Sunshine, you need to remember that most of us would not have any 3rd party programs or flexibility of providers if it was not for people like the Dev team. As a lot of other people have already said - we want it right and are prepared to wait for that. I for one am amazed with what the Dec team do and hope they keep it up! You may not like them but show them due respect for what they have accomplished.

I really want the Pwnage tool too, but I'm happy to wait until it's ready, cos I'd prefer something that won't turn my iphone into a paperweight. And if that take 2 weeks, or 2 months, then that's how long it'll take.

Like someone else said, if you bought an iPhone 3G on the basis that there would be an unlock released, then that's your own decision - and a calculated risk on your part.

The devteam haven't said they won't release it, just that it'll take some more time. So, get a grip - go watch the telly, or do something more constructive than bitching and moaning.

It's just as well I'm not on the devteam - I'd probably tell you we'd finished it, but all you bitchers and moaners weren't gonna get it.

but if they would have released a version for 1st gen iphones a lot of persons would be happy and satisfied. The amount of 1st gen iphones without contract is huge. The group of persons who bought a iphone 3g without contract is very small. These 3g users will cry when they recognize that they don't have an unlock for 3g. Believe me, some of thems are doing interviews and enjoy public attention (i do not mean the real coders - thanks to them)

Yeah, I hear ya. I have a 2G iPhone, so the only reason I'm waiting for this tool is so I can put 2.0 on it (I need 2.0 for the Appstore stuff my company is doing), as my iPhone is already unlocked to Vodafone UK.

On the 3G users - nobody ever said an unlock would be released but they went ahead and bought it anyway. The press are lapping up all this negative publicity - in the absence of real news, they just want something to write and this is easy pickings for them.

But I think there have people who have their 2G iPhones stuck in 2.0 — just like me a few hours before now — and I understand that they have difficulty to wait.
Dev Team should release a first version and then update it, but I understand that they doesn't want to have to be responsible of bricked iPhones 3G or 2.0.1

They have a downgrading tutorial on iClarified that will allow you to go from 2.0 back to 1.1.4.

I tested all that is on the net, nothing works.
I spent hours to find a solution.
All the tutorials make the iPhone go back to 1.1.4, but then it's impossible to do anything with the phone part of the iPhone.

To go back to version 1.1.4 is not the big problem, the problem is that it doesn't work, like you say :)
The reason why it doesn't work is the wrong Baseband version... with Firmware 2.0 it's 04.05.04_G... so your iPhone can't find your carrier...
I had this problem too and searched for some solutions. A lot didn't work, but then I found the programm "Ziphone Patched" wich delete the baseband version 04.05.04_G. Then you just have to restore to version 1.1.4 and unlock your iPhone again, then you'll have the old version of 04.04.05_G and your carrier will be found.

Ziphone patched didn't work for me, I had to use iDemocracy 3's "refurbish" function. Then it was still not working, so I installed bootneuter and I turned my 3.9 BL into a 4.6 neutered unlocked and at this point it worked - but I didn't see it in any tutorial on the net.

i too fell into the iclarified trap. Problem is, it doesn't work for everyone, and it claims it does. Tried finding bootneuter, but by then I'd put so many hours into it I was too burned out to keep screwing with it.

It also works with Baseband 04.03.13_G which you will have after using Ziphone Patched. For me was no need to restore it again to version 1.1.4.

Guys honestly you can't make this app perfect. No amount of testing will make it so no phones will be bricked. In the word of jurassic park 'life finds a way' sadly. If the app is completely operational then fix this last bug and then let go. There will always be other bugs that will pop up but those can be fixed with software updates. Its sounds to me like the app is pretty much done. Just release it.

You know it's funny. I sent a message to Gizmodo about this very scenario where they announced that iPhone 3G was unlocked. What happens if it's not legimately ready or working? They were litterally reporting a video. It was poor journalism on their part, but it's hard to argue that the iPhone dev team didn't play a role in that as well.

I couldn't agree more. working for IT companies for approx. 20 years as a sales rep, I wish all people involved with development, PM, etc... would think this way. Knowing that these guys put in all their efforts to make sure all of us don't get in a lot of trouble upgrading to 2.0 is great.

You tell me that 99% of the users are not going going to be original

Except it's a chance of a brick, not a guarantee, and even then it's probably a slim chance. I bet you this app is already safer to use then the soft update for 1.1.2, or ziphone, or the original unlock. All of those did the job.

I though this was the best update yet. For once giving some kind of breakdown of what is completed and what is left to be done. Why is this good? Well it at least allows us to make our own estimates of when it will be released, and then I only have myself to insult when that release date is missed ;)

Do me a favor - go pick up a book on any programming language you want...I'll even recommend a simple one for you to learn - Python. Read it, start programming, and then maybe you will understand the amount of work that goes into a program like this. And then maybe you'll understand why it's been delayed - FOR YOUR BENEFIT.

A recent business lecturer said this to us:

"Software development time frames... they're a bugger. Do you take lines of code required, divide by the number of people and multiply by a factor time for each line? No becuase you don't know how much code there will be.

Do you use an iterration derived from previous project and multiply by a scale factor which changes dependent on the job? ie 1.0 for a job of equal size, and less than one for a smaller project and vise verse for a large on. No because you can't predict system bug and banl on all project being "roughly the same"

So what do you do? You have a guess, ask your boss to double check that guess, then add 50% and then put in the contract that you're not liable for any loss of profit if the code isn't ready on time. "

Do you see a contract between us and the dev team? Any of you whingers, if you can find a contract between the dev team and any one saying when, how and where they will release this software then maybe you will have the right to moan.

For anything to stand up under fire both sides have to show consideration, that is they loss time making code for us and we loose money (to them) for them making that code. We are showing no legal consideration for their time, so they could stop coding now, keep what they have done to themselves and carry on with their lives.

It's been 6 days people, if in those 6 days half of the dev teams kids/mums had birthdays i would fully hope they had spent time with them rather than making this code (which is their hobby) for us. Because right now we (becuase of a self 40%) look like spoily, self fish and obtuse children.

