit - i feel like deja vu right now - waiting for this stupid update to get released so I can fix my phone which got fucked when updated from a pwnd 2.0 to the apple version.....
  • Xenn0X · 1 year ago
then go away from here if team is full of shit and go jump of a building with your iphone.
but no, you have to cry here. people like you need to learn about respect and patience.
  • Hawkeyed · 1 year ago
eh? YOU mess up and then bash the dev team for not releasing a software to fix YOUR mess?

I'm disappointed now (I've been refreshing/waiting for the new PwnageTool all day). I'm still running OS 2.0 - with all the bugs - and was really hoping to be running OS 2.0.1 tonight :(

It's unfortunate that PwnageTool now has another 'external dependency'. When PwnageTool 2.0 first came out, we all became frustrated with words like "soon". Now RipDev is saying "almost". What is *their* definition of "almost"???

In my humble opinion, it would be better to have Installer just be a 'drop-in' package (PwnageTool supports that, right?), and that package could be released independently of PwnageTool.

Sorry to complain - I really don't mean to (and I REALLY appreciate all of your work!). It's just frustrating (again) waiting all day for a release "within the next few hours" only to find out that it's not today.

Oh well, I guess I'll go back to refreshing my browser starting tomorrow :)

    - Paulb
  • iphonedev · 1 year ago
oz_paulb: you really sound like an ungrateful bastard, is the operating speed of your iPhone going to impact your life that much? Even if it is for one day? The option is easy, go and buy a legitimate iPhone from a carrier, then you can complain.
  • oz_paulb · 1 year ago
iphonedev: I was voicing frustration (like others here are) at the fact that you're adding a delay - after a 'promise' of "within the next several hours".

I know that you realize that you probably shouldn't have given that 'promise'. But, you did, and that makes people frustrated when you change your mind. If you had found some major bug and withdrew the release date, that would be one thing. But, to change your minds in order to include some optional 'beta' software that many people are fine doing without: that is what causes the frustration.

And, I realize you're probably tired, but *your* response to me was very bastard-like, IMO. I thought my comment was simply expressing an opinion - your response was over the top, IMO. Again, I assume (hope) that it's just because you are all tired/stressed from the project - but I don't appreciate the reply.

I'm sorry if my original post offended you - I didn't mean for it to. As I said, I'll go back to refreshing my browser tomorrow (and I REALLY DO APPRECIATE all of your work - even if you think I'm a bastard).

  • oz_paulb · 1 year ago
Oh, and the OS 2.0 bugs I'm talking about aren't "operating speed". It's bugs related to MobileMe. I'm hoping that OS 2.0.1 fixes that (although it's quite possible the bugs are still there).

    - Paulb
  • iphonedev · 1 year ago
Feel lucky that you have not been plagued by the other bugs that the mobile me system has been suffering with over the last few weeks, 1 day isn't going to hurt you. MobileMe you pay for, PwnageTool you don't, go figure.
  • oz_paulb · 1 year ago
Actually, I have been hit by lots of MobileMe bugs. The one that really hasn't gone away is the intermittent "push" (which I believe in part to be a bug on the iPhone side - when you don't have a good cell radio connection - that's why I'm crossing my fingers for a 2.0.1 fix).

I think it says a lot that a great tool like PwnageTool is free, where (so far) crappy MobileMe cost me $$$'s. I can only hope that MobileMe will get better as time goes on...
  • kuff · 1 year ago
the 2.0.1 firmware does NOT resolve the MobileMe bugs. In fact, it does not resolve most of the bugs. The sluggishness will return after a day of usage. Apps will crash once the whole thing becomes sluggish and you will have to reboot the phone to keep it working right. So, there is no rush for pwnage 2.0.2 to be released as the bugs are still there. However, for 3G iPhone users, this update would help you guys as there are some 3G baseband issues resolved in this update.

i think devteam should make a poll about this!

include/or/not installer 4 beta in the new release!

    i stand for no!
let the guys finnish testing or whatever and have a proper version 4 in the near future as a drop-in package in cydia's repository

    cheers
  • iphonedev · 1 year ago
We know what we'll do next time, we'll never ever ever mention release dates or any of the upcoming features, we'll go back to mystical mode and say nothing, this way you cannot moan. This isn't anything to do with you, we are doing the work, we are making the decisions, if you don't like it, start your own development team and do a better job.
  • jasperc · 1 year ago
Precisely! If all the whiners would take a moment to realize that you're really doing all the hard work for them—and it *IS* hard work—perhaps they'd be a bit more appreciative of what PwnageTool is & does.

I'm pleasantly surprised that you guys come back after every blog post and keep give us status on it, not to mention new versions of it! keep up the good work & know that there are people out here who realize what kind of effort you guys are putting into this. And who appreciate you for it.
  • AndrewGoldy · 1 year ago
Brilliant reply! This is not a democracy... yet!

It does not matter which way you decide ... there will ALWAYS be people on the "other" side!!!

  • Cerebro · 1 year ago
Listen guys no one can ever please everyone ALL THE TIME. I remember similar 'moans' when you announced that the very same installer WASNT supported.

So do what you think is best for all and go have that beer. ;)

    cheers guys
  • MatTrue · 1 year ago
That's a great attitude. You should be in customer service. Oh wait, you don't have any customers.

You CAN do whatever you want, but people would respect you more if you valued their opinions, just like you want them to value yours. That's why you shared your plans, right?

Or you could be completely closed off like a fortune 500 company!
  • sam · 1 year ago
This isn't a company, this isn't customer service. That is the whole point of their total evasion of donations, selling, or anything that holds them the LEAST reliable in any aspect of what you or anyone else does with what they make.

So shut the fuck up about valuing opinions and what not. Have you seen all the criticizing and hatred that's going on here? I'm glad that iphonedev even takes the time to answer any posts. They could be doing things that benefit them alot more than this. (And those things definitely don't involve anything to your benefit)
  • MatTrue · 1 year ago
So because you were criticized by someone means you get tell some one else to fuck off when they give you feedback on something you shared with them?

If you don't want criticism or feedback, don't post anything. Aetherius simply wanted to start a poll to see if he's not the only one with that opinon. That's what comments are for.

It's a community. Not just a bunch of ass kissing or "STFU" if you got an opinion.
  • sam · 1 year ago
There's a difference between criticizing and being ignorant. Learn it before you open your mouth.
  • scnr · 1 year ago
Sorry, if - and just assumed IF!! - you're not happy with what iphone dev team is currently doing there are two (in numbers: 2) ways of how to act:
    - Leave your bloody phone locked
    - Program your own "hack"

If you're on iphone 2g, I have a third proposition:
    - Get an ATT Card

Do you have a bloody idea what this tool would cost you if you'd have to pay the programmers on a daily basis?

Do you have a f***** clue that they probably have a real-life, family, girlfrieds, kids?

To all people moaning around here: It's really a shame.

They DO a really good job. They really deserve more respect.

If they say they'd wait for Installer 4 they wait for installer 4. They know the inside of the phone probably way better than any of us here.

    Kind Regards!
    scnr
