iPhone-dev blog: Linux, here we come!

  • random · 1 year ago
Just a random comment, From vietnam, the baseband chip is able to be read and replace the baseband information through a hex editor. So i'm assuming doing this is also unique to each and individual iphone? Or can this be replicated into a mass level where we would not have to take apart the phone?

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10107580-1....
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
As far as I know, you need a special device to read and reprogram the chip, and this can only be done by taking apart the phone. The only other way I could imagine doing it (creating a custom baseband "update" with the necessary modifications inside the firmware) is the exact thing the dev team is doing.

This method would work for every iPhone, but I strongly suggest you do not attempt to take it apart

wer kann so krank sein, und damit event sein iphone schrottetn, es gibt fürs iphone eh nix besseres als das system da drauf läuft -.-
  • millhouse · 1 year ago

Another weekend... no unlock. Dont get me wrong, i used to be one of the ppl who told others: "how dare you?! the dev team is doing a great work doing this for us. If you want it so much why not develop it yourself!!".....and "patience is virtue" ..... but now even my own patience has been shattered. Some of you probably know the feeling of having an iphone 3G on a box for months, whatching it on top of the drawer, dreaming of using it and saying: "maybe next sunday is the funday!", but weekend after weekend we get something else... like linux, a new firmware jailbreak (to use with your unusable phone) and taking a picture with with a pinapple over your face is in someway going to soothe our eagerness. I mean... i love this being for free! but if you want to charge us just charge us, but DAMN!!.. give us the unlock already!
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
Heh why have you mentioned all of our posts *other* than the technical updates on where we stand with the 3g unlock :)

It's a work in progress, and we've been trying to show this via the technical demos.

The linux development was made parallel to, and at no cost to, the 3g unlock.
  • DC · 1 year ago
yeah, you're right. The thing is that last 4 post have been about something different than the unlock... we need our fix maaaaan! you know how it is! hehehe
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
:) it's weird how Apple products have that effect
  • cccc · 1 year ago
what effect?can you say something about this?
  • Jimmy · 1 year ago
Lol it's not weird at ALL it's Apple. :)
But I agree with DC 100%. ANY news on the unlock (especially a percentage of completion or an estimated month of release) would be GREAT. The unlock itself next Sunday would be the BEST :P
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
    2008
  • Jimmy · 1 year ago
    You really mean that? xP
Ah well that's great you made my day :) Geting my iPhone mid-Dec. and need the unlock, I don't mind waiting 2 weeks at most.
    THANKS :D You rock
    .
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
    "2008" is for 01.45

If the iPhone you get in 2 weeks is at 2.2, that would not be good (we see no software path yet for those at 2.2 baseband).

For versions other than 01.45 (very good) or 02.28.00 (very bad), it's all to determined.
  • ticefish · 1 year ago
first time to see a date for the release~~
although it doesn't mean too much to me since i am those TBD guy~~

    one question:
if we rate 01.45 as 10(very good), and 02.28 as 0(very bad), what will you give to 02.11.07???
  • Jimmy · 1 year ago
The iPhone is already bought, it's just that I'm getting it mid-December (have someone in the States whose getting it here when they arrive - mid-Dec.). It has the 2.1 software. I was hoping for 2.0, but at least I didn't get the 2.2. TBD huh... damn... :( Hopefully it wouldn't take you guys too long after the 01.45 unlock to port it to the 2.1's baseband right?
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
the problem with that is that when they've finally gotten it to work on the 1.45 baseband, they still don't know if they can use the same approach to unlock the other versions. What if apple updated the baseband in a way that renders the dev teams approach completely inoperable?

anyways, I'm praying for you, since I'm running on 2.1, too. (Or rather, I'm going to run on 2.1, as soon as my broken phone gets back from repair)
  • dsalam · 1 year ago
Does it make any difference to keep your code closed? I mean, right now we cant update to the official baseband because Apple already knows how to patch everything you've done.

    Soooo... undisclose it all!!!
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
Random perturbations to unsigned code running on 3g's baseband can cause permanent brickage to the radio...no exaggeration. It's like the first-gen iPhone's true brickage potential, but even more so.

That's the risk. And so, what's the benefit to a premature release?
  • dsalam · 1 year ago
Explain the risks and release the code so everyone can develop the unlock.

An explanation with fear seems like an Apple explanation.
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
Have you actually read some of the comments on this blog? You wouldn't want them to release the code now, there'd be millions of whining kids who bricked their iPhone within minutes...
  • babene · 1 year ago
and what if I used the pwnage tool 2.2.1 to jailbreak my iPhone?
Is it very good or very bad?
  • kush007bond · 1 year ago
u made my day Musclenerd.. regards and best wishes.....
  • J · 1 year ago
ive been a very good boy and kept 1.45.00, does this mean i will definitly get an unlock before 2009?
  • mrklippel · 1 year ago
really ? that's good news for the ppl who wait for this,

i'm a happy official iphone 3G user i like the subscription i like the unlimited internet

i would be laughing whole day once we can make a call via linux on the iphone...

    it's just FUNDAY's

please please!!give us the unlock already!
  • Jonny Smith · 1 year ago
Who cares about Linux? ... . Who want a "Linux OS on their iPhone 3G"? anyway... This is not what it hurts iPhone 3G users around the world. Apple just "kill" the XSim, you know..."the infamous" 2.2. update... The baseband problem seems to be The Gordian Knot ... This is a WAR not a "cat and mouse game" as someone suggested.. And what we "The Users" got in return? I kinda start loosing my patience... What am I gonna to do? I'm gonna sell it to some sucker as an iPod.
  • mrn · 1 year ago
    whats-the-price for your locked machine?
    seriously?
  • Stevo · 1 year ago
Er.... why would anybody want to install an appalling operating system like Linux on an iPhone?

It's a great piece of hardware and the Apple operating system is awesome. Linux is good for web servers, but nobody can honestly say that any of its WYSIWYG offerings are anywhere near OS X for ease of use or functionality.