If they release it and it bricks your phone you will be madder than you can imagine and you know it

I'm sorry but that's BS. All coders know how much time it's going to take to do something. That's why we do it. If it was a complete unknown then the DevTeam should not be posting "fasten your seat-belts". The updates as to what are going on are great. They are all working really hard and I am happy for them. But to suggest they have no idea when they will be finished is BS. They knew before the 3G came out it would take about 3 weeks to get it sorted.

It's great they are making a fool proof app for those people who just want a click and drag unlock solution and also are doing this to protect their code from Apple and the likes.

But. They are really wasting everyone's time with this messing around. They made it sound like they were releasing it within minutes the first day, then hours, and know days.

Why they refuse to give a timeframe is beyond me. But if they manage to get it out before August I will be impressed. So undo your seatbelt. Get off the plane. It's time to book another flight.

No you will be able to use our iphone, except not in the way it was intended to be.
The Phone ability won't work because the iPhone is still simlocked..
But because the software does activate and jailbreak the iphone, you will be able to use it as a fancy iPod and Wifi accessoire :).
At least until the Dev-Team posts the update that will indeed unlock your simlock, and thus the call sms function.

Actually, t-mobile uses a non-standard 1700Mhz for their 3G, and since the 3G iPhone is using the 1900Mhz, you won't be able to use t-mobile at all (at least in the states). I too am a t-mobile user, however i won't be getting rid of my first gen iPhone until my contract is up in Feb.

It's my understanding that ATT's 3G is actually on the non-standard frequency. T-mobile is using the same frequency used in other countries.

Why the sad face? If you have a computer with the proper specs that OSX86 releases support then Leopard runs like a charm on normal hardware. Only major problems I've had are some mouse glitches when enabling Quartz Extreme and a minor USB problem, which I caused in the first place, and fixed. Besides. Who wouldn't want to dual boot that and Ubuntu through GRUB? :-)

I do that! It's a WinXP, Leopard, Ubuntu boot. With windows on the bottom. My problem was only wifi and some graphic artifacts. ...if all else fails though, i have an iMac G5, two G4s (parents'), and a classic iMac G3.

whenever i get into arguments about mac vs windows, someone always brings up how macs can run windows better than pcs can. although it's not true, quoting how great xp is on macs in a mac vs windows debate really puts some holes in your logic.

No it doesn't it's just showing that macs are better or comparable to everything else out there. I don't know of one person that uses windows on his mac as the prime OS, but the fact that it can run it just as well and even parallel with the mac os in no way puts holes in the argument that macs are great. Anyone who thinks that hasn't thought their arguments through well enough or they are simply mental.
I will say that if you do nothing but game it would probably be cheaper to build a PC. but if you plan on doing anything else (for longer than a couple of years) a mac just makes sense

Lets not turn this into a Mac vs Windows debate. It's your own choice what you use. I still have Windows Vista on my Mac because, lets face it, OS X sucks for playing games. That said, for general everyday computer use I would place Leopard far above XP and even further above Vista. I was recently stuck with using a Windows XP machine for a few days and it just got so frustrating. BUT, other people would feel the same way if they were stuck with a Mac for a few days, which brings me back round to "it's your choice what you use".

One thing to remember is that you can run both on a Mac, so you're never left out in the cold when a piece of software that is vital to you is released on the other platform. And with Macs gaining market share quite rapidly (number 3 computer manufacturer in the US at the moment) that could start to become a problem for windows users.

Back in the days when I used Safari I decided to bind the unfunctional F5 key to revealing the desktop and just settled for using cmd+R, so I had no idea Firefox let you use it to refresh. Very nice, also good there is no unlocking because i don't want to lose warranty on my phone and be able to restore it to the new out of the box condition when i need to. I get free unlocking from my service provider after 1 year, that probably doesn't work when my phone is unlocked in a non-official way.

I updated my 3g phone from 5A345 to 5A347 with itunes restore, I don't hope that will be a problem.

Safety first, please take ALL time needed to test this. Thank you for all the hard work.

As one of those so-called "overpaid PMs" who wishes he was overpaid, I can appreciate how clear and concise your update / roadmap is. This tells people what to expect in the upcoming release, what to expect in the future, and what you are working on.

I also appreciate the fact that you want to eliminate all P1 bugs and hopefully P2 bugs to reduce the support requirements. Tony - Why do you want a 3G phone for Tmobile? you wont be able to use 3G as right now they do not have a 3G network in the states. They go live with 3G later this year but it will not support the Iphone as it is on a different frequency. Just my 2cents.

There should be no reason you cant, asuming it works in the same general way Pwnage 1.0 did. However, you will have to find your own place to host the ipsw of course. However, I think it would be a good idea for someone to create a site with the most common ipsw's and some more specific ones.

However, as shown in the video this last weekend, when you selected the firmware that the phone currently had, it only showed 1.1.4 and 2.0, so folks like me and De Rijk have to be concerned with taking the proper steps. All firmware could simply be 1st gen iphone 114/20, ipod touch, and 3G.. I never upgraded with pwnage 1.0 because it is a mac tool, not windows - i'll be borrowing my neighbors mac when 2.0 is released (hopefully by Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning).

as of now, there's no UNLOCKING for the iPhone 3G .... that means you can't use it with any other operator than the one you bought it with .. they are no't even sure if it's going to be possible to unlock it .. just read it .. About the windows version .. I'm 100% sure there won't be one soon ... or at least, the first release is going to be mac only ... since they have NEVER mentioned the word Windows here and there's not one single screenshot of a windows port.

For me is the Jailbreak more important then the Unlock, because i like to install Software to make my 3G usable.
Sad is, this Tool will only work on a MAC :-(

That is where you the user of free software take the risk. Are you willing to risk seeing an update show up in iTunes, then install it breaking your current jailbreak?

Do you want to go above and beyond your iPhone or just take what Apple gives you? It is up to you.

