Sure.

The Baseband processor checks what is in FLASH memory to see if it is digitally signed with Apple's key before it runs the radio code or loads the "Profile" from there. The radio code signed by Apple checks the Carrier is the same as what the Profile, also signed by Apple, requires.

This video shows that DevTeam is able to trick the Baseband processor into running their own code. It shows them running a bunch of things, including their own tool (not signed by Apple) showing the list of tasks the Nucleus OS which is what the Baseband runs. Much like a list of programs running on Darwin/Mac OS which runs on the iPhone's ARM processor (the one you actually interact with).

This means they "should" be able to figure out how to load code into the Baseband that doesn't check which Carrier the SIM card is for OR load a Profile that allows any SIM card. Either would be an "Unlock".

I like BoC, but this particular remix is pretty uninspiring. All they've done is taken the a cappella version of Trapped, slowed it down, and thrown a bassline and a breakbeat over top of it. So much more feeling put into the original song...

operator: "All they've done is...." ? That is the whole point. The remix is simple and minimal. I listened to (and loved) the original growing up and I've heard it remixed a hundred or so different ways as the a cappella was often used by various house DJs in live sets. BoC are from the same music scene that I enjoyed and was a part of, and lots of their tracks have trigger feelings of nostalgia, so for me very very inspiring. I love it.

To those that dont know what this video is about, this is what i've understood so far:
-You can now execute/install your own (not in appstore available) software on iPhon 3G
(in the video you see "iPhone 3G via SSH", but OpenSSH Server isn't available for iPhone
(yet?) it can only be installed by something like installer.app or so)

That has been available forever, the video shows how they are able to inject code in the baseband. The baseband is the chip that talks to, among other things, the phone carrier. So injecting stuff on the baseband can make it carrier agnostic, and thus giving us a full unlock (which is useful for instance, if you want to fly to another country and keep using your phone with a local sim provider, instead of roaming, something that should be allowed from the beginning, but that telcos suffer from).

Get ready, because the iPhone 3G unlock is coming to an iPhone 3G near you. The iPhone Dev Team have been able to break in the baseband processor. As you may remember from the first-generation iPhone unlock, this is big news because it means they have access to the core of the system, which gives them the ability to fully manipulate the iPhone 3G hardware and, therefore, unlock it. They gave us all the technical details and posted a demo of it in action:

This is a video of a custom application running on the iPhone 3G baseband, which is big news.

Nucleus is the operating system that runs on the PMB8878 baseband processor, we are using minicom running on the iPhone to talk to the basband via AT commands, the AT command shown is a custom AT command that has been inserted into the PMB8878 that starts an application on the baseband, one of the things that this application does is to lists the tasks (processes) that are running within Nucleus.

Now it's just a matter of time before they come with the unlock and, at last, total carrier independence on compatible 3G networks.

I was very unsure about the possibility of an unlock for a long time (keeping in mind, that the 3G was just released in July, of course)...I think I can sleep a lot better now... ;)

To all the iPod 2G owners I'd like to say: Be patient! Be grateful for the nice work, dev team has accomplished so far! Remeber: The time between the iPhone 3G release and the moment you watch this video is relatively short! Everytime I read your impatient comments I come to the conclusion, that you don't have the slightest idea, what it means to hack an electronic device...it's not like buying beer in the supermarket. Maybe you should start *using* the Internet and *learn* (yes, this has something to do with "reading" and *thinking* (as they call it...)

And always remember that dev team is doing it out of..em...fun...they are not here to your pleasure...if the result of their work is useful for you: congratulations! If not: congratulations! You have a nice iPod anyway, where you don't have to worry about things like cruel contracts and free carrier choice and the like. And btw: nobody told you to buy an iPod 2G right now (especially no one from dev team)...

And for christs sake: Show some respect! Or learn hacking by yourself and contribute to the issue with your knowledge and stop your discouraging behaviour!

So: Hold your fire and have a little faith in the dev team!

Sorry to tell you but that won't work... Telus runs on the CDMA network instead of GSM which the iPhone runs on. Your only choices in Canada are Fido or Rogers for GSM networks.

As far as I understand it, the reason why you can't transfer the method to the iPod 2G is, that you have different hardware in it. Therefore a different approach is needed. Different Processors with different Instructions. And you always have to look after suitable failures in the firmware, which are obviously not documented or even intended by Apple...

Or maybe...dev team hates the iPod 2G... ;)

right now i live in UK and there isn't problem to buy 3g iPhone(8gb) from 360 £ byt it's locked to O2.but in Czech republic they r selling iPhone 3g 16GB in Pay as Go for 340£ and what is the best thing Vodafon in Czech republic is selling iPhones unlocked for every carriers. :))

Belgium as well has unlocked version (obliged by law) so every sim card gives you the posibility to call even prepaid. The only thing left to do is jailbreaking...
Belgium price: 525 € for 8G and 620 € for 16 G or take a look at: www.ebay.be

i already bought iPhone without contract in Uk.it cost me 340 £ 8GB version. but it's locked just for O2 carrier.in Czech republic u can buy iPhone without contract form Vodafone and the best thing is that it'll be unlocked to all carriers :) price 16 GB iPhone 3G is (for me) unbelivible 340 £.