It's like buying a Porsche, taking out the engine and dragging it around town with a couple of donkeys.
  • Nick · 1 year ago
    How right you are sir
  • henry · 1 year ago
You're totally right! Yippieee Linux, windows mobile, android.. My days are over with tweaking and hacking around with windows or linux. It's all Apple now... OS X, iPhone.. and maybe I'll get back into some UNIX and Automator fun. Besides that, I want to USE my devices/computer, and not be having to always find workarounds. What more would you want than elegant interfaces and interoperability that actually works. Don't waste your time folks with Linux.. I'd rather use it to do something good in the community.
  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
Yeah that's admirable. Keep hacking away at OS X. What are you gonna do with that? Add some dock visual tweaks? Configure and use the KisMAC WLAN discovery tool to WarDrive? Use OS X in a Windows Environment? Or maybe Use Automator, AppleScript, and the bash shell to automate tasks and create front ends for command-line favorites? Gay, Gay, Gayer and Gayest. What are you bringing to the table that's new and fresh and exciting? Exactly.
  • Henry · 1 year ago
Hello Stinky Saggy balls. I may not have explained myself correctly, and you misunderstood me. What I meant is I had to always fumble around in windows/linux doing "hack" jobs to get things to work. With OS X, I no longer need to.. I can use it to do actual work, and take advantage of Automator/UNIX stuff to improve my workflows and productivity. Not trying to bring anything new to the table... its all for my needs.
  • Henry · 1 year ago
One more thing saggy grandpa balls. By your tone with other folks here... its obvious you have been playing around with your linux hacks, etc. wayy too much. Put the coputer down.. and go for a hike in nature. Life's too short. Apple has liberated me from the half ass measures of Microsoft & Linux.
  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
Oh sir, I can't believe you would make assumptions about somebody over the internet. But since you are dying to know about my life, here ya go: I am in no way deprived of "outside time' . Three small kids will keep you honest in that department. I do love my Linux hacks, and after I put my kids to bed, do other chores around the house, you know priorities, I then sit at my computers and hack the fuck out Linux stuff. The fact that I could get under your skin enough to send you off on a research mission to try and find my thread tone and or maybe some contradictions I might have made against myself . Giving you fuel for your oh so clever, albeit 1 day late retort. Bravo sir, you are a man amongst men for the tongue lashing your have delivered upon me. I shall retire to my musky basement now, where no sunlight shall be allowed to creep in and interfere with my Linux hacks.
  • chipped · 1 year ago
Couldnt have said it better myself :)
  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
No, it's like buying a Porsche and putting a second engine in it. A second engine that gives you the freedom to do things the first engine never could.
  • Stevo · 1 year ago
Like typing in 1980s style command line code?
  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
Please Stevo, tell us what you have contributed to the progressive hacking community. Tell us anything you've ever done that's been worth anything. I think at this point we can all realize you can't. You can't because you're a second rate wanna be hacker/developer. You're actually trying to come in here and gain credibility by telling us Linux is obsolete and no longer serves a function in todays society. Anybody else wanna take this clown on? It should be an easy one, anyone?
  • Blunk · 1 year ago
maybe... in the future we can put Android on our iPhones. Android is based on a linux kernel so its a possibility
  • Naji · 1 year ago
Hi guyz! I have a suggestion!
last day I was watching the "Requiem for a Dream" Movie.....
I know with your nice work we will have an unlock for iPhone 3g in the near future!
why dont you put the soundtrack of this film on it!!!it will be nice:D
    just a COMMENT!!!:D
  • abdul_hassan · 1 year ago
I always loved these dual boots things...

This once again is great work and should be honoured as this... one coming day a Linux UI will run on the iPhone and this will offer a whole new world...

Although I need an unlock for 3G and I see the wish of so many people having their 2G iPods jailbroken I love this project here and I:

    - kindly ask you to respect that the great fellows from the dev-team are doing a great job job for THEIR fun (although most of us actually are gaining a lot because of that without having to do or pay something for it)

    - hope everyone understands that "demanding" things for free is not showing good manners

    - sure wish we'd get an unlock as a Christmas gift BUT try to be patient and polite...

Best wishes for the dev-team and all of you

    Kindest regards,

    abdul_hassan

Great job, now let's build a REAL open platform for everyone to develop things for everyone to use on their phone :D
  • pain · 1 year ago
Great work! But I'm a pain in the ass: PLEASE CONCENTRATE ON SOFTWARE UNLOCK. With time passing by I can't get the idea out of my head that you, dev team, and apple have an special agreement on not releasing the unlock before christmas!
  • chiisana · 1 year ago
Have some faith in the dev team, they're not gonna backstab all of us and work out agreements of that nature with Apple!!
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
This development hasn't slowed down the 3G unlock...the team is pretty big :)
  • ToddJG · 1 year ago
Dude, take off the tin foil hat. Please, be thankful they do this at all.

it sounds like we can only have one funday a week, so the unlock won't be out by this week.

    can we have more? :p

  • Blunk · 1 year ago

    Great Work.

  • cseven · 1 year ago
Next question.....now that Linux can run on it what is the possibility of packet injection? >:)
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
    What kind of packets?
  • dazjorz · 1 year ago
he's probably speaking about wireless packet injection, i.e. WEP cracking (and WPA maybe, because it was just "cracked", haven't looked into that new flaw yet.)
  • Tony · 1 year ago
You can already do it from a jailbroken iphone.. then again you can do it from your PC so I don't see the point.

What this does mean is people will be reverse engineering the wifi and baseband, allowing much more control of the machine. A half decent bluetooth stack ported to the iphone would be a possiblility with this information for example.