You could be like me, cleaning your desk off one evening when 1.1.3 was released while charging your phone on your computer. You then look up and see "Updating iPhone software" and say "Shit", the papers on the keyboard pressed enter for you allowing your 1.1.2 jailbreak to be upgraded to Apple 1.1.3

Thanks to the Dev Team, i was able to jailbreak again a couple of days later.

What are you guys complaining about? 3g Unlocking was never shown to exist, only JAILBROKEN 3G which are two totally separate things. They are working very hard on this and if you can't stand to have an AT&T phone, you shoulda kept the old one and gotten yourself an iPod touch... This is just a guess – but I'm assuming the jailbreak is done after you upgrade to 2.0 using iTunes – then they wouldn't have to worry about 1.1.2, 1.1.3, or 1.1.4 variations that people have.

Hey dude.

Activated means your phone is accesible, i.e you are not prompted to plug it into itunes to activate it, and you can use the programs that are on it (but you will not be able to make calls)
Jailbroken means you can install different software on it
Unlock means it can be used with any sim, unfortunately there is no solution for the 3G iphones.

i remember when i used to write small lil programs back in the days for AOL servers serving mail and some account phishing hacks and 1 time i broke in the AOL MERLIN server with all the account info and admin un and pw. well those small lil programs tolk me weeks or months to make and it was simple codes this is fucken huge u have to understand codes to understand the time put on programs

Quick questions, I might not be the only one with this problem... but I was one of the fools that clicked the update button, actually did realize what I did after a few seconds but it was too late...

But now it seems that I'm stuck in betwen 1.1.4 and 2.0... I can't restore to 1.1.4 neither to 2.0... the strange thing is that I can't even go to 2.0 even if my baseband is of that version...

Well don't know, using a spare nokia atm... really missing my iphone (pay for my foolishness I guess...) and hope when it gets released I can get hold of a mac and get it operative again, or just wait longer for the windows version...

Hope someone can reply to my post giving me an explanation of my situation...

It's fantastic that you spend your freetime to develope such a cool tool for all of us... and that for absolutly free!

I hope you keep on feeding us with your progress reports. Or even better... that you're finished VERY VERY SOON (perhaps today or tomorrow^^) and just release it =)

What i would like to know is... will there be a Windows Vista / XP version of pwnage 2.0 available right from release? Or will i have to find someone that has a Mac... to use pwnage 2.0 ?

I really hope there'll be a Vista/XP Version right from the release. If not... i could totally understand it... sound's logical if you first concentrate in one version and afterwards convert it for Windows...

But if there will be "only" a Mac version at release... please tell us before... than i can try to solve the "problem" that i only own a PC before XD =P

man! correct me if I'm wrong, but the dev team never made a windows-version. The only link to the winpwn-project is, that the dev-team "allows" them to use there knowledge to implement it in an windows-app.

So the windows-version will be ready when those winpwn-folks are ready.

If by "most of the people" you are referring to people that have bought an iPhone 3G, the you are in error. Most of us them are Mac users (just as was the case when the original iPhone went on sale), in fact over 60% according to Piper Jaffray (see e.g. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/07/14/a... ).

i cannot answer you for a fact, but if you look historically, the dev team has only released mac software, then the windows stuff is ported over later.

so to be safe, dont bet on a pc version right away. but as i said, i cant guarantee that, its just what i know from the past releases.

mac prick here, too, but I'm still going to answer you. the pwnage tool is mac only. i'm sure xpwn will follow shortly thereafter, and then a windows and linux tool could follow. your language, btw., probably doesn't make any dev-team members want to answer you directly.

btw.: you have two options: jailbreak/unlock on a friend's mac, or get past that stupid wall of mac-hatred and try some osx86-stuff. actually, you have a third option: get a real mac and become one of the people you call cocky smart pricks as well as fags.

I have a legitimate use... I don't want AT&T to see that I am using an iPhone on my Legacy AT&T (Before Cingular) plan. I've been using my iPhone with the IMEI of a Nokia 6820 for a while now and it works great. Plus I'm using the IMEI from a phone I own not using someone else's IMEI or anything like that.. :(

Does to 2.0 update also update the bootloader to a current version? If not, will Pwnage Tool 2 resolve this issue?

OK EVERYOBODY, I NEED A LOT OF HELP
i use to have a 1.1.4 iphone, pwned and all the stuff(unlocked, jailbroken, and activated) workin excellent... Then, in my curiosity i installed the Beta 8, 5a345... after that the new firmware did not accept my sim, well i spected that, then i comitted the worst error possible, in iLiberty I selected to put my iphone in DFU mode, but my iphone went into the new recovery mode screen(which have the cable and the new itunes logo), then i said OK, lets downgrade this, but it is Imposible... i've tried firmware 5a347, 5a345, 1.1.4, 1.1.3, in DFU mode and in normal recovery mode, Im pretty sure i can solve this issue if i can get my iphone(5a345) out of the recovery mode screen, does anyone think the new PWNAGE TOOL, will be able to do this, or anybody has a faster solution than waitin... Really hope somebody can help me out

Head on over to www.hackthatphone.com, this guy provides repair services, he fixed my phone back when i upgraded to 1.1.3, I fudged it all up. He had it fixed the day he received it, back in the mail, and I was without my precious iPhone for only 3 days... if he can't fix it, no-one can.

I Have 2 iphones
1) 3.9BL J+A+U with anysim (from 1.1.1-->1.1.2--->1.1.3 ) dev team method
2)4.6BL J+A+U with pwnage tool (originally 1.1.4 OOB)
My question is:
When the pwnage 2.0 is released how should i procced?
with iphone 1 i intend to the following:
1)restore with standard 2.0 firmware
2)use iPwner (since the unlock was done with anysim)
3)use psw builder to create a custom 2.0 firmware
4) use itunes restore the phone again using the custom firmware

with iphone 2
1)restore to 2.0
2)use IPSW bulider to make yet ANOTHER custom firmware
3)restore once again using the NEW custom firmware

is this correct?
Can i use the SAME CUSTOM FIRMWARE ON BOTTH PHONES?
Do i have to use ipwner again on the iphone that's currently unlocked with pwnage tool? or i can go directly to the ipsw builder?

