I thought it will be good to write a brief explanation for the people who use the PwnageTool for the first time like me :) Yes I did it and unlock works for me. I also checked the exchange support, youtube, appstore... All works fine.
I had a 2g iphone 1.1.4 that has been unlocked by ziphone software. I did it once and I used it till now without a problem. I was a little bit afraid to try pwnagetool 2.0 because of what zibri may have done to my iphone, but it worked great and it will work for you.
Here are the steps I took;
1. I upgraded to Itunes 7.7 2. Connected my iphone. It deteced the iphone and asked for an upgrade, I just cliked download only. This is how I got the original firmware form apple :)Then disconnected iphone just after the download started. 3. Before opening the pwnagetool I put my iphone in dfu mode. I tried at least 4 times to do that. The trick was to hold down the power and home botton wait until it restarts. Then pluck it into the dock wait for ten seconds during the apple logo and then release it . It is totally black but itunes recognized it as in recovery. This is the dfu we need. 4. I did not choose the expert mode. Chosed iphone 1g . It had found the restore firmware that itunes had already downloaded. Asked me for the bootloaders. I browsed both of them respectively and then it created the custom ipws. 5.Clicked next and it recognized the dfu but asked for shutdown. I had problem here before, It said that it can not put the device in dfu mode. This time it detected and asked for a shutdown. I just pressed both power and home button until it restarted. Then watch for the screen. It tells you when to release the power button and when to release home button. Then it was ok. My iphone was ready to be restored with the custom ipws. The tool gave a message everything ok and i must just close pwnagetool and use itunes.
6. I didn't do anything to iphone just left it where it was in dfu mode. Itunes had already gave the message that it needs to restore my iphone. I just said ok. The restore screen was in front of me. Just pressed alt button on the keyboard and while pressing it i clicked restore, and I showed itunes gently my custom ipws. It restored it successfully.
7. After that the phone rebooted, bootneutral was opened automatically , first it neutral the boot and then flashed the baseband. All was automatic. Then after the last reboot, there it was jailbroken and unlocked with all features working.
I hope you guys get lucky as I did.

Just have a look at the torrent's description, you'll see the tutorial. I haven't tested yet but seeing the tuto I think it works, that's why I spent time bringing the files on Demonoid and creating IPSW for win users.

Find your pwnage tool in your programs folder Klick with right mouse button and select " show package files" (or something like that) Then look for the file called logo.PNG. Open it in photoshop. Mak sure that you use the color profile of logo.png and not the one you use with photoshop!!!. Adjust the size and pictures and what you want. Make sure that before you save the file, that you flatten the image!!!
Then click save and you're done (make sure to backup the original logo or save as another name )

How can i make sure that the color profiles are the same. this is where i am having trouble. because i made a custom boot image before using Photoshop CS and now i have upgraded to Photoshop CS2 and when CS2 saves the .PNG file it saves it in a different color profile than the CS did. Sorry if this a very amateurish question. I am no graphic designer I use photoshop for fun. Thank you guys
I was able to load my .PNG created on CS2 into the new .iswp. But with a work around. It was initially rejected by pwnage tool when I browsed and selected it (i am guessing because of different color profile). then i selected the one that created in CS and it accepted it. Then i went to the folder where i saved my custom boot image (made in CS) and moved that .png file and replaced it with the new .png file (made is CS2, the one pwnage was rejecting) and renamed with the same file name as the .png created in CS. then returned to Pwnage tool and created the custom .iswp. then when i restored it to my iPhone voila my newly created boot .png (the CS2 created one) image was on the screen. I don't why or how it worked, but i can say is that it did. so thought i would share for people if they are having similar problems like me.
I would still like to learn how to create it on Photoshop without pwnage rejecting it. thank you guys

I tried on two completely different macbooks. The program bounces in the dock but doesn't load. I see the pwnage tool in the upper left hand side of the screen but no application window.
I have tried everything. people are having the same problem and posting but generally getting ignored.

I managed to get the app running by going in the OS-X Activity Monitor and killing the PS sub process of pwnage tool. I don't know if it works after this btut at least the app is running.

This works, in so much as it gets the app working. Ive no idea whether it'll pwn the iphone or not yet as Im not that brave. I may wait for the Dev team to address this and update the app before using it. Suffice to say though by going into Activity Monitor & choosing 'All processes' I saw the process called 'ps', I force quit and the Pwnage tool just started. Itd be good for more people who try this method , and who are braver, to try to see if it gets the app working on their Macs and try to upgrade their phone, as I say if they're feeling brave. I know that seems cowardly but Id prefer to wait and see

It works fine now, but only on my second mac. I tried killing ps sub - did nothing. I booting into safe mode after clearing all 3 caches and repairing permissions and it worked then on the second book.
First book did everything and still doesn't work.
I did the pwnage and the phone is now pwned 2.0 and works fine. couple of weird errors with some apps from the app store but otherwise works perfectly.

Add me to the list of people with the "bounce but no launch" problem. My Machine is Leopard, PowerBook G4, I have run that program that strips out Intel and foreign language libraries, and besides that I'm basically running 'stock'

GOT MINE WORKING!!
Well I got it to launch, I haven't tried to update yet, but I thought I'd post here anyway.
This could be caused by lots of different things, so if it doesn't work for you sorry Charlie, but what I did was updated iTunes to the latest version (I had not updated yet). Still wouldn't work so I did a crazy thing, I rebooted. Now it launches. I don't know if it was the iTunes update, the reboot, or a combination of both, but after I did both it launches.

Neither of those did the trick for me... I have the same bouncing problem but rebooting didn't work, and I already had the latest iTunes.
However, I found these iTunes errors in the log: "Could not perform SSL Handshake" and "Could not enable SSL". I think they are related because they happen every time I start PwnageTool.
Maybe this is of some help to the devvers? PS Thanks for releasing the app!!!

you'll have to be at least 10.5 to get pwnage 2.0 to work. that's what i'm suspecting. Im on Leopard 10.5.4 and it works perfectly.

No, i dont know how to fix it. sorry. but i have created a thread at iphonealley to discuss the issue and try to come up with some common problem. please contribute so we can figure this out. maybe if enough of us are having the problem the Dev Team will pay attention to it, since they obviously have not yet.
- Launch Pwnage Tool 2.0 - Open "Activity Monitor" (in utilities folder) - Find the process "ps" (make sure you look under "all processes") - KILL IT!
Pwnage Tool will now open!

to fix not lunching problem: 1. open pwnage tool 2. open activity monitor (applications/Utilities/activity monitor) 3. in activity monitor scroll down the list until you find "ps" 4. highlight ps and click quit process in the upper left hand corner and click force quit. 5 change to pwnage tool again, it should work.
this worked for me but i take no liblitey if your computer is messed up afterward. I did not discover this!

I've got the same problem on 2 iMacs, then i tried to shut the wifi (or internet, i don't know..) then it worked (apparently only on 1 iMac, but it worked!!!)

I don't think so. Jailbreak means you can install other software on it, not just software from the Apple apstore. Even with unlock, which you can't do yet with 3g, you will still need internet access. I think this will still be traced to your sim card, so not having a package could lead to roaming charges. However, I am not sure how this will work. I am assuming the internet media package you have is to access the net from your phone, likely on a 3g network. To be frank, sounds cheap to me - I am in Canada.

see, my plan was to buy the iphone 3g with a $40 a month talking plan and a mandatory $30 a month internet plan with At&T(phone company). A representative at at&t told me once if i were to cancel the internet plan on that line later, the iphone will no longer function for use on that line. I figured jailbreaking it would allow me to cancel the internet plan and still be able to use the iphone. I would just use wifi for internet or get charged the standard charge per byte. Would jailbreaking allow me to do this?