Porting android is something I definately look forward to once the kernel is working properly.
  • ticefish · 1 year ago
can someone explain what it will actually bring to us(in a more understandable way) when the system is well developed on iphone???

and is it possible to run andriod on iphone?

    thanks!!
  • Daniel Brierton · 1 year ago
Basically, it'll be possible to run custom made Linux distributions on the iPhone, meaning developers wouldn't have to hack away to get simple things running on the iPhone, they'd have full access to all the hardware for running apps.
Technically speaking, this could be the first step towards Android on the iPhone, although I'm more interested in a custom distribution of Linux, as it would open up the iPhone greatly. No longer leaving Linux users in the dark for managing their iPhones.
  • ticefish · 1 year ago
    thx!

kind of get the point of this project~~
  • dazjorz · 1 year ago
as said on Engadget, iBuntu! :D :P

Hey MuscleNerd, quick question, If i weren't concerned with unlocking my phone to work on other networks, should I be concerned about the 2.2 upgrade when considering running linux on my phone?
  • stivie · 1 year ago
O_O nice .. i need to see the git to believe
  • drewblaisdell · 1 year ago
As long as I can dual-boot into this and the iPhone OS... this would be amazing. The iPhone OS looks nice but is sluggish at times, I would definitely boot linux for a snappier phone and the ability to run linux apps without the iPhone OS overhead.
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
    Yeah it's dual-bootable via openiboot
  • DivX · 1 year ago
woot, an open platform for an apple product. this sounds kinda strange.. :D

will there be a real usabe gui in the future? I'm really looking forward to this!

    P.S. iPhone 2G FTW :)

EDIT: Another question: Is there a possibility to communicate with the baseband on Linux, so we could also use it as a Phone OS?

    Thank you
  • dazjorz · 1 year ago
should be possible... people just need to figure out how, if that's not known yet :-)

Also, the Apple firmware stays in place if you were to try out the linux stuff.

  • joseph · 1 year ago
is there any new news for the ipod touch 2g users or u just forgot about us that we are still waiting

so i think its better spending more time trying to jailbreak the ipod touch 2 g than releasing all this new releases and

    just say sorry ipod touch 2g users still no good news dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i hate this pay a little attention to us { ipod 2g users}
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
Nobody is working on that. If the CPU or bootrom it uses ever makes its way onto the iPhone though, that would change things.
  • Jimmy · 1 year ago
So, what you're saying is that if Apple never uses that CPU or bootrom on an iPhone we will never see an iPod Touch 2G jailbreak?
  • camopigeon342 · 1 year ago
i think he meant that they would start working on the jailbreak for ipod touch 2g and the new firmware that would be needed for apple to do that...he didnt mean that ipod touch 2g wont be jailbroken...he just meant that the 3g unlock is higher on the list of priorities purely because they have been working on that for a lot longer
  • Joseph_is_an_asshole · 1 year ago
you are a fucking asshole. are you paying this people to demand for a jailbreak? fuck off.
  • dazjorz · 1 year ago
calm down, you don't need to get agressive at everyone asking for different devteam priorities here. I don't think they like to read "you are a fucking asshole" more than "just pay a little more attention to us (ipod 2g users)"

    Hey guys,

There is any chance to downgrade the baseband from version 2.2 to 2.1 before next year?

    Tks
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
    Probably not.
  • Jamey · 1 year ago
    Hi MN,

I'm such a version bunny and wasn't aware of what I was doing that I have BB 02.11.07 in my phone (which I think is from 2.1) luckily I now have 2.2 and kept my previous BB and will continue to do so.

I really want a soft unlock for my phone, and I would like to see a listing of each BB version with changes (you are aware of) as each update was/is released... I see that you are working on BB 01.45 and it seems that you are not working with, or know much of the holes that have been plugged by, later versions of BB - would this be fair to say?
I know it's useless saying I really hope you can downgrade my BB or unlock 02.xx but some kind clarification of my chances (which I'm sure diminish with each BB upgrade) would be nice, otherwise I'm going to have to bitch at my carrier to unlock my (purchased outright, but still locked) phone.

my friend i couldnt find a way to create 2.1 custom firmware with windows :(
    can u help me please...
  • Jamey · 1 year ago
To all the dumb-arses that think Jailbreaking will not upgrade your Baseband - using QuickPwn (which Jailbreaks your phone after it has been upgraded by iTunes) appears to be the only way to JAILBREAK on Windoze, since it is done after you have applied a new firmware using iTunes this means the Baseband of your iPhone will already have been upgraded.

At the moment, the only way to avoid upgrading your BB is by using PwnageTool which is only available for Mac OS (which if you are clever can run on a regular PC).
  • chrysler · 1 year ago
i used it in usa 2 moths ago and i installed 2.1

Okay, so I want to buy the iPhone 3G, and since I DON'T want the 2.2 firmware on it so I can unlock later, is there ANY way to get the 2.1 firmware with a new iPhone from an AT&T store? I'm buying today (Saturday).

Can I just tell the store guy I want 2.1 firmware and he'll have some in stock and give me or what?
  • MegaEduX · 1 year ago
Don't guess so. Though you can always try.
  • IJ_S · 1 year ago
I have had my 3G iPhone for more than 3 months, working just as an ipod (I have not jailbroken it or anything). Its running 2.0.2, Can you plz tell me the safest way to jailbreak, if at all, b.c I can't even get any more apps from the apple store now as most of them want 2.1 The reason is I don't want to have any probs when the unlock becomes available (I am a tmobile user) since I have already waited so long and don't want to do anything stupid as we are pretty close now (i think). I read that I should not use quickpwn and use pwnage tool, but I don't know much about it after that. THanks and Great work on the linux!
  • ToddJG · 1 year ago
Check the post called "The Man From DelMonte - He say Yes!"
There is a guide for this - basically, you will need to use PwnageTool (Mac only) and create your custom firmware that won't update the baseband. Good guide is here: http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1558.

impressive stuff really i have been monitoring the progress since the first jailbreak and it has come togethor so quickly, although theirs a long way to go this could be the start of something interesting..
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
    This is just great!!
oh, and what about that guy from Finland (if I'm not mistaken) who claims to have managed to dualboot his iPhone 3G with both the iPhoneOS and Windows mobile? Has that guy released anything substantial, or is he keeping that gem to himself (if it's true, that is)?
will it be possible to multiboot iPhoneOS with iPhonelinux, or maybe Android (once it becomes available, and I'm sure it won't be long), and Windows Mobile? That would be the absolute coup de grace for the Samsung Omnia ("oh, look, it's completely customizeable, look, it has a mouse pointer, it looks like vista... blah blah blah")

anyways, how possible would an android port be? I mean, would it be as "easy" (don't misunderstand me, I know porting something across platforms can be a pain in the ass), as porting other apps to the iPhone? (you know, the gameboy , snes , nes, etc. emus that are already available)

Wow, the (pwned) Phone gets more and more awesome every time you guys release a new blog post...
imagine what all those people who don't want to jailbreak are missing!!
  • Shadowriver · 1 year ago
Android source is already available at source.android.com
  • Jon · 1 year ago
The guy from Finland was a fake, look on engadget, not sure how long ago, but they dug up the fakeness of the finnish guy.