I think this are questions that will pop like crazy when the tool is released and would be nice to know what to do before the release

iphonedev, when you say the new Pwnage Tool will support 3rd party apps [on 2.0], do you mean just apps compiled for 2.0 or that and older ones on Installer/Cydia? Seeing as you have Installer on there, I suppose the apps on Installer will work with 2.0, too?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but...

I purchased a 3G iPhone with the hope that the fine work of the Dev Team would at a point in the future would find a way to provide a Jailbreak (yes I have enough faith in opensource, homebrew, and hacking communities to pay $300 for equipment that hasn't been hacked yet) being involved in these communities I know first hand that with enough time most anything can be accomplished in one way or another ( plus with recent news about what is going on with Google and their SDK I'm worried that iPhone has become a better choice for what I plan to use it for than ANDROID).

Anyway my question is once I have My 3G jailbroken will I be able to use the existing commandline and tools that have been written to use this software? And if in fact I will, does anone know if a compiler is part of this package, and will I beable to compile code directly on the iPhone? Or can someone provide quick dierections to where I can research this info?

Thanks for any info, and thanks to the Dev Team for their upcoming contribution to the software community.

AFAIK the tool will include the Cydia installer as part of the jailbreak (from the text thats what the bug they're fixing is related too), which itself installs a BSD-like subsystem and support for terminal & ssh etc. One of the vids shows a 3g using ssh so looks good to me. Not sure if we'll get access to that funky iBoot shell though, or what I'd do with it if I did...

Well... I can't explain how happy I am because you people from DevTeam have that attitude and dont want to hurry with relasing untested tool... I wish that all people do job JUST like you... DONT HURRY with relasing unlocking tool... relase it ONLY if you are sure that your work is done and if you are sure that it wil NOT BRICK our iPhones...

There will allways be IDIOTS (sorry for that strong word) who wants to get unlock tool over night but don't worry... there are a lot of people who respect your work!

I bought iPhone 3G and it sits on my desk waiting for unlock tool and I am inpatient. But I prefer 100% sure tool that will not birick my iPhone and I DONT spitting on Dev Team.... I just sit... and wait... all others who dont have word of support for Dev Team should shut up!

so can i still run apple store apps and use the gps without apple fuckin me in the ass if i install 3rd party apps… is this like the wii wad installer where it doesnt screw with the system.. it only installs apps (cuz thats all i want... that and apple store apps)

iGuarantee (lol pun) they are gonna need mirror servers, they are gonna be RUSHED with requests. They should post a new update asking for voluntary mirrors, I dont have the best connection (300kpbs/sec up) but I have 2 servers, linux and a windows 2003, that I would be willing to contribute as a mirror until they too are overloaded and brought down :).

I will say this, all this delay on the pwnage program has kept me very excited, The anticipation is killing me, but its better than the apathy 99% of pwnage users will feel within a week of its release, once they can use their iphones again I predict a period of a week of downloading and trying new features, after which it becomes the same phone we have known to love, only this time with new games and a sideways calculator. I have one question though, I have noticed many of the posts are at night, and you havew mentioned that you all work as programers, what time do you guys work on this, in other words, is there a 9-5 where i dont have to sneak out of class to check your page?

Hi everybody, quick question:

is there a problem/risk upgrading from a 1st Gen iPhone with 1.1.4 and 3.9FB (I used iLIberty) to the 2.0 Firmware ???
Or would it be better to use Bootneuter and "upgrade" from 3.9FB to 4.6 before making the 2.0 upgrade?

I stupidly loaded 2.0 and now its bricked. Tried for about 2 days to downgrade to 1.1.4 using all tips from iclarified, yours and others but to no success.
Can you please tell me if you are going to release pwnage 2.0 in a dad or 2 or not? I agree this happened 'cause of my own impulsiveness but I need my iphone to work. I am using a free crappy phone, instead.
If at all possible can u just release SIM unlock for 1st gen iphones? So silly guys like me can get iphones "unbricked"

I have been reading on about the phone lately, and I see that the iPhone Devteam has been able to unlock it. However, what I am concerned about is when they finally release this tool, I will be able to use it on T-Mobile correct? But if T-Mobile doesn't have the same frequency for 3G as AT&T does that mean it will be totally inoperable? Or I just won't be able to use 3G, but still the phone?

I am an admitted ignorant person with a 1.1.4 firmware unlocked iphone waiting (with everyone else) with gratitude (like MOST people), and i am new to this stuff. I have a question, is this new tool gong to be able to unlock the new 2.0 software that Apple put out? So I will be able to use my mobile me push and all that good stuff? Like I said, I have the FIRST generation iPhone, not the 3g, and I have a mac. I actually downloaded the new itunes 7.7 to my imac but did NOT connect my phone to it and did not upgrade my phone to 2.0. I have been doing that through my MBP which I have not downloaded the new itunes yet, thank God.

I guess that is good, being that PC users will have to wait (a tiny bit) more. As stated above, I am not really "hip" on code and all that, just want to know that this is what I am waiting for.

And to that ungrateful, angry, impatient, person who wrote that tag about "This has gone beyond a joke" ; Do you know the meaning of "HUMILITY" ? It seems as though you were raised as a "poor little rich child" but GROW UP!!

Unlocking WILL happen by these guys. They can't help themselves. Why? Because it's there.

On the other hand, it is difficult. Very difficult. The Apple team anticiapated these guys, and surely made the bootloader unbreakable...by anyone, even guys as smart as these. Nevermind, I don't guess it can be done, I mean, who could be smarter than the entire Apple team? I don't think there is any team smarter than the Apple team. They gotta be the best of the best.