Working now. I discovered just how much of an idiot I am - i wasn't exactly following the last instruction. Once the ipws is created, you actually have to use it - if you just click on restore in itunes, it uses the ipsw from apple; you must use "option-click" on restore then browse on your desktop (mac) to find the custom ipsw and then you are good to go.

At the very end of the process, make sure when you are in itunes you don't just click on the restore button - you must hit option click (alt click with an external keyboard) to browse for the ipws that is now on your desktop, and once you find it, then click OK, and you should be good to go. If you don't, it just uses the file you downloaded from Apple by default, not the one you just created. Of course, this locks out your phone.

Seems I just de-activated my phone. It was previously 1.1.3, unlocked and jailbroken with iNdependence.
I used the Pwnage tool to create the custom ISPW, restored my phone first in recovery mode (my fatl mistake?), the in proper DFU mode. iTunes now gives me this error, and I can only make emergency calls. -------------- The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be used with iTunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone.
Check that the sim card is inserted in your iPhone and that it is not PIN-locked. ------------- Help please!

you probably said that you were a legit iphone user, when you actually aren't. The app is way to cute and it makes it hard to use. The question was really meant to be 'Do you need to unlock your phone to run on an unofficial provider?'
Answering that you are not a legit user will create a firmware that will unlock the phone on first run using 'Bootneuter'.
Honestly I respect the impressive skillz that went into this app, and I think geeks should have their chance to have fun and include jokes, but this app has a pretty low usability factor.

Hay guys. This is what I needed to do. Its kind of tricky. I shut off my phone --complete shut off. Then I held down the power button and the home button for 8 seconds--TOGETHER!! Then I let go of the power button but still holding down the home button. The iphone screen is black but is working. It, the pwnage tool, will let you know then that is in DFU mode or not. If you fail just keep trying it. try not to pay much attebtion to the "counter" instructions on the screen. they are incorrect. Remember, its tricky but keep trying. It took me 2 or 3 times to get it but thats how you get it in the correct DFU mode. Then, when you succeeded, go to itunes and OK in the box that tells you "your iphone is in restore mode and needs restoring"
Then press OPTION key (ALT) and click RESTORE at the same time. you will see a drop down menu--click the ipsw in the applications folder and click open. That will work.

No. you dont plug in the phone until you get to the DFU page in the tool. After it asks if you have ev.r PWND your phone before. If your not sure, click no and then plug in your phone. I dont know if it works with the 3g. I have a 2g and it works well for me.

Hi Everyone,
I had 2 iphones - mine was running 1.1.4 hacked in Australia and this tool worked no problems.
HOWEVER - the point of this post is that I also had a friends iphone who had upgraded to 2.0 by mistake and pwned ALSO WORKED.
The steps to take for hacking an already upgraded 2.0 are (do NOT have your iphone plugged in)
1. Open up the pwned 2.0 2. Goto EXPERT MODE - if you use simple mode you will get errors 6, 20, 1600, 1601 etc and it will NOT work 3. Select the 2.0 firmware and also select relevant *.bins 4. When get to main menu screen, go into Bootnetuer and select "Update Bootloader" and select "4.6" 5. Go back to main menu and enter General Settings --> select Enable Baseband Update 6. Then build the firmware and save it to your desktop 7. Once the firmware is built, pwned will ask you to plug in your iphone via USB. 8. It will then step you through the process of enter DFU mode 9. Once this is complete it will ask you to boot up itunes (when you plugged you phone in it may have already loaded) 10. Hold down ALT (on MAC) and select the firmware on your desktop 11. iPhone will update - LEAVE IT for the entire process. 12. It should install and all will work :)

Short question: when i am trying to buit the custom firmware the tool ist not asking me for the *.bin. It will built the custom firmware but as ia said no *.bin is included. Does anybody has the same situation? Thanks for Help

Doesn't really matter if the pwned APP can't put you into DFU mode. You can do it yourself.
1. Turn off the phone & plug into USB (connected obviously :P) 2. Hold the power and home buttons at the same time for 10 secs 3. Release power button and continue holding home button 4. iTunes will recognize the phone 5. Hit "Option/ALT" key and click restore. 6. Select the firmware on your desktop 7. Await 2.0 love (feel free to drink a beer at this point)

ok i think i did something bad. It now gives me an unknown error (16). I tried restoring it many times and it always pops with this msg, even restoring on the non custom version. What do you think this means?

You can't stuff anything up :)
If nothing works - reinstall an "official" version of firmware 2.0 and start again at the beginning making sure everything is correctly set up.( i.e. device support folder etc etc and follow steps at the top)
Its really "impossible" to brick your iphone (famous last words! :D)

I tried playing around with the app store and I cant seem to use any of the programs there becuase they said they do not recognize my password.. the ones i downloaded into my app file in itunes does not work nor when I open up an app it automactically quits. Let me know if you can solve this problem. Thanks

Hmm not sure. You need an Apple iTunes password to make any apps work. Try logging into iTunes and resetting your password.

1. Open Finder 2. Goto "Mac HD" 3. Goto "Library" and then to "Itunes" 4. If "Device Support" EXISTS - open folder and delete everything in there. 5. If "Device Support" folder doesn't exist - create a new folder called "Device Support"

BTW - yes you can upload the backup. Backups don't affect the firmware - its just sms, phone nos etc (and I think it says this when you load it in itunes. i.e. something like "backup old file? this wont affect firmware"

Follow and check all steps and all will work.
=== Pre-upgrade Checks === 1. Restore your iPhone with the Original & Official Apple iphone 2.0 software. 2. Phone will be "emergency" only status.

=== Download Bootloaders === 1. You need both 3.9 and 4.6 (available via 100s of links on this page - particularly at the top)
=== Upgrade Steps === 1. Open up the pwned 2.0 2. Goto EXPERT MODE - if you use simple mode you will get errors 6, 20, 1600, 1601 etc and it will NOT work 3. Select the 2.0 firmware and also select relevant *.bins 4. When get to main menu screen, go into Bootnetuer and select "Update Bootloader" and select "4.6" 5. Go back to main menu and enter General Settings --> select Enable Baseband Update 6. Then build the firmware and save it to your desktop 7. Once the firmware is built, pwned will ask you to plug in your iphone via USB. 8. It will then step you through the process of enter DFU mode 9. Once this is complete it will ask you to boot up itunes (when you plugged you phone in it may have already loaded) 10. Hold down ALT (on MAC) and select the firmware on your desktop 11. iPhone will update - LEAVE IT for the entire process. 12. It should install and all will work :)
=== If DFU Fails === 1. Plug iPhone into USB & then TURN OFF (connected obviously :P) 2. Hold the power and home buttons at the same time for 10 secs 3. Release power button and continue holding home button 4. iTunes will recognize the phone in "Restore Mode" 5. Hit "Option/ALT" key and click restore. 6. Select the firmware on your desktop 7. Await 2.0 love (feel free to drink a beer at this point)

Got my first gen iPhone updated from 1.1.4 to 2.0 too after a couple tries. This is great! Thank you so much! The simple mode didn't work for me though, I had to use the expert mode to get rid of the 1600 and 1601 errors (both happened to me in two different runs).

I kept getting the DFU Failure notice but I knew that my phone was in DFU mode. So I just grabbed the .ipsw off the desktop and used the restore function. Worked like a charm!

Thanks for your list of steps. I would have given up if they were not on here. Heaps of respect to the Team for creating this. My first gen iPhone had been unlocked with ZiPhone from Zibri. I have to say that ZiPhone has a far superior interface that didn't require DFU mode and all that jazz.
Such a shame that the various people who worked on unlocks etc couldn't stick together for the common good. I hope Zibri manages to create a new version of ZiPhone that works in the same way as the existing one does.

why do you unplug your phone during the download in step 2? i would think that Pwnage tool would unlock the phone once this upgrade was installed? So, isn't the point to install the upgrade, then unlock the phone with the tool? Sorry, seems too "hacky" a process for me.