Also, once they succesfully port all they drivers to linux for iphone, they will have huge understanding of how the hardware works, so then android will be easier than the original linux port
  • Fat_Toni · 1 year ago
uhm yeah nice work but i dont understand that o_O What should i (we) do with linux on the iphone? sure, i like linux on my computers, but what should i do with it on the iphone? I like the modified os x for iphone o_O

Hi. how do I do this

    2. sudo ./loadibec openiboot-2g.img3
    - Or -3g, -ipod, depending on your platform.
    3. sudo ./oibc
    4. nor_read 0x09000000 0x0 1048576
    5. ~norbackup.dump:1048576
    - This will create a file called norbackup.dump in your
current directory. GUARD IT WITH YOUR LIFE.
    6. install
    7. After 'install' has finished, type in: reboot.
    8. You ought to see the openiboot menu.

I am running vista. with what utility do I do that?
  • meme · 1 year ago
    Did you read the instructions?

BE WARNED THAT THESE STEPS ARE NOT INTENDED FOR NOVICES. YOU ATTEMPT THIS AT
YOUR OWN RISK. AT THIS TIME, WE CANNOT AFFORD THE EFFORT REQUIRED TO GIVE
SUPPORT TO NOVICES AND/OR RESCUE THEM FROM THEIR OWN ACTIONS.

Although unlikely, if the installation goes wrong, you may have to perform a
DFU restore on your iPhone. If you do not know how to do that, you should not
follow these steps. You should also know how to use iRecovery (or similar) and
the fsboot command to "kick an iPhone out of recovery mode". If you do not
know how to do that, you should not follow these steps.

The installation of openiboot itself is safe, but openiboot has the facility
to erase device-specific information from your NOR flash. If you did not make
a backup, and execute the commands necessary to make openiboot erase that
information, it is gone forever and your device may never boot properly again.

The instructions below will show you how to make such a backup before any
    changes are made.

If you know what this means, you can continue. But I don't think you know.
If you want to do it, then you have to use LINUX for this. ON YOUR COMPUTER. You cannot do that with Windows.
  • me · 1 year ago
ok dude, I have ubuntu up and running. I know my way around it, the shell and stuff, but I never used it on my iphone, its just so new to me. couldnt someone just post a nice how-to for understanding novices like me?
at least I get it, but I just dont know how to do it. much like a painting critic. dont really know how to paint, but surely can evaluate a work of art.
  • meme · 1 year ago
I can't help you from this point. But think twice before you do this. Linux on the iPhone isn't really finished.
  • Tony · 1 year ago
In fact all it appears to have is a framebuffer and a serial port, which is pretty basic. You'll be able to run a serial console to it and that's about it. The hard work is yet to be done - wifi, sound, baseband, touchscreen ,etc.

Really the only people who should be installing this are those ready to work on further drivers. If you want to learn the unix command line trying it from a barely ported stripped down OS over a serial console just doesn't make sense.
  • chiisana · 1 year ago
What is your intentions of running linux on iPhone if you do not understand the basic and not-so-basic commands outlined in the instructions?

If you cannot provide a justifiable reason, then I'd strongly suggest you to not do it. Because no one will be here to babysit you when things go horribly wrong.

... and no, just to show your e-peen that you've done it is not a valid reason.
  • me · 1 year ago
I have no idea what you meen when you say e-peen, but I understand what an opensource os means, even at premature levels like this kernel. and btw, whats wrong with people being curious and wanting to learn about stuff? you think that if you act that way people will switch to linux? see, thats y 3 quarters or more of the planet is running windows. its way more customizable than mac using basic regedit, gpedit.msc, services.msc, acsually, regedit does it all, but I dont expect you linux and mac ,,bravehearts,, to understand that. windows is like nice shiny plasteline that you can mold which so ever way you want it, when Mac is like a hardheaded OS that is functionally retarded at some point, because of tying your hands like crazy......... linux lacks common UI sense sometimes, but I personally prefer it over MAC (im talking about Mac Desktop OS as well as mobile)........
Because half of the worlds computing geeks never bothered trying a licensed windows OS, and thus having a COMPLETE windows experience, they freakin complain about products they steal off torrent sites. dont get me wrong, I used to do that A LOT. then I came to my senses, and since I am using a licensed windows, IM IN A DIFFERENT WORLD!!!!!!!!!
I am only using copyrighted software now, no more pirating, I'm buying what I need, and I could write a 1 terrabyte txy file about how much more better it is..................................................
so what is your problem if I dont know EVERYTHING about linux anyways?
at least be thankfull that I am willing to learn, and aid its perisable popularity.......

    sorry, I meant txt file

You obviously didn't really use it (enough) to get to know the good parts.

Please bear in mind that you've used Windows for at least 10 years now.
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
Forget it. You shouldn't tinker with things you don't have any idea of. Really, you could completely destroy every functionality of your iPhone doing this, and it won't be worth it, unless you really know your way around a UNIX shell, which you obviously don't. It's just not worth bricking your shiny new phone to get white text on a black screen that you can't interact with at all.

(fyi, I'm not gonna do this myself. It's too much of a risk only to get a shell that I have on the PC that I need to have in order to make this modification in the first place...)

Not good. Until now Apple had no real reason to stop jailbreaking & unlocking. Now they WILL try everything to stop any Non-Apple OS on the phone.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
On the contrary, remember when they first got windows xp to run on an intel-based mac? Apple not only accepted it, but claimed dual booting as a feature.
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
On the contrary, remember when they first got OS X to run on a normal desktop PC? Apple not only rejected it, but claimed it illegal according to their license agreement.
  • Jon · 1 year ago
Thats because apple cares about selling hardware, not software. Hardware is almost all of there revenue. The software is what makes the hardware special. And when they sell the software with the hardware, who cares if the uses continues to use the software, as long as they get it in the first place?