GET A GRIP !!! dev-team does not owe anyone anything ! dev-team have another life besides helping out other people that can't help themselves; they owe you *** nothing *** so why do you whiners keep complaining.. Don't you guys have nothing better to do of your days than spending time to come over this website, banging your complaints on your keyboard and what else ? Basically you want to screw (whatever the reason, money or ideology )your carrier / Apple and complaining that you can do it by yourself and your help (that you're not paying a fscking dime for !) is not doing it fast enough for you ? oh please....

I'm a developper; I know next to nothing on the iphone platform and sdk. I do know that the risks of mishaps are enormous. These guys are cautious, and, based on previous work, very, very, very efficient and profesionals.

Come on folks, give them some breathing room. They deserve it.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge here - you guys are the experts, not me! I have a 1st gen iPhone. It runs software v1.1.2, unlocked not on contract. I wish to upgrade to software v2.0. What is the best way to do this? I know that on this site: http://www.iphoneunlockuk.com/ they claim that their software will upgrade 1.1.2 to 2.0 keeping all apps, settings, emails, SMS'es, etc. Will the new Pwnage tool achieve this for me? If not, suggestions would be most welcome and highly appreciated.

the best way to do that is to do a backup through iTunes. Then once you jailbreak, as long as your backup is intact you will be able to sync back from that.

I got a question... I understand the 2.0 version will not unlock 3G, but is it doable in a foreseeable day?
I am not a computer expert, but I read Apple did an advance decoding thing of some sort... so it made the unlocking very hard. I hope you guys will not give up on unlocking it. I am pretty sure there are many people out there waiting for an unlock.

I'm not in any way associated with any effort in unlocking the 3G iPhone, so take what I say with a pinch of salt, but......

The iPhone is available unlocked in a few countries already (Belgium for one). Assuming it is the same hardware, I can't imagine it being impossible to alter an American 3G iPhone's firmware, bootloader, baseband (or whatever) to be the same as a Belgian iPhone. This is all speculation, but I remain hopeful.

Here's an hypothesis for the continued delay in releasing the tool :

1) Apple has updated the 2.0 firmware to 5B101 / 5B103
2) This update is currently not available for direct download to the average consumer
3) IPhone Dev team may have got hold of this version through their own sources but if they release the updated Pwnage Tool based on the new build, it will be of no use to us until Apple makes the new firmware available to everybody through iTunes / direct links. So the Team is waiting for Apple to officially release the new build.
4) Apple on the other hand is waiting for iPhoneDev to release their Tool ( perhaps based on the 5B build) so that they can then perhaps come up with an entirely new build - say 5C - to thwart the Pwnage Tool.

Its a cat and mouse game folks and each side is waiting to see who blinks first.

Would it be possible to find a copy of 1.1.4 and restore a 1st gen iphone from 2.0? I know you can choose which file to restore from in iTunes by holding down the option key when clicking on the restore button. My son surprised me and updated my iphone to 2.0 and now I can't jailbreak it to sell on ebay.

if you only jailbreak your software, your baseband doesn't get modified. i think this is the case. with the older versions of the software, there is an option to not unlock your phone.

if your phone is already unlocked, it should stay that way. only those with locked 3g phones will not get unlocked.

First off, let me thank you for the amount of work that you have put in to this application already. I'm sure when (if) it is released it is going to be well designed and very capable of taking up the tasks it is designed for.

NOW before that I post this i've added this line in because what comes below sounds like an attack. Its really not. It's coming from someone who manages and produces IT projects for a living. Consider it more.. friendly.. advice.

Now let me highlight a problem here, which is of no fault of your programming, but more of the project itself (but then again its no one in particulars fault, its just a general problem). The problem is that if the program requires re-designing every single time apple patches the firmware, then you've got a quantity and money issue here. Apple is always going to be infront because they've got the numbers both in HR and in money to throw at it.

We need to take risks here, and we need to take baby steps instead of leaping and constantly falling short of the buck.

I would definitley pay upto 30$ for this program, although it seems like the best hackers are working on it and want to give it for free, so they are taking their own sweet time and testing our patience, the other guys who want to make money, are free loaders and letting these geniuses do all the work and then use it to create their own program and sell it to the "not so inclined" computer users!! you're probably gonna have to dl the 2.0 update sooner or later from itunes. what i did is download the ipsw file from apple so when the pwnage tool gets released, i can just patch it right away. the update file is about 225MB in space.

Whatever is being done by DEV TEAM is hugely appreciated. If it wasn't for you guys, I would have never bought the iPhone in the first place. I second many of the comments here, I do not mind waiting, if that is necessary to ensure the resulting tool is as bug free as possible.

The feature I would find most important, is the ability to restore the phone or iPod back to Apple factory condition if anything goes wrong during the Pwnage.

BTW: will there be an option to downgrade the 2G iPhone to 1.1.4 if necessary? I presume if we can Pwnage any firmware package onto the iPhone we should be able do so.

I don't know how much it would help, but I would like to see stronger protection on the executable
to help prevent the sale of the application. Too many times have people replaced a few strings and graphics
and claimed such works as their own, selling them on Commercial Websites for as much as $150!

So I have a first gen iphone, and I want to upgrade to firmware 2.0. It's already unlocked and jailbroken, so I've been using it with no problem on Tmobile. I'm not going to upgrade to a new phone, as I'm fine with my web speeds (really). Hello, I have an Iphone 3G. I have downloaded The pwnage tool. I chose iphone 3g and then it said it was searching for a firmware bundle and then it found Iphone 1,2_2.0_5A347, is that the bundle i need for my iphone 3g 2.0 ??

i'm having a huge problem... i entered your icon (can't remember the name of it, but it's like the installer.app type) and i got busy at work, when i turned to look at the phone it only shows the top line (t-mobile, wifi signal, time and bluetooth connection), the rest of the screen is blank, but has the apple circle thing (like when searching or downloading) thing spinnig in the middle of the blank screen.... what can i do? i heard iPhone 2.0 has bugs... should i downgrade to 1.1.4??? please reply ASAP; i really need my phone. thanx. :-)

b: upgrade to FW 2.0 and then use pwnage????

no, i think it shows a fundamental decency on the part of the dev team that they don't want their product to fuck anyone's phone up, regardless of the fact that they offer no warranty with it. besides, it's about pride in your work, and seeing as the dev team actually have pride in their work, unlike Zibri, they wouldn't be proud of a flawed piece of software.