My IMEI number blocked here in Turkey because i bought my phone from USA.
The new baseband is flashable i know it because it is already unclocked and Its a first gen iPhone (not a 3G).
All i wanna know is: Is there a tool out there to fake the imei number? (Like the feature in Stupid Ziphone)

I had the same setup. (1.1.4 via Ziphone.) Did the same as you until step 4. At step 5 my phone would not go into DFU. I paniced, pressed the restore button in iTunes, paniced again realizing what I had just done, in the middle of the upgrade i turned off the phones power (yes I am officially stupid). Now I am stuck with my iPhone in connect to iPhone mode and no restores will work. Is my iPhone screwed 4 ever? Any help would be appreciated. Any comments calling me a stupid loser are unnessary as I am well aware of this fact.

Got it into DFU and started restoring with custom firmware. The pineapple appeared and I was very happy for a few minutes... Then came the error from iTunes and now it´s stuck with the pineapple and spinning loadbar thing.

Hey guys, I’ve been trying to make Pwnage Tool open on my Mac since yesterday but it wasn’t working. It was simply jumping up and down on the dock forever, even after I restarted and installed it from different sources. If you want it to work on your mac DO THE FOLLOWING!!!!!!
1. Go to Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor 2. In Activity Monitor, from the top Drop Down choose “All Processes” 3. Double Click on Pwnage Tool 2.0 4. While its bouncing on the desktop, in the Actitivies Monitor, locate a Process called “ps” 5. Highlight “ps” and at the top of the Activity Monitor click “Quit Process” 6. It will ask you if you are sure, Click “Okay” 7. At this point, (once the “ps” Process has quit) the bouncing Pwnage Tool will settle and OPEN!
I hope this helps! It worked on my computer as well as my friends’ and my boyfriends computers! Wish you luck, the Pwnage Tool is fucking awesome!

Hi and thanks for this user guide. I get to step 7 and when the iphone (1G) restarts from the pineapple logo it goes back to being a locked iphone with a non approved SIM card. Any ideas.

I jailbroke,activated and unlocked my 1.1.1 iphone using ZiPhone. I have followed all the steps in creating the custom IPSW file using the Pwnage 2.0.1 software. I then enter the DFU mode sucessfully using the tool, quit Pwnage and then restore the iPhone using the custom IPSW file. Once restored, itunes says that the restore was succesful. Later iphone is not recognized in iTunes and my phone is in its original state - locked and unactivated. I dont understand where i went wrong.

I successfully created a new "custom" firmware file using Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 to use on my 1st gen iPhone. All went well and I am now using the latest Apple software update. Unlocked, jailbroke, and activated.
Is there any technical reason why someone else with a 1st gen iPhone could not bypass all the creation hoopla and simply use the restore file I created?

here is the most useful boot loader package bl39.bin and bl46.bin
One thing it seems a few of you missed is that you have to restore the phone in itunes using the ispw file on your desktop. To do that hold down your option key while hitting the restore button.
Also, THERE IS NO WINDOWS SUPPORT YET!
Also, I would be happy to mirror the app as well if needed.

I also get this message every time. I suspect it might be because I have a fake carrier name that was configured from the command line back in fw 1.x days, and that has been carried through with the restoration of data from iTunes. I have not figured out how to remove this message. Only details I can find are here:
Of course, I have no such directory /Users/[Username]/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support/ so I don't know where it's failing.

one trick in the US network is to set the carrier name to AT&T by changing the "unknown" in the info.plist to ATT_US. The file is located in /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/Unknown.bundle/

As I said in another reply, I had the same problem when I put ,y 2G iPhone into DFU. However, if you put it into plain Recovery mode (the one where it shows the iTunes logo and the sync cable), it'll restore just fine.
Give that a go, it worked for me. :)

I had the same problem but it's pretty simple: PwnageTool 2.0 attempts to guide you into getting into DFU mode. The first step you have to do is "connect your device to the USB port". But if your iphone is already connected PwnageTool thinks something went wrong and gives you a "failed to enter DFU mode" error. So try running PwnageTool with an UNCONNECTED iPhone and it will work. But it doesn't really matter anyway. You can just put your iPhone into dfu mode, close pwnage tool and restore using the custom firmware - that's exactly what pwnageTool wants you to do.

Once it's made the custom image, and you've been told you're a failure, quit Pwnage, put your phone into recovery mode, launch itunes, option click restore, select the ipsw on your desktop and restore. The rest is automatic on the phone. YOu won't need to go back into Pwnage.

Hold the "Alt" key down when you click "Restore" and it will give you a file browser. (It might be the apple key - i'm using a generic keyboard)

If you're getting the error 6, the key is to have the iPhone in DFU mode (follow the instructions iPwn app gives ... took me a few tries to get it into that mode). Once in DFU mode, use iTunes to restore with the custom firmware.

The program was for some reazon jumping the screen where it forced me to get in to DFU mode. i solved by restarting my MBP without the iPhone pluged.
ran the application and carefully clicked next each time.. making sure to avoid double clicks.
oh! and i also ran mkdir ~/Library/iTunes/Device\ Support
since i didnt had that folder
im not restoring using itunes.

you have to create an additional directory ... read update #3 to the primary post: Update 3: If you get Error 1600 from iTunes, try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.
I had to do this a little round-about, but you get the idea.

I finally got passed the error 1600 using the update 3. When the DFU programing was ready the iPhone is now in a loop mode.
I see the pineapple for about 7 seconds and then the phone reboots, show the pineapple for 7 seconds and the is repeats it self.
I can't get it out of the loop, tried getting in to the DFU and Restore mode but it fails as the phone reboots all the time.
Acctually I did manage to go to the "Russian"? dude which I belive is a restore mode and tried to reflash the custom firmware but now I am stuck...
Really need ideeas as how to proceed.

Can someone please help me? I Think I just bricked my phone. I Tried to restore my phone through itunes and now everytime I plug it in, I dont have a option to restore. I have downloaded both the iphone custom restore and the bootloader. Can someone who has some time please try and help? I will pay you 30 dollars via pay pal NOW if you ca. Your phone failed at the update... (you probably pwned your phone a couple times) All you need to do is get it to restore one more time, and pwnage will take care of the rest. If you can't get it to restore then you aren't putting it into DFU mode correctly, it takes a few tries for me and I've done this on 50 phones. But really! Don't fret, it's all reversable, don't pay someone 30 dollars... just be patient and it will all work out.
Try to restore it ONE MORE TIME... connect your phone to itunes... hold the power button and the home button until it turns BLACK then let go of the power button RIGHT AWAY (hint: if you let the pineapple pop up one more time you have to start all over) the screen should remain black connected to the computer and after about 15 seconds iTunes will recognize it as an iphone that needs to be restored... THEN RESTORE IT WITH OFFICIAL APPLE FIRMWARE and start all over again with the pwnage tool...
how did you do that? I cannot recover it to 1.1.4 or 2.0, could you tell me how you did it?

When the pineapple show, press and hold down both HOME and POWER ON/OFF button until the screen goes black, keep them pressed down for 2 more seconds and then release the POWER button only while holding down the HOME button for 10 more seconds. iTunes will detect the phone i DFU mode and you have the option to restore to the original firmware og your choice.

Im having the same problem, if I use DFU mode or recovery mode and restore to the custom firmware it updates it but then the phone just keeps restarting every 10 or so secs. I can restore it back to the official 2.0 firmware and start again but it just keeps looping. Can anyone help?

I believe old users who used ziphone could have problems with pwnage tool. It's just my notion. Downgrading as we speak. It's not worth all this hassle.