Dev team, what can be the use of linux on the iphone once its fully running? More games and applications? Or will it be like ubuntu? A complete replacement of the os the iphone is running on?
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
Linux on the iPhone would be a complete replacement OS, since the iPhone OS wouldn't bee called at any time. This new OS could become anything form a simple customizable alternative version of iPhone OS to a full-fledged desktop OS featuring cool stuff like compiz, beryl, and so on.

but no, there won't be more games and applications for iPhoneOS. there will be a completely new OS.

i finally got things to work,

what worked for me was adding a step for the part : INSTALLING OPENIBOOT

    1. Put your iPhone in Recovery Mode
    2. sudo ./loadibec openiboot-2g.img3
    - Or -3g, -ipod, depending on your platform.
    ---
Use the Hold button to navigate the menu. Push the Home button
    when openiboot client is selected.
    ---

    3. sudo ./oibc
    4. nor_read 0x09000000 0x0 1048576
    5. ~norbackup.dump:1048576
    - This will create a file called norbackup.dump in your
current directory. GUARD IT WITH YOUR LIFE.
    6. install
    7. After 'install' has finished, type in: reboot.
    8. You ought to see the openiboot menu.
    -------

i think this step makes the steps below work, because the openiboot commands will only work when in openiboot mode

It seems like everyone wants to boot Android, and yes that would be totally 100% awesome.

Any thoughts about Ubuntu Mobile? I understand it's built around a certain processor, and I'm no tech guru at all, but I enjoy Ubuntu as a desktop distro. It's really early in the process for Linux on the iPhone (and I am very, very excited and humbled at this!) but is the idea of Ubuntu plausible for the iPhone?

Or are you (whoever's working on this project) planning a custom distro?

A Debian fork on a mobile device would be plain AWESOME!

So how long will it be before linux becomes fully and i mean fully ported for the iPhone. i mean i wanna use the touch screen and have linux fully functional before I put it on my phone.
  • Daijizai · 1 year ago
Not to sound antagonistic, nut as soon as you do it. Linux is a user community developed OS. If you want something ported, start a project.

If you mean how long till all the hardware is useable then using OpenMoko as a guideline, I would say most of the basic trailblazing has already been done, and if you forgo multitouch, then we are looking at 6 - 8 months for basic usability. Baseband will probably not work - reliably - for a year...
  • Daijizai · 1 year ago
btw, nut was supposed to read but...
  • chuckrandycodyUSAUSA! · 1 year ago
Cool - Now any update on the baseband hack? Im a software engineer too and I cant see what the problem is. You have cracked the code, unlocked phones are avalible to buy so why dont you compare the differences in the code?

Dont get me wrong - your work is hugely appreciated, im just sick of this turbo SIM in my phone!
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
Don't get me wrong, but this doesn't sound very much like what a software engineer would say.
If you were a software engineer, or an iPhone literate user, you'd know that the firmware used for locked and unlocked iPhones are exactly the same.
If you were a software engineer or a follower of this blog, you'd know that there's no difference to spot. Unlocked phones are identified as such by the baseband chip and a special authorization number (a serial key). just "entering" an unlocked serial key may unlock the phone, but as soon as you reboot, you'll see hopw faulty the approach is. also, some people have called upon the devteam to "bruteforce" this key (that means tell a computer to try out all different possibilities until it's found the right one), but this would only mean that that one iPhone would be unlocked, and it would take an eternity.

the difference is engraved into the hardware of the iPhone you buy.
(if I said something wrong, please correct me)
  • Jimmy · 1 year ago
Awww was hoping for some unlock news. Ah well I guess this is cool too :)
There's always next week (*hints devteam at demo on Sunday*)
2 more weeks before I get my iPhone, that's 2 fundays for you guys to release the unlock. I really hope you have it up by Christmas (or tell us you will have it up by then.)

By the way, the 2.2's baseband is off-limits, but the 2.1 baseband is fine for unlocks right? Thanks.

    You guys rock!! :D

    @Dev-team
I know this is completely unrelated to this thread, but I'm not sure if older threads such as the one entitled "Sir step away from the keyboard" or whatever is still being constantly monitored, so I'm trying my lucks posting here...

There is a torrent floating of iPhone 3G 2.2 firmware image floating about. It claims that the new pwnage tool does not allow creation of custom pwned firmware image with the baseband update. Is there any truth in that? I am stuck with only Windows, so I cannot make the image myself, nor use Pwnage tool to even verify their claims. I know you guys won't have time to download the whole thing just to verify it for me, so can you please just confirm that it is true that it is not possible to cerate a custom firmware image with baseband upgrade? I'm just very worried if they (IE: Apple Insurgents) put a normal image there, and screw us over for the soft unlock :X
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
PwnageTool won't create a custom IPSW that enables 3G baseband update, even if the user wants. But that doesn't necessarily mean the ipsw you're talking about is safe. If that ipsw you have does allow the baseband update, it wouldn't be due to the user who created it doing something wrong (make sure it's not just a copy of the Apple ipsw too :))
  • chiisana · 1 year ago
Thanks for the confirmation and thanks for the reminder. I will grab Apple's ipsw now, and check their crc32 and md5 checksums to verify that they're not the same file!! :)
  • Jamey · 1 year ago
Using a checksum to verify the file is not the same as the Apple release doesn't mean that it's not going to update your BB. Try to use a Mac and PwnageTool to create your IPSW, and if you can't get a Mac try the osx86 project or some other way to get Mac OS X on your PC...
  • chiisana · 1 year ago
    Yea, about that...
Some of us unfortunately do no have access to Mac with administrative access...
For example, myself, software developer for windows and web appliances -> XP/Vista/Debian in my mix
My friends are avid geeks/gamers, so they're all XP/Vista only.
Office is all XP/Vista, too, for obvious reasons as myself.
Campus have a few Mac labs, but when running pwnage tool, system asks me for admin password, which for obvious reasons campus will not provide.

If it was so easy as you said, I wouldve done it already. But unfortunately that is not the case for everyone.