*sigh*. I just want to upgrade my 2G iPhone to 2,0. I really wish you would do what you're doing for the iPhone 3G ; release what you have for those who have a 2G iPhone and need to unlock and release an update for others LATER. I don't get what's so difficult about that or why this software cannot be released like every other software developer release...mention what bugs are in the release and let us decide if we want to take that risk or not, isn't that the whole point of this community? Our choice? There will always be bugs, or new bugs popping up because of unexpected environments and the jailbreaking part I couldn't care ANY less about... well maybe I'll miss the NES emulator, but I'd prefer what's in the App store regardless.

I really, really appreciate the work, time and effort each of you are putting into this project, but it just feels like a lot of stalling. Like I said before the majority (including people I know personally) really will only use this tool once, as long as it's unlocked with the new software... we'll probably never open this program again until the next software update from, which I hope won't be this tormenting. It's enough to make someone want to switch to AT&T.

And a release schedule?? Can we please have SOME kind of ETA, weeks, months? I'm tired of checking this site just to see if something was released. If it works, release a beta and let us test the bugs for you.

The use of the word shut up normally indicates no home training, Which I can only assumed you had none. I will continue to voice my opinion whether you like it or not, this is getting ridiculous, as a matter of fact I'd be willing to pay anyone right now if they can release an unlock tool. There are millions of people out there with the 1st gen iPhone who want to run firmware 2.0. We don't care about slight bugs like wifi dropout and apps not working 100% perfectly. Imagine if just before Apple released Leopard they came out and said, sorry guys but we've just found that wifi drops out occasionally, so we're going to delay the release till that's totally fixed.

This is the strangest software release I have ever seen, just release as a beta, list known problems and users will get back to you with bugs they have found, you never know we might find one you guys didn't since you can't produce every combination of scenarios with the limited number of iPhones you have. It's not bricking phones so please just release! We can test it for you and the whole thing will progress much much faster. As you said yourselves no bricks was the goal, and you've reached it!!!!!!

This is my first post and I have been waiting patiently for 7 days, but this is getting a little much. Don't say fasten your seatbelts if you're not going to start the ride! Just release today, please!

Most browsers support increasing the size of text. IE7, FireFox 3 (and 2), Safari and Webkit all offer making text bigger if you have difficulty reading small text. You can also disable styles in most browser if the white on black causes a problem.

IE7 > There is a zoom dropdownlist on the right of the status bar
FF > View > Zoom > Zoom In
Safari/WebKit > View > Make Text Bigger

No, you don't have to restore, pwnage tool will work great, they have been working to hard and not accepting donations (hint, hint, dev team) to release a product that wont work on all firmware.

I love dev team. I think they do a great job. This isn't even a complaint, its no rush. I don't care if it takes them another 2 weeks to release the tool. Take your time dev team.

But this is a joke. Every 15 hours they release another blog that tells the world they are closer so that we all salivate and check the website that much more often. Whoever was the MORON who said these guys are more professional than Apple is ridiculous. You need to learn what the word "Professional" means. Here we are with thousands of people on edge every day now for a full week waiting for something to be released! All you commenters blame the "impatient" other commenters and call them a skew of crass names. The impatient commenters are only impatient because Dev team is leaving posts on their blog which lead us all to believe that it is ABOUT to be released. But they never tell us when. The keep using the word SOON as if we all understand what that means.

The whole community of "jailbreak/unlock" is a dramatic bunch of headcases. Look at geohot... a sellout erin brockovich, a prima-dona CHILD who says "i might just have to release yiphone" HA! and thinks he's going to rule the world. Or Zibri... an emo "IT'S OPEN SOURCE" exploit thief who slits his wrists so he can follow his 15 year old girlfriend into the dark who said "I'm more interested in google android and more open softwares/firmwares"

This isn't professional and it isn't polite. I am a major fan of Dev team. I am very grateful for their work. And I have used Pwnage tool to unlock MANY MANY iPhones. I am one who is more than willing to PAY, and more than willing to WAIT. But even the most dedicated fan can see when someone is being rude. This blog is harsh. Apple announces the 3G and then makes us all wait a MONTH! were we pissed? You know it! But were we patient? of course! Why? Because they gave us a schedule the day they released it. Can you imagine if they had said... it will be released "SOON"? The lines outside the apple store wouldn't have known when to be there and they would have started forming that night... or the next day. Dev team. STOP USING THE WORD SOON AS IF IT IS GOOD COMMUNICATION. To be frank. With power comes responsibility. If you haven't noticed dev team has a lot of power and influence on many people. They need to take this responsibility more seriously and act like professional adult STOP ACTING LIKE prima-dona bloggers wanting people to come back to their website OVER AND OVER AND OVER so they can see how high they can get the hitcounter to go.

bought my iphone unlocked and activated. only had to put in my sim. no i downloaded "baseband info" and it says the following:

Model: iPhone 1,1
Modem Firmware: 04.04.05_G
Bootloader Version: 3.9_M3S2

Do i have to upgrade Baseband to 4.6 before using the new Pwnagetool (when it is released^^)?


Another more general question: as i said i never unlocked an iphone before. do i have to connect my unlocked 1.1.4-iphone 2G to itunes and install firmware 2.0 and the use the new pwnagetool?

I think not, Apple doesn't upgrade the bootloader during updates because it's not a safe procedure, the software should work regardless of the bootloader anyway.

Exactly what I've been thinking. Just a few more thoughts: The Dev Team could offer registration for email notifications or a RSS feed dedicated only to the actual release. That would be great, but there would of course would be less traffic on this blog and less time wasted by readers and commenters. I like free software as everyone else, but if this was paid, I guess that it would make the Dev Team behave more professionally in this regard.