Derek, I am on Iphone 3G so I dont think it is ziphone that makes the loop.
However I tried the following:
I downloaded a prebuild iPhone 3G ipsw file from piratebay and used the DFU to restore. I DID NOT go into loop and booted up. All is fine EXCEPT I get no carrier so it is like an iphone Touch :(
So I am not sure what the difference between my own build and the downloaded build is.
I am still trying to figure it out :)

I had the same problem. Went back to 1.1.4 (this is a bit tricky, there are online manuals for this, you need iBrickr to get phone out of restore mode after the downgrade) then only did the pwn for 1.1.4 (no new ipws install). Then downloaded this ipsw: http://rapidshare.de/files/40034466/iPhone1_1_2... Restored in normal restore mode (no need for DFU) et voila!

I finally got it to work on my ipod touch. After errors (6) then followed by 1600 First DFU is not the itunes logo + usb. DFU mode shows nothing.
But iTunes will recognize it. I connected my iPod in DFU mode. I removed the steps listed in update 3. **Make sure you do it in your OWN USER directory, not only the system directory!!
Then it was smooth sailings, i didn't get the U FAIL image again. and instead got the step by step from Pwnagetool.

When i put my itouch in dfu, the screen is black. nothing is suppose to be on the screen, nor should it be powered on. iTunes will recognize it in recovery mode.
to get to dfu. from your home screen. hold down power + home for 7-9 seconds. then let go of just the power and keep pressing home.
nothing should happen, besides iTunes popping up.

One question though, when running this - I select iPhone and browse for the ipsw package, I have both iPhone1,1_2.0_5A345_Restore.ipsw & iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw and the tool reports that they are both the wrong package. Running on PPC 10.5.4.

I haven't tried this myself yet...can't get my hands on a mac until tomorrow, but I think you guys are using the wrong version of the 2.0 firmware. There was a leaked version, and then Apple released the official version which you get through iTunes. They both have the exact same filename, but some of the files and overall file size are a bit different. I'm guessing u need to use the OFFICIAL firmware 2.0, which you can find here:
No... That error happens similarly when choosing the firmware 1.1.4 or more older version. Of course, firmware 1.1.4 is Apple OFFICIAL fw. oh god...

Make sure you get the correct version, not the early released one that came back before Apple officially released it. Then you have to remember to remove the .zip at the end and keep it as a .ipsw - The icon will change to a little package box. ;)

i just hit download 2.0 in iTunes and used the one iTunes downloaded with PWNAGE. And here i am, PWN'D 2.0 running appstore and cydia with Super Monkey Ball, Crash Bandicoot, Pandora and many other apps with no slow downs or problems. And im on T-Mobile :)

Good question: I am a tmobile customer in Colorado. I had to reset my gmail account, and you may have to reset your email as well. But most importantly, I did download remote from the app store!!!! And yes it works. I am in the process of setting up the rest of this. Not sure about Cydia as yet. Safari works, phone works, sync works, email now works. Apptap, no luck in the build process:not available not supported. Right now cydia is stuck, maybe the sources that I added are not compatable with cydia???

How did you reset your gmail account? I can't get it to work. I am getting an error message in iTunes saying that it was not possible to sync my email account because the iPhone cancelled it. When I try to open Mail on the iPhone it just closes and I can't delete my account on the iPhone or change the settings either. Any solutions?

if you dont want to set up your phone as new device to get the mail app working you can simply install terminal via cydia, type login, then root, then alpine and then after it logs in type in rm -fR /private/var/mobile/Library/Mail exactly as spelt there and simply sync again with itunes and it will reload all your mail stuff. basically this just deletes mail folder and then reinstalls. but it works if you need more help email at chomby1991@gmail.com

Guys I'm wondering if anyone can help me I tried pwnage tool 2.0 worked like a charm! I am using a T-Mobile USA Sim. It has the $20.00 data plan. I can use the phone and the voicemail featuresbut not the edge $20.00 plan. I just put my sim in and it seems that it is using the AT&T settings for data, how do i change these settings to t-mobile settings? I got an error when pwnagetool 2.0 try to pwn the iphone 3G. It says, that he can't build the restore.ipsw... can somebody proceed the same error?
i use a macbook pro with os x 10.5.4.
in the first version of the pwnagetool you can pwn your iphone seperatly from the IPSW-build-process. i miss this function... :-(

i do believe that it modifies the firmware file, but legally you can't distribute the modified firmware, which is why things like, and psp custom firmwares, use the original file and modify it.

there's no longer a separate pwning step... all you need is the ipsw (and pwnage tool makes a couple of changes to itunes support files on your computer, too, so itunes doesn't interfere with the magic)

I got the same error when I put the iPhone in DFU mode. However, when I put it into plain Recovery mode (that shows the itunes + sync cable on the screen), the restoring worked flawlessly. Give that a go, and see what happens. Good luck!

Yup, it's working just fine at the moment. About Recovery, I did it sort of by accident, but for what it's worth this is what I did:
1) Plug in your Phone 2) Turn it off while plugged in. 3) Press and hold the Home button and then press and hold the power button. 4) After about 3-5 seconds, let go of the Power button but keep holding the home button. 5) Your screen should turn on and eventually show the iTunes logo

If you are trying to use the Pwnage Tool then you have to be in DFU mode, not Recovery mode.
What I posted was to bypass the problem of getting the Error 1600 or Error 6 when Restoring the custom firmware to the already Pwned device.

You can use your friend's Mac to use Pwnage Tools. What will happen is that it'll delete everything off your iPhone/iPod Touch, and proceed to unlock and all that. After that, just go to your PC and resync it with your usual iTunes. It'll work.

I haven't tried this myself yet...can't get my hands on a mac until tomorrow, but I think you are using the wrong version of the 2.0 firmware. There was a leaked version, and then Apple released the official version which you get through iTunes. They both have the exact same filename, but some of the files and overall file size are a bit different. I'm guessing u need to use the OFFICIAL firmware 2.0, which you can find here:
i restored mine in itunes, it downloaded the right one automatically, when its downloaded it and told you its the wrong sim , then do the PwnageTool !! ;o)

iDevTeam, you guys are simply GENIUSES. to anyone with iPhone 2G 1.1.4 who can't figure it out, here's how I started out:
First get the bootloader files... links can be found in other comments on this page. (BL-39.bin and BL-46.bin) Connect iphone to Mac > Click Restore button > ipsw file starts downloading > Disconnect iPhone while downloading > When downloading is done open PwnageTool 2.0 and follow instructions from there.
(I'm not done upon writing this comment, so i hope it works...)

Doesn't seem to work with the iPhone (classic) selected. The 3G option finds and uses the 2.0 firmware build 347, but the classic iPhone option does not see build 347, and gives me an error if I try to select it. I'm downloading 345 right now.

I have dl'd and installed. I have pwn'd my iPhone 2.5 g, running 2.0 at the time.
No problems encountered. A little disappointed that Installer.app not supported (yet). However am well aware that the dev-team don't write that code. And that most of the old 1.*.* firmware a aren't compatible with 2.0 yet anyway.
Cydia installed, but same deal on apps other than system tools.
This will come, I am sure.
I use ATT, so didn't need to activate or BootNeuter. When running this set up, just click on Expert Mode. Deselect theboxes for activation and boot neuter. Then proceed.
I have the bootloader bin files on my computer in the same directory as the Pawnage App. But couldn't locate.

I updated my phone to the 2.0 Firmware, and pwnage tool had no problem when I tried to select the ipsw. However, I keep getting a Bootloader v3.9 file not found error. Perhaps I am doing something wrong or omitted a key step, but as for now I'm in a panic!

I'm trying PwnageTool on my current 1.x iPhone (never been pwned before, but it was unlocked/etc with iLiberty+).
It builds the custom .ipsw, but fails to enter DFU mode.
I see this in the log:
2008-07-19 20:09:22 - Successfully built custom .ipsw file at '/Users/......../Desktop/iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw'. 2008-07-19 20:09:24 - Failed to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw file.
I also tried manually putting the phone into DFU mode before running PwnageTool - same problem.
Does anyone have any ideas???