They're getting closer to the unlock, but this post is by no means related to the release of an unlock.
So far, they are "only" able to run unsigned (meaning not approved by Apple) on the baseband, which is a huge step toward the unlock.

I guess it is encrypted. Probably by the EMAI Number. So every iPhone is different.

It hasn't been unlocked yet. This update is from this past sunday.
If you're referring the old iphone, it took 4-5 months since its release until it was unlocked.

im planning to unlock my iphone once theyre able to do so..
so heres a question that i have
i have an iphone that i use in japan but i spend about half of my year in the US.
i want to unlock it to use in the US with a t-mobile prepaid card.
can i do this? does it matter that it is a japanese iphone or that the SIM is prepaid?

I'm posting this question here hoping someone will take pity on me and provide me with a simple answer to a simple question regarding (offically) unlocked iphones and the activation process. The chaos that Apple has created with all this locking/unlocking nonsense just boggles my mind. IF I buy, at a premium price, an officially unlocked phone (Russia, Hong Kong, etc., etc.), that phone must still be "activated" through iTunes with, of course, a legitimate SIM in it - from any provider. Ok. But what information does the ITunes monitor screen ask for in the process? And, MOST IMPORTANTLY, once activated with ANY legitimate SIM, is it "in the Apple database" forever more and never needs to be activated again? For example, IF I take out the SIM used in it during the (first) activation process, and insert another company's (legitimate) SIM, does the phone have to be activated through iTunes yet again? Or is the FIRST TIME activation of an officially unlocked iPhone the end of activation forever for this phone?

I travel a lot and have three non-US SIMs - Russian, and two German. This is why I ask. I am hoping that, with an unlocked phone, once it's been activated, I can swap out the (legitimate) SIMs whenever I want with no further problem.

Can anyone help me? Amazing that such simple information is so hard to come by. A "Genius Bar" guy at an Apple store had no idea....

Once you unlock the phone for any network, then you can legitimately use any carrier as long as the sim is gsm. The phone is activated through the phone not through the apple network. If you unlock the phone without the use of a sim then it is pretty much the same as an iTouch. If you were to restore the phone without using pwn then you would lose access to all other networks and have to use the pwn again to get back to your carrier service. Apple retains no information of the phone being activated unless activated through its network.

My understanding is that when your phone is officially unlocked (i.e. not through any software tool that'll be available to download from us) you will still need to activate via iTunes with any new SIM that's inserted. The activation will be painless but still require a PC which, I agree, is unfortunate.

Devices unlocked using a software unlock such as PwnageTool or QuickPwn in the future will however just allow any SIM to be inserted and used without configuration or activation.

You only activate it once and the questions are all related to your iTunes account if you have one or you need to create on. Its simple stuff like name, address ..
I live in Sweden and i had to provide a credit card number which is kind of strange but not a problem really :)

If you ever re-flash then you need to activate again. if you already have a iTunes account then its simple, you just login :)
Once activated you can use whatever sim card you like (if your phone is unlocked as you say!).

I live in Belgium, and we only have unlocked Iphones (by law) over here, I paid it 525 €, but no problems with other sim cards, all providers do work, from wherever in the world ( I introduced already: Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, US). Problem: the price of the Iphone, but if you let your company pay for it... ;-) Just ask you boss.. or just watch out: www.ebay.be

I understand that the iPod Touch 2g is behind the iPhone 3g, but once this get's entirely Unlocked, it's just a mater of time for the iPod Touch 2g.

Not really. The iPod touch 2G is a different animal.

I personally think jailbreaking it is more important than the iPhone 3G unlock. The next generation of iPhone will almost certainly be based on the iPod touch's new chip. Losing jailbreak would be MUCH worse than losing unlock. Jailbreak is what really unleashes the real power of these devices.

Verizon is a CDMA carrier and the Iphone is a GSM device. Therefore, the Iphone will not work with Verizon. Just like putting diesel into a gasoline engine. Its just wont work

never... or not on any of the current iphones, iphones run on the gsm network and verison does not making the networks non compatible, it would be like trying to run diesel fuel in your gasoline or electric car. Thus its not going to work.

This depends on the radio that Apple chose to include. There is the possibility - depending on the radio - of expanding the band to include T-Mobile 3G, and possibly even allowing CDMA/TDMA access. It just depends on how forward thinking that Apple was, and how far the community takes it.

Don't hold your breath - It would be VERY difficult, and will likely never happen even if the radio chip is capable.

Does this tool downgrade the baseband? I bought a 3G in high hopes only to read that you guys were working on the 1.45.0 baseband and mine has a 2.x.somethingorother. Am I screwed?

No, it doesn't.

There are ways to downgrade from certain baseband versions, but we haven't tested all versions and that's sort of a secondary issue right now.

Do the previous unlocks work with CredoMobile carrier? You know- I'm an immigrant-loving gay-rights-adoring pacifistic tolerant commie beatnik who believes in peace and freedom and happiness and liberty and all those gross and vile and ugly things that AT&T would never stand for. (Oogie-boogie-boooo...)

Anyway I've been looking forward to an unlock of 3g for that reason and have been trying to find older iphones with no luck (except for some available from scam artists who talk like they won't ship them anyway :( .).

Even if it won't work on CredoMobile carriers, I still love the iPhone hacks. I refuse though to use AT&T until I can jerk off to the phone sex that they tape and record- or Verizon for that matter.