Anywys the downloaded ipsw was giving error 1604 non stop. So I've gave up and gone back to my still jailed 2.0.1. I've got no use for jailbreak except to unlock anyways. Only wantted to upgrade so I can use some of my paid apps which now requires higher firmware number (and not use any of the new non existant features)...
, so it is impossible to build our own custom firmware.
  • Jamey · 1 year ago
If you have (your own) PC running Linux then google for Mac OS X on PC hardware... I used to Mac OS X on my HP Laptop before I bought a Real Mac (I've also never run Windoze on my Mac and my old laptop now runs Linux 24/7).

You guys are saying that we won't be able to do any kind of software unlock on the 2G iPod because in this model the lock relays directly on the hardware?? can we expect any unlock in the future? Thanks
  • Jimmy · 1 year ago
Guys, is the 2.1 software good for the potential (soon ;-) unlock or is it only the 2.0 that will be unlocked? I know the 2.2's off limits unless I have PwnageTool (don't because no Mac and no one I know has one either) - but is the 2.1 baseband alright for the unlock? Can't wait for it please release it soon :)
    Thanks!! :D

QUESTION FOR DEV TEAM!!! but first i would like to say thank you guys so much for the work on the unlock software and everything you guys are doing to make this all happen. Without you guys none of this would even be possible. No unlocked iphone 2g or let alone 3g. and i think a lot of people miss that point cause they want the 3g unlock so bad.
ok so question. I am using an unlocked iphone 2g with Tmobile. Am i able to access the app store and purchase things on there even though im on tmobile? i have cydia and installer but the app store has some things i would like to have on my iphone. Is that possible? Thanks again guys.
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
Yes. There's no way you'd be excluded from the App Store. You can safely download App Store/iTunes Store stuff onto your iPhone
  • Macgyver1 · 1 year ago
I know the Ipod Touch 2G isn't a priority b/c theres no incentive yet. How about you releasing anything you have on the topic for the masses/crowd to work on their own. It would give all us touch owners something to work and keep us pacified. I would enjoy trying to crack the ipod touch 2G myself given any new insight you might have discovered.

    Thanks as always Dev Team!

This is a landmark in the iPhone sub-culture and yet when I come here to see some interesting perspectives and what this will bring and what we can achieve with this new world of opportunities. Yet I see a wall of BB, Base Band, Unlock whatnot..... And its the same for every post.

Now don't get me wrong.. I usually just ignore the kids writing here but its just getting more and more frustrating for each interesting post you guys make that I have to read through all the posts with about 50% of them being totally off topic and directly related to a soft-unlock.

Maybe you guys should release a fake unlock that puts the target iPhones into fire, so all the people waiting for the unlock will stop spamming for em...

    In other news....

This is very very interesting and I certainly can't wait to see a fully working android copy running on the iPhone.
  • chuckrandycodyUSAUSA! · 1 year ago

You have just proven Mads point so well. If you tried to be ironic, it failed.

If I would be a developer, it would dishearten me to continue too work to see so many impatient and ungrateful kids here on the board. The world, especially the internet, is a place where to many dump people have too much money.
But thank you for buying the stuff on Apples behalft, please idiots, give us more money and disrespect the communities, that way you will stay isolated, uninformed customers with high demands and no knowledge, so we can sell more shit to you.

  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
Ok. GATHER 'ROUND EVEYBODY, LISTEN UP NOW. Johnny_smith would appreciate it if everyone could post on topic, nevermind that this thread has a topic heading "Linux-Here We Come". If it's not about the 3g unlock then it's off-topic! End of story! We need to stay focused here people, keep our eye on the prize so that johnny_smith can unlock his iPhone. It's not fair to him that we're not giving him our undivided attention, he deserves it and he also deserves to get pissed at us when when slip a little. But slip too far we won't, because johnny_smith is always looking over our shoulder and breathing down our neck, ready to "keep it real" the moment we get sidetracked by a pretty little Linux flying freely in the sky. Thank you for your cooperation.

...In 333 BC, while wintering at Gordium, Alexander attempted to untie the knot. When he could find no end to the knot, to unbind it, he sliced it in half with a stroke of his sword, producing the required ends (the so-called "Alexandrian solution", taken by the Hellenic Army IV Army Corps as their motto). Once Alexander had sliced the knot with a sword-stroke, his biographers claimed in retrospect that an oracle further prophesied that the one to untie the knot would become the king of Asia....

    source Wikipedia.
  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
Very prolific johnny_smith. Is the "knot" supposed to represent Apple? And maybe Alexander is represented by Zibri, and lastly, The Dev-Team will soon be the "kings of asia" becaue they've untied the "knot"? Lemme know, I love this vague, metaphorical shit.
  • Sergiuria · 1 year ago
Just curious. Why do you think that Zibri, would be Alexander?
  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
Because in the story, Alexander couldn't properly untie the know so he used brute force and cut it in half with his sword. Much like when Zibri couldn't properly "unlock" an iPhone and thousands of peoples iPhones were rendered useless or certain functions didn't properly work (WiFi). Just my interpretation.
  • ToddJG · 1 year ago
Here is my idea for a name for the unlocker: Leonidas
For those who do not know him, check wikipedia - he led the Spartans against the Xerxe's Persians at Thermopylae. (Or, for the non-readers amongst us, rent the movie 300.) Anyway, here is why:
    1. It is a metaphor for the DEV Team - the small band fighting the giant masses (Apple)
    2. It symbolizes that ultimate victory is not the only goal - it is the honor of the battle's cause
    3. It is also a cat-related reference
    a) The dev-tem clearly likes cats
    b) Apple's cat theme for ISX
    c) Dev-team will be the cat in the cat and mouse game - for now at least - till 2.3 or 3.0 or whatever ;-)

Mythology is such a great source for these names. That is my 2 cents - good luck guys.

  • searayx350 · 1 year ago
I feel almost as ignorant to “bitch” about “bitching” but I feel something has to be said…

Let me start by stating that I would love nothing more than to check this site and see “3G Unlocked!” but until that happens I will (as we all should) patiently wait and be thankful that people have used their PERSONAL time to work on something FOR FREE.

How many of you complainers have donated ANY of your time for free. Does your employer ask you to do work for FREE – No? Most people do NOT do things for free; it is a VERY small percentage of people that actually do – do the math…

Ok, so Linux/Unix doesn’t interest you; I don’t see myself installing it any time soon either but HELLO, this is HUGE and the fact that its available to us to leach and benefit from (by the Dev Teams hard work) is just amazing (not nearly as amazing as those who are whining about what the Dev Team isn’t doing for them lately).