Hey Dev-Team, my problem seemed to have been fixed by choosing the advanced option, although i though that the simple mode would have jailbroken the device, a bug maybe?

The tool isn't recognizing my phone in DFU and the custom image write is failing with error(6) in iTunes. Still trying lots of stuff. Can someone give the setup for a successful build? I've used a hackint0sh to restore, and now trying to restore the image with windows (fail) - I guess I'll move to an authentic mac next just for grins.

i'm having the DFU issue like a lot of people are. But has anyone else noticed that on the "Failed to enter DFU mode" screen that the iPhone picture is fucked. The picture has the USB cable going into the side of the iPhone with the home button in the wrong place. Something isn't right here.

The guys that can't activate - just a guess but maybe they clicked yes to being a legit iPhone user when maybe they need to click no? Legit users shouldn't need to activate, only jailbreak whereas non legit users will need to activate it. Just my $1.

The phone should be pwn'd first.If you have DFU error here is what to do. Download the 1.0 pwnage and click 1.1.4 firmware, then click ipwner, put it in dfu mode. It pwn's the phone. Afterwards use 2.0 pwng build the custom 2.0 firmware, if it ask you if you already pwn, say yes. put phone in dfu mode, in itunes restore using the custom 2.0 firmware, then BAM done!

iPod touch 8GB, on 2.0, I clicked "no" when it asked if I had pwned before, said it failed to enter DFU mode, then I option-clicked the firmware in iTunes, and the finished "Extracting software" and then gave me an unknown error, -6. If you it seems to spin forever for you at various points, just wait. It does get there eventually.
Seems to have something to do with the new spotlight indexing (the 'mds' process is going crazy). Just let it spin, though - it will get done eventually.

I have successfully upgraded my iPhone 2.5G to 2.0 firmware. I also got the "Cannot enter DFU mode, get a Zune" message, so I just closed the app and put my iphone in recovery mode and connect it to iTunes. When in iTunes, I clicked "Restore" while pressing the "option" key and selected the IPSW PwnageTool built.
Then I just sat back and waited for the restore to complete. =D

You are champions. You are clever and deserve all the best in your lives. After having my iPhone bricked once I updated to v.2.0 (from 1.1.4), and since I use Virgin in Australia, the "unauthorised" carrier, I was not able to power up the iPhone and not even use it as an MP3 player. Although I love Apple for their design and cleverness, I hate them for becoming too greedy and wanting to force customers to a particular carrier only, so they can get a bit of the profit from people's calls. Telstra (iPhone reseller No.1 in Aus) is a rip-off big time (everybody knows this, except them), Vodafone (iPhone reseller No.2) doesn't have the coverage where I work, Optus (iPhone reseller No.3) doesn't have the deals like Virgin (who are not selling iPhone (yet)). And I am not a criminal, I bought my iPhone last year (long before it came to Australia) and certainly I had to order it unlocked to use it here. I paid for it with my hard earned money, and I was very upset when my iPhone bricked completely with the update to v.2.0. Dev Tem guys, you returned my phone today with so many important numbers and calendar appointments, and you did it for free. Your PWnage tool is so clever, and complete, that I had my phone recovered within half an hour or so, even if I did not have the bootloader and what not. The PWnage made everything so easy, so I rebuilt my own installation package and I am nor running v.2.0. I already paid 23 Pounds three days ago to some wankers at (iphoneunlocking.org.uk) for their software that didn't work. Not only it didn;t work, they never respond, although they guarantee your money back. To all possible unlockers that found themselves in a similar situation as myself - DO NOT USE the iphoneunlocking.org.uk - THEIR SOFTWARE DOESN'T WORK. And one last helping point to some that may end up needing bootloader 3.9 and 4.6, you can find them here (http://iphonefreakz.com/iphone-firmwares/). Dear Dev Team guys I want to pay for your trouble, although I know you did it for free. I will feel better if at least I pay you the same amount as I paid to the above mentioned wankers, please give me details how can I do that (my e-mail address is visible to you). Also i initially did a simple process of creating firmware but it did not activate the phone. I then went back and did an advanced firmware creation and it worked peachy!!!

The right version for 1st generation iPhone is: iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (!!!) NOT THE iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (--> this one is intended for the 3G Phones)
So get the right ipsw and evrything just works fine!

I had to put my phone in DFU mode then restart pwnage then turn off my phone ad then go into DFU mode again..

Dammit, iTunes interrupted the baseband flashing to unlock (my fault, I know - it was trying to restore my backup of contacts and shit).. now my 1st gen won't boot. Can get DFU and recovery mode, but iTunes can't prepare it for a restore anymore. If anyone has any hints, I'd be forever in your debt :)
Absolutely wonderful work guys, thanks again.. took me a while to get iTunes to accept the custom firmware ... perhaps something to do with having 7.7 beta in the past and the SDK ... reinstalled iTunes and entered DFU mode manually and it worked eventually after errors 6, 3, 1600, 1602 and a few others ;)

It doesn't open on my mac. I am using 10.5.4. intel and it just bounces endlessly in the dock. I have tried several mirrors and every time it finishes downloading I open the program and it will not open. If anybody could help that would be great!

For those with problems - Error 6 or DFU mode related...
That fixed my problem. I kept going into Restore mode (which has the itunes symbol and the cord) and not DFU. Here are the instructions that made it clear to me: DFU= hold power/home for 7 seconds, screen goes blank, wait 2 seconds with blank screen and release power button, keep holding the home button until itunes recognises the phone as in recovery mode and the phone has a blank screen

Just finished to make my iPhone work with the FW 2.0. It works pretty nice a little bit slower as on 1.1.4 though but everything is OK. I could upload a custom fw somewhere but I don't have access anywhere. If someone can provide an ftp please contact me

Hey, I downloaded the tool in 4 different places, and when I launch it it bounces on the dock, and then doesn't open. It just sits there and won't open up and wont let me quit it. It also doesn't let me reboot withought pushing the power button. Anyone got any ideas? I am on the newest version of Leopard on a 2 ghz macbook.
Is it ok to update your phone though itunes to 2.0?

Thanks for the suggestion - this download was a few megs smaller than the image I was using (this is 218) - I get an md5 of 07df1235aef0bc5f58f331ebc34543be for the "correct" firmware.. but I still got an error (6) when I tried to restore in iTunes.

Ran everything, it all worked out.. phone works exactly like it should EXCEPT I lost my rogers service... so now I cant make calls.
Im restoring back to the apple firmware until this gets the bugs ironed out of it

The same thing happened to me. I was able to fix it though. In expert mode, when configuring the ipsw before building it, go into general settings and uncheck "Activate the phone". If you let iTunes do the activation, it should be okay. I'm on AT&T, it's working perfectly.
Super work team, once this baby gets installer working it'll be perfect. ^_^

You guys absolutely rule. Just upgraded from 1.1.4 (with turbosim) to 2.0 (still with turbosim which i probably don't need now). All working perfectly. A bit scary though not having any instructions.....just stumbled through it. P.S Thanks to Simon for supplying link to the required bootloader files.

Hey, I got a problem. I downloaded the tool from 4 places, and each time it doesn't fully open. It bounces on the dock for awhile, and then shows in the toolbar but does not come up. It also will not go away unless I force quit. I am running the newest version of leopard on a 2.0 ghz macbook. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Something went wrong. I have a 1st gen iphone, was 1.1.4 unlocked w pwned. Accidentally upgraded to 2.0 with itunes. Now I went trough all the procees, it was succesfully restored by itunes and at restart shows the pineapple logo, but it remains locked.