That said I am grateful for your work and I appreciate that you want to finish it properly and release it as bugfree as possible.

So what about XPwn? I would wager that the majority of iphone/touch users don't own a mac. So it seems to me like finishing the new version of xpwn should take priority (why not just make mac pwnage a frontend for xpwn?), as it can be used by everyone (including mac users). If you only release a mac compatible pwnage, what will happen is a LOT of people will end up torrenting pre-pwned firmware packages, many of which will be mislabeled or otherwise compromised. The consequence: bricks, errors, or at the very least lots of complaining directed unfairly at you.

Yes, they do. Developing XPwn is more work than developing Pwnage for Mac. The libraries are cross-platform, but developing those libraries requires specific work--and lots more time.

I don't know much about programing but if the original iphone and ipod touch portions of the code are working perfectly then can't the 3G portions be released as a update when they are perfected. It just seems silly to make everyone wait for something that will only be applicable for a minority of its users. I have no complaints about having to wait for something free regardless.

And if you want a date, set one yourself. One that is sure to have seen the actual release. If you read this forum you should have a fairly good estimate. Set the date and then don't read until that date comes. Quality, like the team seems to head for, takes time and as a project manager I would hate a team to rush that part of the deliverable.

Seeking beta testers? I was given a bricked 1.1.2 iPhone a while back and spent a few hours online finding out how to de-brick it. It now basically serves me as an awesome iPod Touch with a camera. I'm super anxious to try out the App Store (as is everyone else) and Exchange so I wouldn't mind being a guinea pig if you want to throw something this way.

Either way though, I feel bad for you guys. I think it's apparent that people are buying large quantities of iPhone 3Gs and selling them unlocked on ebay. That's why they're so pissed.

Wow bro calm your ass down, it's not that easy to code. You want them to give you updates at 2am?
If the release schedule hasn't been released yet, then that means it won't be released tomorrow either most likely.
My guess is Sunday.

For people who bought their phone just for Jailbreaking it or Unlocking it, it was quite stupid to do.
As for one, all the apps have to be recoded for 2.0. They won't be compatible with 2.0.

For those of you who need it unlocked now, that will probably take another week. And If I Were you i'd wait a few days after release to see if any bugs were active.

This is just ridiculous. You are never going to get all the bugs out of the thing! The app works 99.99 percent of the time. Right? Let it go. No app is perfect and at this point I think you guys are treating this thing like Adrian Monk would.

I agree with some of the comments. Your not going to provide technical support for the people who brick their phones and trust me, like i've said a million times, some people will brick their phones no matter what. No amount of crazy testing will stop that.

Look i'm trying my best to put no hate into my comments. You guys don't deserve any of it. You work hard. All I really am asking you guys to do is take a step back and look at the program. There is a point where the app is in a good enough condition to release and my only worry is that you guys are so deep into the nitty gritty of the program that you might not see that it may be good enough to release. In the end you guys are still the judge. Just take a step back. Think to yourself, is this app good enough that 99% of its users wont have any issues with it? If the answer to that question is yes then I think the app is done.

Alright, you've said this enough now. We are mostly developers, and we know how to work things. No, we aren't trying to make it 100% perfect, we're trying to save ourselves potential serious problems in the future. We know perfectly well that bug-free software is close to impossible, and it's insulting to have you keep implying that we somehow aren't aware of it. We've made good shit in the past, and have a decent reputation for no bullshit. Can't people just trust our judgement? If it were ready for release, it'd be released by now, but there's a couple of serious issues that need work, and that's what we're doing.

The fact that the Dev Team is this close to Jailbreaking the 2.0 Firmware after 6 days of it (and the 3G model) being publicly released is incredible. It took over a month to crack 1.0.0 for JB, and I was impressed that it was such a short period of time then.

I don't blame them for wanting to do quality checks on their program, true, nothing it ever 100% perfect, but if they want to spend another 2 weeks to get it to 99.99% perfect then fine. It's their baby, their project.

As I stated earlier, my concern is testing between firmware 5A345/5A347, and 5B101/5B103. iphonedev: are these firmware differences causing any issues?

1) this is a turbosim method, so it requires hardware, which is generally considered more cumbersome than the software unlocks we release
2) they charge for it
3) it doesn't quite work yet: one of our members speaks portuguese, tried calling them and they said it wasn't ready
4) it has nothing to do with what we're doing right now, which is a jailbreak, not an unlock

Seeking beta testers? I was given a bricked 1.1.2 iPhone a while back and spent a few hours online finding out how to de-brick it. It now basically serves me as an awesome iPod Touch with a camera. I'm super anxious to try out the App Store (as is everyone else) and Exchange so I wouldn't mind being a guinea pig if you want to throw something this way.

Either way though, I feel bad for you guys. I think it's apparent that people are buying large quantities of iPhone 3Gs and selling them unlocked on ebay. That's why they're so pissed.

I dont know if you ever considered doing a poll, but i bet the biggest innovation now that people want is the Unlock (which requires the jailbreak to get bootneuter on it). 3rd party apps are a big thing, and these are the show stoppers I am glad you are going after to save us the trouble.

that's nonsense. Cydia is an amazing achievement by Saurik, offering a *fully functional* set of UNIX utilities, unlike the broken 'BSD Subsystem' offered by nullriver. Furthermore, it's completely open-source, and because it's based on the Debian APT package-management system, is thoroughly documented, tried, and tested. Besides, with the launch of the appstore, I sincerely doubt nullriver will maintain installer anymore (not that they did much before anyway). My vote is to kill Installer stone-dead by never including it, and to stick with Cydia, which is more reliable, more logical and safer.