Look – Just hold your tong’s so we don’t PISS off the only people who can help the majority of us who are either incapable or that don’t have the time to do it ourselves. Not to say we shouldn’t voice our honest opinions; just be respectful about it and if you don’t like waiting, invest into your own development project.

Thanks to the Dev Team for another TERRIFIC release; this shows how far you guys have come and I am excited to watch it all evolve. Speaking of evolve, how about 3GEvolved for the unlock (as in it has evolved from a carrier locked unilateral device to a multi-carrier device with more capabilities?

Thanks for this (and all your releases) - Good day everyone,

Hi MuscleNerd i just wonted to ask you that my iphone 3g baseband is 02.11.07 so is there any chance my iphone to be unlocked.

Thanks in advance and regards to you and all dev team members you rock.
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
    At the moment, no.
The dev team is only concentrating on unlocking the version 1.45.00 of the iPhone 3G Baseband chip, and possible backdoors used for this unlocking method might have been fixed on later releases, so it's impossible to know in advance whether the unlock will ever be possible on later versions, unless they somehow find a way of downgrading the baseband... which brings me to my next question...
  • chromedome · 1 year ago
Actually 2.11.07 is still good as it can be downgraded where the 2.2 baseband can not be. Yes the unlock is based on 1.45, but I think they have verified that all but the latest 2.2 baseband can be downgraded t. 1.45. Hopefully they can use the same techniques on 2.11.07 to unlock it as well. Unfortunately Apple closed the holes in 2.2.
  • searayx350 · 1 year ago
    chromedome --

Can you please verify where you read this? I'm sure your right but I cant seem to find anything specific relating to 3G with the exception of 1.45.

To my knowledge there has only been vague references to the 3G baseband version. I believe that (based on the posts and numerous questions of this nature) the Dev Team has been intentionally evasive in answering anything specific - not a bad thing; just an observation based only on what i have read.

I am sure they (the Dev Team) have their reasons for the quasi clandestine behavior surrounding the unlock.

Just curious - could you please point me to where you found this so I can be more informed...

BTW, I still like the idea of 3GEvolved (easy to abbreviate to 3GE) for the possible name of the unlock - IMHO -

    Regards,

    ~~~Searay~~~
  • chromedome · 1 year ago
    I can't point you at the exact comment, but MuscleNerd and others on the team have mentioned this.... This is why 2.2 is so bad... They have said all holes are patched, but previous updates (and basebands) are OK - at least they can be downgraded....
  • searayx350 · 1 year ago
    I knew 2.2 was bad but the confusion stemmed from the 1.48 comment. I do remember there being statements that above 1.48 (not 2.2) MAY be able to be downgraded but I must say that ANY direct question relating to anything above 1.48 has gone unanswered (to my knowledge) and I'm sure there is good reason for this.
    I have personally asked out of curiosity myself since my BB inadvertently got updated to 2.11.07 during a Pwn to FW 2.1 and I have yet to get any replies from any Dev Team member (this let me know to Not ask - LOL).
    Like I said, I'm sure your right but I personally cant find it - only that it may be possible.
    Thanks for the reply my friend.
    ~~~Searay~~~
  • millhouse · 1 year ago
    This one is for MuscleNerd:
Ah, I know that question has probably been answered quite a few times, but isn't there a software method of overwriting and simply updating the baseband firmware?
I mean, iTunes can just include a Base Band firmware update into their ipsw's, so it must be possible to update the firmware by software methods. I just guess this isn't possible because of the code signature on the firmware update, right? So that newer Baseband firmware versions won't allow for unsigned code to be run (including updates that would revert the baseband to a previous version)?

Didn't you update and revert quite a few times yourselves during the course of exploring this wonderfully locked down chip?
I'm just wondering since having updated the baseband to a newer version seems to be such a deadly verdict that I'm surprised Apple didn't equip the chip with a backdoor...
  • Defrim · 1 year ago

It appears to be an internal sim proxy, which is why it doesn't work if the user upgrades to baseband 02.28.00.
  • Me · 1 year ago
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
No it doesn't. Read the article.

This is hardware based downgrade of the firmware to one that works better with internal sim proxies. As the article says, upgrading one of these phones to 2.2's baseband kills the unlock the same way it kills all the other sim proxies.
  • OnAnotherNote · 1 year ago
are you suggesting that those stuck with 02.28.00 (as a last resort) can crack open their phones and downgrade?
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
The baseband NOR chip isn't "secure" in and of itself. It's just a NOR+PRAM with well-defined interfaces and operation. If you can get that chip out and into a compatible programmer, you can erase it and reprogram it all you like.

However, the baseband CPU that reads from this NOR chip still integrity-checks the code before running it. So you'll only be able to stick Apple-signed, non-modified code into the NOR if you want the baseband to use it. That's what TA_Mobile is doing in the above article.

To remove the chip, program it, and resolder it takes very specialized skills. It's nowhere near as simple as the 2G iPhone A17 hardware hack (which many people found difficult to perform).

    Gruss,
    Abdul_Hassan

P.S. Saggy .... 210 Grad, sonst war es okay ;-)

Will a X-window system like gnome or KDE be ported to this? think of the possibilities if it was!

hey quick question, sorry i know its off topic but can i jailbreak and unlock an iPhone 2g to work on my existing verizon wireless service?

i friend is giving me an iPhone 2g cuz he got 2 new 3g's and im getting rid of my iPod Touch 2g to pay him for it, but i though that would be awesome if i could get it to replace my stupid old "envy" cell phone as well..

If anyone can point me in the right direction or tell me its impossible please do so
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
Yes. Just use QuickPwn on your iPhone 2G to both jailbreak and unlock it.
  • chromedome · 1 year ago
Verizon is a CDMA network, not GSM. Supposedly the SIM chips they do offer (for world phones - only 2 or 3 of the whole lineup) are only for roaming outside the uS and will not work in the US, and if they did, you would pay the high roaming fee.