Nothing works. I'm using a 1.1.4 unlocked 2G ziphone.
I installed apple's 2.0 software on it, and when the itunes activation obviously failed, used pwnagetool on it. It creates the .ipsw but then says "failed to enter DFU mode"...when it is in DFU mode the entire time. In log it says: "Failed to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw file."
I also tried to put it into recovery mode and to use itunes to restore the custom .ipsw, but this also fails, itunes tells me: "the iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (6)".
After all this testing and all the hype we get this? Very disappointed.

Correction: I was not in DFU mode, my bad. I thought recovery mode and DFU mode were the same thing (they are not).

my 3G iPhone got bricked. I'm not stupid.. I did everything as the app said.. did not use bootneuter or anything dangerous, but I can't get any signal.. tried rebooting, airplane-mode, sim-card switch, but still no signal.

If you are legit 3g subscriber but you tell PwnageTool otherwise, you won't get your carrier signal. Just prepare another ipsw with the proper selection.
A quicker way if you are good at the shell prompt is to use Cydia to install openssh, log into your iPhone, and do "rm -rf /var/root/Library/Lockdown" and then reboot your iPhone.

I can't get the tool to open on my MBP. It's bounces for a while, then goes dead. The little light below the icon on the dock, indicating that the application is running, does not light up. I've downloaded it a couple of times from devteam and the mirror, thinking I might have gotten a corrupt copy, but that didn't work. Neither did restarting the computer. Error 1 is usually caused by not being at iTunes v7.7.
Please Help. I downloaded Pwnage 2 and Unzip on on the desktop of my MacBook Pro. Click the black and white Pwnage Tool. No window show up. Quick note to those with 3G iPhone on 02 network in the UK, I just jailbroke the phone, picked the activate option in the Pwnage tool and when it all was done and flashed with the Pwned firmware i had no network displayed and no bars on the phones icon for reception quality.. The settings showed no network either .. iTunes did not complain at me or feel the need to activate me so that part seems to work, i just could not make any calls :-) Re-did the work and did not select the activate phone option and all was well ... Your exp may be different ...

Yes if you are legitimate subscriber and go through the "advanced" options, do not select "Activate". Only those who aren't legit should use that option.
I've one comment - not exactly a bug, but here you go anyway....
I backed up my 2G phone before the procedure (phone was previously pwned at 1.1.4) and all worked fine, but when you go for the re-sync of music from iTunes, you get no dialogue from iTunes. Solution - deselect one of the playlists and hit apply. Then it does....

Well i made a successful hack on 3G iPhone but iTunes won't prompt me for my carrier settings. So with this hack i'm just running a iPod Touch.
Process completes but when the phone reboots it is still locked and un activated. im running a first gen phone that was running 1.1.3 with Turbosim.

I thought it will be good to write a brief explanation for the people who use the PwnageTool for the first time like me :) Yes I did it and unlock works for me. I also checked the exchange support, youtube, appstore... All works fine.
I had a 2g iphone 1.1.4 that has been unlocked by ziphone software. I did it once and I used it till now without a problem. I was a little bit afraid to try pwnagetool 2.0 because of what zibri may have done to my iphone, but it worked great and it will work for you.
Here are the steps I took;
1. I upgraded to Itunes 7.7
2. Connected my iphone. It deteced the iphone and asked for an upgrade, I just cliked download only. This is how I got the original firmware form apple :)Then disconnected iphone just after the download started.
3. Before opening the pwnagetool I put my iphone in dfu mode. I tried at least 4 times to do that. The trick was to hold down the power and home botton wait until it restarts. Then pluck it into the dock wait for ten seconds during the apple logo and then release it . It is totally black but itunes recognized it as in recovery. This is the dfu we need.
4. I did not choose the expert mode. Chosed iphone 1g . It had found the restore firmware that itunes had already downloaded. Asked me for the bootloaders. I browsed both of them respectively and then it created the custom ipws.
5.Clicked next and it recognized the dfu but asked for shutdown. I had problem here before, It said that it can not put the device in dfu mode. This time it detected and asked for a shutdown. I just pressed both power and home button until it restarted. Then watch for the screen. It tells you when to release the power button and when to release home button. Then it was ok. My iphone was ready to be restored with the custom ipws. The tool gave a message everything ok and i must just close pwnagetool and use itunes.
6. I didn't do anything to iphone just left it where it was in dfu mode. Itunes had already gave the message that it needs to restore my iphone. I just said ok. The restore screen was in front of me. Just pressed alt button on the keyboard and while pressing it i clicked restore, and I showed itunes gently my custom ipws. It restored it successfully.
7. After that the phone rebooted, bootneutral was opened automatically , first it neutral the boot and then flashed the baseband. All was automatic. Then after the last reboot, there it was jailbroken and unlocked with all features working.
I hope you guys get lucky as I did.

I was able to load my .PNG created on CS2 into the new .iswp. But with a work around. It was initially rejected by pwnage tool when I browsed and selected it (i am guessing because of different color profile). then i selected the one that created in CS and it accepted it. Then i went to the folder where i saved my custom boot image (made in CS) and moved that .png file and replaced it with the new .png file (made is CS2, the one pwnage was rejecting) and renamed with the same file name as the .png created in CS. then returned to Pwnage tool and created the custom .iswp. then when i restored it to my iPhone voila my newly created boot .png (the CS2 created one) image was on the screen. I don't why or how it worked, but i can say is that it did. so thought i would share for people if they are having similar problems like me.
I would still like to learn how to create it on Photoshop without pwnage rejecting it.

Suffice to say though by going into Activity Monitor & choosing 'All processes' I saw the process called 'ps', I force quit and the Pwnage tool just started.
Itd be good for more people who try this method , and who are braver, to try to see if it gets the app working on their Macs and try to upgrade their phone, as I say if they're feeling brave.
I know that seems cowardly but Id prefer to wait and see
First book did everything and still doesn't work.
I did the pwnage and the phone is now pwned 2.0 and works fine. couple of weird errors with some apps from the app store but otherwise works perfectly.

My Machine is Leopard, PowerBook G4, I have run that program that strips out Intel and foreign language libraries, and besides that I'm basically running 'stock'
Well I got it to launch, I haven't tried to update yet, but I thought I'd post here anyway.
This could be caused by lots of different things, so if it doesn't work for you sorry Charlie, but what I did was updated iTunes to the latest version (I had not updated yet). Still wouldn't work so I did a crazy thing, I rebooted. Now it launches. I don't know if it was the iTunes update, the reboot, or a combination of both, but after I did both it launches.
However, I found these iTunes errors in the log: "Could not perform SSL Handshake" and "Could not enable SSL". I think they are related because they happen every time I start PwnageTool.
Maybe this is of some help to the devvers? PS Thanks for releasing the app!!!

To fix the bouncing app issue:
- Launch Pwnage Tool 2.0
- Open "Activity Monitor" (in utilities folder)
- Find the process "ps" (make sure you look under "all processes")
- KILL IT!
Pwnage Tool will now open!

1. open pwnage tool
2. open activity monitor (applications/Utilities/activity monitor)
3. in activity monitor scroll down the list until you find "ps"
4. highlight ps and click quit process in the upper left hand corner and click force quit.
5 change to pwnage tool again, it should work.
this worked for me but i take no liblitey if your computer is messed up afterward.

I used the Pwnage tool to create the custom ISPW, restored my phone first in recovery mode (my fatl mistake?), the in proper DFU mode. iTunes now gives me this error, and I can only make emergency calls.

If Itunes doesn't recognize it after 20 seconds REPEAT process... timing is VERY important and it takes everyone a few tries to get it... your phone is fine! relax...
Answering that you are not a legit user will create a firmware that will unlock the phone on first run using 'Bootneuter'.
Honestly I respect the impressive skillz that went into this app, and I think geeks should have their chance to have fun and include jokes, but this app has a pretty low usability factor.
have tried this on 3 intel macs all with the same results...
Remember, its tricky but keep trying. It took me 2 or 3 times to get it but thats how you get it in the correct DFU mode.
Then, when you succeeded, go to itunes and OK in the box that tells you "your iphone is in restore mode and needs restoring"
Then press OPTION key (ALT) and click RESTORE at the same time. you will see a drop down menu--click the ipsw in the applications folder and click open. That will work.