Nothing against Cydia, just I get the impression the devteam are trying to do too much at once. Small bugs can be dealt with by software updates, eg Apple. I have used five or six unlock programs so far, no real problems - why try to solve everything at once? Its impossible. PS Hope your meteor patch is available on the pwnagetool thing

Anybody who has been through serious trouble with unlocking will appreciate the work they are doing tro try to ensure as stable a release as possible. Thanks for the great work! I hope I am representative of the silent majority who appreciates your effort and dedication to releasing a quality product. Many of us (especially those in software development) realize that small issues and slightly different configurations can lead to many problems in a release. No one wants a broken phone - and we can all guess who will be yelling loudest if it happens to them.

Thanks also to continuing to keep us updated despite some of the rude comments here. The professionalism is appreciated.

The fact that many people have bought expensive 3G phones or tried to upgrade just based on the anticipation of your software should be taken as a huge compliment. Their issues with respect and communication are their problem not yours.

I am also curious as to the backgrounds you guys have - perhaps you might share at some point in the future as an inspiration to some of us who admire your efforts.

It would appear that there are a lot of noobs amongst us here who do not know what they are talking about and have a lack of respect for the team.

It IS an if and when, the 3G iPhone uses a different baseband chip.
So when you learn to code and modify pre-existing code, come back and give me a call, until then, shut the fuck up and stop bitching.

Come on guys, quit moaning about time, it is done when it is done, the team are an amazing bunch of hackers and don't want to brick your devices.

And to the above poster, if people bought the 3G iPhone on the basis that they believed it would be unlockable, then that is there own fault isn't it?
Personally I would say that they are moronic and idiotic in their behavior to have rushed out and bought an expensive phone EXPECTING the team to unlock it for them and when the hack isn't ready they start slagging the team off, that isn't on, it's the consumer's own fault.
Don't take them for granted, this is just a hobby for them, they could stop this at any time, so don't ever talk ill of them.
This is not a definite subject and the state of affairs changes by the week with hacking, different exploits become available etc.

So just wait patiently.

So, if you have the older version with the new software you will still be able to unlock it so that you can put any sim card in? I am new to this, but that is what I have gathered.

Yes Giffroy - if you have the old iphone and upgraded to V2.0 , you will be able to put any sim card in once the dev team release their application.

Well, the Appstore may have some great apps you can install, but everything is checked out by Apple, so that if something they don't like the look of is submitted they don't have to approve it. I'm sure there are lots of little apps that are very useful that will just never make it to the Appstore because Apple don't approve of them.

That's BS - what necessary/good/senseful app could there possibly be that Apple wouldn't approve? Sure you want to use a BitTorrent client or something on your iPhone without being able to run it in background mode? It's been said before - it's pretty lame they "release"/announce things this way and then they come up with "oh, there won't be an unlock in this version btw".

Take saurik's video recorder. Works fine, makes nice videos, but it uses private APIs and thus cannot be sold on the App Store.

We never said there'd be a 3G unlock in this version. If you want a software unlock, you need to be able to run software on the device, so a jailbreak is necessary but certainly not sufficient to get an unlock. If we didn't release until we found an unlock the other 100 bajillion people would bitch at us for holding it up unnecessarily.

i knew it. no 3g unlock. those videos and earlier blog posts were very misleading. out the gate the devs should have said, there will be no 3g unlock.

im sure a lot of you guys went out and purchased a iphone 3g with the notion that it had been unlocked by the devs.

luckily those guys from brazil have a turbo sim that will be released soon.

In hindsight you guys weren't clear enough with that. I have no doubt it was not intentional. I just think you guys assumed that we understood (I do) that an unlock involves going into the very depths of the bootloader to find some form of an exploit that can be used to trick the phone into unlocking. This took months with 1.1.3/4 and there were many times that it was believed to be impossible. I doubt the situation has improved with the 3G bootloader.

Hiimcliff, it's a shame you were mislead. I doubt it was their intention. Until they do figure it out, yeah, a turbosim should take care of you.

i wasnt mislead because i was a skeptic from the very beginning. however, i do think the earlier posts like the one on july 11th with the updates on the success of their tool was very misleading to users. also the video with the flash gordon theme with the t-mobile signal. it all just wasnt very clear. and i'm very doubtful that it wasnt unintentional. they could have cleared it up from the first post on the 11th that there will be no 3g unlock. they chose not to do that.

i dont think the devs are bad people. (aside from telling me to fuck off.) i just think stardom has gotten the best of them, like it does to most people.

I think it has been very clear from the beginning that unlocking of the iPhone 3g would take longer and would not be available in the first release. I even told a friend to cancel his order of a 3g device until a weakness in the baseband would be found and exploited. This was on Friday the 11th.

By the number of people in here complaining about this and that I can't stop but wonder if modding of the iPhone has become just a little bit too mainstream.

those who read usually have the advantage. In no written statement from the Dev Team does it say there is an iPhone unlock for the 3G, but rather a jailbreak, which enables running their own software on it. In news and other blogs of various websites it may have been mentioned, so if you were mislead, then most likely not by the Dev Team.

hiimcliff, the DevTeam has every right to be exasperated with people like you. Anyone who buys a expensive device they can't use based on something they assume someone they don't know will do as a favor for them, deserves whatever they get. If you don't have patience, you pay the price.

Keep nagging the DevTeam. You're motivating them so much. All you people pining for a 3G unlock should consider they don't HAVE to release it. You know they can do it. Why not give them a reason other than your tiresome whining and complaining.

They never said they unlocked it. They showed the first jailbroken 3g phone which isn't the same.
In the interview on TUAW they also stated that the 3g won't be unlocked with pwnage yet!

Can someone answer my question about if the upcoming jailbreak will allow us to take the IPA files from the app store that have been floating around and ssh it into our ipods(The app store games and apps) or can it not be done because of the DRM making it work only for the original owner??

For the lamers that bought a 3G phone before an unlock was produced is stupid as you can get. Just to buy the 3G you have to sign up anyway so what will it give you anyway??

Great job dev team - really is amazing how you do all this work for your enjoyment. So, really don't let the lamerz get you down in anyway shape or form.