Does your VZW have a SIM card you can put into the iPhone?
  • mrburns05 · 1 year ago
im not sure yet, ill get it later this evening its about 4am (GMT -8:00 Pacific time )right now.

but it doesnt matter, if verizon is CDMA, and iPhone is GSM then "What we have here is a failure to communicate" - right?...

    Im not going to roam
  • chromedome · 1 year ago
    Yep... no roam for you!

Sweet, When is there likely to be a ipod touch 2nd gen jailbreak? Wouldn't a jailbreak of a new ipod touch be easier and quicker than a 3g iphone unlock?? And me and many other people would love to have a jailbreak for the new ipod touch before the end of the year.

Another thought on the name (although it could cause some confusion).

    Pwn3g or Pwn3ge

    Or... more esoteric...

    RRCrossing

(A play on the acronym RRC or Radio Resource Control)
  • Clintepppppppppps · 1 year ago
No! Nothing with "pwn" in the title. Not only is stupid it's confusing. Still love ya dev team though!

    Hi,

first congratulations on that fabulous job, you are doing! I think, it is just amazing.

I have a question concerning officially unlocked 3G iPhones. I have one of those here. The phone is from Belgium and I am in Germany. After I bought it, I just activated it using my German itunes-Account and it works ever since with an unofficial carrier. Currently the phone is on OS 2.1 (it came with it and it is now jailbroken with QuickPwn) and I would like to update to 2.2. I thought about upgrading using the vanilla ipsw and jailbreaking afterwards using Quickpwn again. However, on the internet there are rumors that 2.2 re-locks legally simlock-free phones if not upgraded from within the country they were bought (or at least from within such an iTunes -Account). One report is here: http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/12/02/iphone-os.... Also, Apple themselves claims in their list on the internet that Belgium iPhones are WITH a carrier lock (if you chose any other language than english. The tick is only not there in the english version of this list). So, do you know, if i would lose my legally paid for freeness of chosing any carrier, if I upgrade with the vanilla ipsw? Thanks for your help.

does this mean that windows on iphone is close?
  • beerglass007 · 1 year ago
    why?
  • pumpkin · 1 year ago
    why not? :P
  • 21cdb · 1 year ago
Because your #1 argument for not being able to pass over a 3G unlock is that you all are busy and have limited time! It seems still enough time to come up with a useless (but still great) linux version for the iPhone!?
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
The team members have diverse interests and the 3G unlock has not been slowed down by this project.
  • Venom · 1 year ago
I would suggest "The G-Spot" for your request " (someone please suggest a good name for this last one) ;)
  • Saggy Old Man Balls · 1 year ago
"useless" It's obvious you are inept at seeing the big picture or the possibilities with this. You should just stay inside that comfortable little box and never come out...ever. I hate you.

    not an unlock for 3G...
  • ironiridis · 1 year ago
Oh FFS. Grow up; if you can't appreciate what you have for free anyway, you don't deserve to bitch about what you aren't getting FOR FREE. If you want it so bad, go do it yourself.

  • anon · 1 year ago
if only tgis site had something for the iPod touch 2g. anything. but whatever go ahead and exclude us because you're afraid of apple making your job a little more challenging later. GG
  • Germanboy · 1 year ago
muscle nerd you say that you don't publish a IPod 2G Jailbreak before apple brings a new generation of ipods/phones? sorry but thats stupid. The IPhone 3G could be use with a ProxySim and the 2.1 is JAILBROKEN!
the sotware unlock is just an upgrade, so you don't ned the proxy. We IPod touch 2G users just have the app store......
if you have an iphone you can jailbreak it an use it (ok not with the 2.2 but wayne), but the point is you can use an IPhone to 100% and we Touch 2G users not, we're waiting since over 2 monts! pls give me an answer, and sorry for my very bad english i hope you can understand me.
  • MuscleNerd · 1 year ago
The jailbreak is an essential component of software-based iPhone carrier unlocks. It always has been: A17 (semi-hardware), IPSF, anySIM, VirginTool, BootNeuter, and the potential 3G soft unlock (someone please suggest a good name for this last one) all depend on there being a jailbreak. There's no such dependency in the iPod Touch.
  • sbuild · 1 year ago
We just want to know HAS the SOFTWARE-UNLOCK been already finished?
IF you want a name for it ~I think lots of DEV FANS can help you! But just give us the SOFTWARE-UNLOCK soon! Oh no ~not soon~It`s now! Right now~
  • bluesky_nl · 1 year ago
Come on ! give these guys a break.
i wouldn't release any unlock before everybody stops naggin'!

DevTeam, keep up the good work, including running linux on the iphone
  • mrbman · 1 year ago
for the 3G software unlock I recommend something along the lines of "The Fruition of The Dev-Teams Hard Work Bringing Freedom To iPhone 3G Users" But since thats kinda long, why not just call it "The Unlock" or "iUnlock" :) enjoy

how about dev/null/lock or something like that? You know, I love how you redirect all donations to dev/null/
  • Beebawble · 1 year ago
    Aw boo hoo!

Those with the 2G ipod touch just need to accept this.

---- You are entitled to nothing. You don't do any of the work, thus you have no entitlement to jailbreak. ----

You bought a device less people are going to have (first gen ipod touch was a much easier hacked byproduct of hacking the original iphone) but right now, the priority for the devs is hacking the Iphone 3G. Why? Because they have that phone themselves. They hack for their own pleasure and their own reward.

Seriously. And this is to ANYONE who badgers a hacker.

Listen to yourselves. Would you walk up to someone in the street and bitch out loud to someone because they haven't worked for free on a device that you have? No? Well respect the internet.

Case in point... Shutup about Itouch 2g already.
  • clint epps · 1 year ago
dude - get over it. Go and buy an iphone if youre that annoyed by it. No one cares about 2G ipod touch. Its a 1st gen with a volume button and a speaker. I however, wait with baited breathe for the 3g soft unlock!

All this talk about Linux on the iPhone and what not has reminded me of something my grandpapi used to tell me when I was only knee high to a grasshopper. Enjoy:

There once was a fellow named Dave,
Who kept a dead whore in a cave.
    I have to admit,
    She smelled like shit,
But, think of the money he saved!