I had 2 iphones - mine was running 1.1.4 hacked in Australia and this tool worked no problems.
HOWEVER - the point of this post is that I also had a friends iphone who had upgraded to 2.0 by mistake and pwned ALSO WORKED.
The steps to take for hacking an already upgraded 2.0 are (do NOT have your iphone plugged in)
1. Open up the pwned 2.0
2. Goto EXPERT MODE - if you use simple mode you will get errors 6, 20, 1600, 1601 etc and it will NOT work
3. Select the 2.0 firmware and also select relevant *.bins
4. When get to main menu screen, go into Bootnetuer and select "Update Bootloader" and select "4.6"
5. Go back to main menu and enter General Settings --> select Enable Baseband Update
6. Then build the firmware and save it to your desktop
7. Once the firmware is built, pwned will ask you to plug in your iphone via USB.
8. It will then step you through the process of enter DFU mode
9. Once this is complete it will ask you to boot up itunes (when you plugged you phone in it may have already loaded)
10. Hold down ALT (on MAC) and select the firmware on your desktop
11. iPhone will update - LEAVE IT for the entire process.
12. It should install and all will work :)

I actually REINSTALLED Firmware 2.0 on this phone as my mate had tried to downgrade. This meant it was a FRESH copy of 2.0. I then started at Step 1 above.

If it doesn't ask you for the bins - just try it anyway as you have already upgraded to a higher baseband anyway as your at 2.0.

Doesn't really matter if the pwned APP can't put you into DFU mode. You can do it yourself.
1. Turn off the phone & plug into USB (connected obviously :P)
2. Hold the power and home buttons at the same time for 10 secs
3. Release power button and continue holding home button
4. iTunes will recognize the phone
5. Hit "Option/ALT" key and click restore.
6. Select the firmware on your desktop
7. Await 2.0 love (feel free to drink a beer at this point)

If nothing works - reinstall an "official" version of firmware 2.0 and start again at the beginning making sure everything is correctly set up.( i.e. device support folder etc etc and follow steps at the top)
Its really "impossible" to brick your iphone (famous last words! :D)
This is the password thats required to make the apps work.

BTW - yes you can upload the backup. Backups don't affect the firmware - its just sms, phone nos etc (and I think it says this when you load it in itunes. i.e. something like "backup old file? this wont affect firmware"

My IMEI number blocked here in Turkey because i bought my phone from USA.
The new baseband is flashable i know it because it is already unclocked and Its a first gen iPhone (not a 3G).

Hey guys, I’ve been trying to make Pwnage Tool open on my Mac since yesterday but it wasn’t working. It was simply jumping up and down on the dock forever, even after I restarted and installed it from different sources. If you want it to work on your mac DO THE FOLLOWING!!!!!!
1. Go to Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor
2. In Activity Monitor, from the top Drop Down choose “All Processes”
3. Double Click on Pwnage Tool 2.0
4. While its bouncing on the desktop, in the Actitivies Monitor, locate a Process called “ps”
5. Highlight “ps” and at the top of the Activity Monitor click “Quit Process”
6. It will ask you if you are sure, Click “Okay”
7. At this point, (once the “ps” Process has quit) the bouncing Pwnage Tool will settle and OPEN!
I hope this helps! It worked on my computer as well as my friends’ and my boyfriends computers! Wish you luck, the Pwnage Tool is fucking awesome!

I have followed all the steps in creating the custom IPSW file using the Pwnage 2.0.1 software.
I then enter the DFU mode sucessfully using the tool, quit Pwnage and then restore the iPhone using the custom IPSW file. Once restored, itunes says that the restore was succesful. Later iphone is not recognized in iTunes and my phone is in its original state - locked and unactivated.
I dont understand where i went wrong.
Is there any technical reason why someone else with a 1st gen iPhone could not bypass all the creation hoopla and simply use the restore file I created?

PwnageTool 2.0 attempts to guide you into getting into DFU mode. The first step you have to do is "connect your device to the USB port". But if your iphone is already connected PwnageTool thinks something went wrong and gives you a "failed to enter DFU mode" error. So try running PwnageTool with an UNCONNECTED iPhone and it will work. But it doesn't really matter anyway. You can just put your iPhone into dfu mode, close pwnage tool and restore using the custom firmware - that's exactly what pwnageTool wants you to do.

My Library/iTunes/ folder didn't even have "Device Support" in there...
The program was for some reazon jumping the screen where it forced me to get in to DFU mode. i solved by restarting my MBP without the iPhone pluged.
ran the application and carefully clicked next each time.. making sure to avoid double clicks.
oh! and i also ran mkdir ~/Library/iTunes/Device\ Support
since i didnt had that folder
im not restoring using itunes.

I had to do this a little round-about, but you get the idea.
When the DFU programing was ready the iPhone is now in a loop mode.
I see the pineapple for about 7 seconds and then the phone reboots, show the pineapple for 7 seconds and the is repeats it self.
I can't get it out of the loop, tried getting in to the DFU and Restore mode but it fails as the phone reboots all the time.
Acctually I did manage to go to the "Russian"? dude which I belive is a restore mode and tried to reflash the custom firmware but now I am stuck...
Really need ideeas as how to proceed.

I managed to get into DFU mode and did a recovery back to original Apple firmware.
I have gone all through the "instruction" sheet and no luck. I dont even get the red "Cant find bootloader" pages, it just go's right into "creatting..." for me. Thanks
I can help I was in that situation before... I had this problem
Your phone failed at the update... (you probably pwned your phone a couple times) All you need to do is get it to restore one more time, and pwnage will take care of the rest. If you can't get it to restore then you aren't putting it into DFU mode correctly, it takes a few tries for me and I've done this on 50 phones. But really! Don't fret, it's all reversable, don't pay someone 30 dollars... just be patient and it will all work out.
Try to restore it ONE MORE TIME... connect your phone to itunes... hold the power button and the home button until it turns BLACK then let go of the power button RIGHT AWAY (hint: if you let the pineapple pop up one more time you have to start all over) the screen should remain black connected to the computer and after about 15 seconds iTunes will recognize it as an iphone that needs to be restored... THEN RESTORE IT WITH OFFICIAL APPLE FIRMWARE and start all over again with the pwnage tool...

I used the DFU
When the pineapple show, press and hold down both HOME and POWER ON/OFF button until the screen goes black, keep them pressed down for 2 more seconds and then release the POWER button only while holding down the HOME button for 10 more seconds.
iTunes will detect the phone i DFU mode and you have the option to restore to the original firmware og your choice.
went back to windows and restored my messed up iphone to 2.0 everything is locked.
I tried again for the second time, another pineapple loop.

However I tried the following:
I downloaded a prebuild iPhone 3G ipsw file from piratebay and used the DFU to restore.
I DID NOT go into loop and booted up.
All is fine EXCEPT I get no carrier so it is like an iphone Touch :(
So I am not sure what the difference between my own build and the downloaded build is.
I am still trying to figure it out :)
Restored in normal restore mode (no need for DFU) et voila!
First DFU is not the itunes logo + usb. DFU mode shows nothing.
But iTunes will recognize it. I connected my iPod in DFU mode. I removed the steps listed in update 3. **Make sure you do it in your OWN USER directory, not only the system directory!!
Then it was smooth sailings, i didn't get the U FAIL image again. and instead got the step by step from Pwnagetool.

nothing is suppose to be on the screen, nor should it be powered on.
iTunes will recognize it in recovery mode.
to get to dfu. from your home screen. hold down power + home for 7-9 seconds. then let go of just the power and keep pressing home.
nothing should happen, besides iTunes popping up.
or you just go to Macintosh HD, Users, your usrname, Library, iTunes. and make dir.

One question though, when running this - I select iPhone and browse for the ipsw package, I have both iPhone1,1_2.0_5A345_Restore.ipsw & iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw and the tool reports that they are both the wrong package. Running on PPC 10.5.4.

That error happens similarly when choosing the firmware 1.1.4 or more older version.
Of course, firmware 1.1.4 is Apple OFFICIAL fw.

Downloading this to my windows machine and pulling it over to one of my macs tomorrow to check out the interface =)
I had the same error however somehow it seems to now be working. not sure how long this will take.
A big bear folder just appeared asked me to enter a password and closed. Still seems to be working.
Once complete:
it will ask you if you have pwned your phone before, i clicked NO.
You then have to put your phone into DFU mode, which it kindly guides you through (thanks guys as i actually forgot).
Once this is done the newly compiled firmware should appear on your desktop.
When iTunes is opened, restore (holding OPTION) and navigate to your custom firmware.
RESTORE and Voila all should be Peachy.

"no firmware bundle found" message after i select my iphone, i dled the latest 2,0 .ipsw file and when i do the "select file" from expert mode it says "wrong firmware bundle selected" wtf

2) Turn it off while plugged in.
3) Press and hold the Home button and then press and hold the power button.
4) After about 3-5 seconds, let go of the Power button but keep holding the home button.
5) Your screen should turn on and eventually show the iTunes logo

First get the bootloader files... links can be found in other comments on this page. (BL-39.bin and BL-46.bin)
Connect iphone to Mac > Click Restore button > ipsw file starts downloading > Disconnect iPhone while downloading > When downloading is done open PwnageTool 2.0 and follow instructions from there.
(I'm not done upon writing this comment, so i hope it works...)

Doesn't seem to work with the iPhone (classic) selected. The 3G option finds and uses the 2.0 firmware build 347, but the classic iPhone option does not see build 347, and gives me an error if I try to select it. I'm downloading 345 right now.

I've got an iMac G5 Tiger and I'm not able to launch the app...
No problems encountered. A little disappointed that Installer.app not supported (yet). However am well aware that the dev-team don't write that code. And that most of the old 1.*.* firmware a aren't compatible with 2.0 yet anyway.
Cydia installed, but same deal on apps other than system tools.
This will come, I am sure.
I use ATT, so didn't need to activate or BootNeuter. When running this set up, just click on Expert Mode. Deselect theboxes for activation and boot neuter. Then proceed.
I have the bootloader bin files on my computer in the same directory as the Pawnage App. But couldn't locate.

iPod touch 8GB, on 2.0, I clicked "no" when it asked if I had pwned before, said it failed to enter DFU mode, then I option-clicked the firmware in iTunes, and the finished "Extracting software" and then gave me an unknown error, -6. Now I can't even restore to the normal firmware without it giving me that error!! HELP!!!

How do I go about using that screen to enter DFU mode?
I also got the "Cannot enter DFU mode, get a Zune" message, so I just closed the app and put my iphone in recovery mode and connect it to iTunes. When in iTunes, I clicked "Restore" while pressing the "option" key and selected the IPSW PwnageTool built.
Then I just sat back and waited for the restore to complete. =D

You are champions. You are clever and deserve all the best in your lives. After having my iPhone bricked once I updated to v.2.0 (from 1.1.4), and since I use Virgin in Australia, the "unauthorised" carrier, I was not able to power up the iPhone and not even use it as an MP3 player. Although I love Apple for their design and cleverness, I hate them for becoming too greedy and wanting to force customers to a particular carrier only, so they can get a bit of the profit from people's calls. Telstra (iPhone reseller No.1 in Aus) is a rip-off big time (everybody knows this, except them), Vodafone (iPhone reseller No.2) doesn't have the coverage where I work, Optus (iPhone reseller No.3) doesn't have the deals like Virgin (who are not selling iPhone (yet)). And I am not a criminal, I bought my iPhone last year (long before it came to Australia) and certainly I had to order it unlocked to use it here. I paid for it with my hard earned money, and I was very upset when my iPhone bricked completely with the update to v.2.0. Dev Tem guys, you returned my phone today with so many important numbers and calendar appointments, and you did it for free.
Your PWnage tool is so clever, and complete, that I had my phone recovered within half an hour or so, even if I did not have the bootloader and what not.
The PWnage made everything so easy, so I rebuilt my own installation package and I am nor running v.2.0.
I already paid 23 Pounds three days ago to some wankers at (iphoneunlocking.org.uk) for their software that didn't work. Not only it didn;t work, they never respond, although they guarantee your money back.
To all possible unlockers that found themselves in a similar situation as myself - DO NOT USE the iphoneunlocking.org.uk - THEIR SOFTWARE DOESN'T WORK.
And one last helping point to some that may end up needing bootloader 3.9 and 4.6, you can find them here (http://iphonefreakz.com/iphone-firmwares/).
Dear Dev Team guys I want to pay for your trouble, although I know you did it for free.
I will feel better if at least I pay you the same amount as I paid to the above mentioned wankers, please give me details how can I do that (my e-mail address is visible to you).

Phone was originally unlocked with iphonesimfree and on 1.1.4. and the optus network in australia
created IPSW with pwnage tool, restored using this and now phone is unactivated and locked.

i think we _really_ messed up... i can't even revert it to a 1.1.1 via itunes 7.7...
trying to do that now with itunes 7.6.2 though, hopefully that will work to at least get it back to a functional state
I tried to get the phone into dfu then restore with the ipsw that pwnage tool made but it wouldn't work with itunes ('unknown error)

Just a couple of things. Put the phone into recovery before starting PWnage i have found to work fine,
Also i initially did a simple process of creating firmware but it did not activate the phone. I then went back and did an advanced firmware creation and it worked peachy!!!

The right version for 1st generation iPhone is: iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (!!!)
NOT THE iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (--> this one is intended for the 3G Phones)
So get the right ipsw and evrything just works fine!

I got it from the mirror and put it a torrent up on pirate bay. Seeding right now.
I tried update and got error 5 from iTunes. Apparently something with my version of iTunes. Put my phone in recovery mode. I restored to custom 1.1.4 I had, reintalled iTunes 7.7 and I'm updating as I type.
Is there any step by step installation guide yet

Make sure you are in DFU mode properly?
DFU= hold power/home for 7 seconds, screen goes blank, wait 2 seconds with blank screen and release power button, keep holding the home button until itunes recognises the phone as in recovery mode and the phone has a blank screen

I installed apple's 2.0 software on it, and when the itunes activation obviously failed, used pwnagetool on it. It creates the .ipsw but then says "failed to enter DFU mode"...when it is in DFU mode the entire time. In log it says: "Failed to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw file."
I also tried to put it into recovery mode and to use itunes to restore the custom .ipsw, but this also fails, itunes tells me: "the iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (6)".
After all this testing and all the hype we get this? Very disappointed.

my 3G iPhone got bricked. I'm not stupid.. I did everything as the app said.. did not use bootneuter or anything dangerous, but I can't get any signal.. tried rebooting, airplane-mode, sim-card switch, but still no signal.

A quicker way if you are good at the shell prompt is to use Cydia to install openssh, log into your iPhone, and do "rm -rf /var/root/Library/Lockdown" and then reboot your iPhone.
I've tried:
* rebooting several times
* restoring the P-ram
* restoring permissions
* deleted, re-downloaded
* different internet connections
It just keeps on bouncing in the dock...
Pleaaase! It'd truly make my day.

After creating the custom firmware with Pwnage Tool, I restored through iTunes with no errors, however even if my phone has operator signal, IT IS NOT ACTIVATED.

I backed up my 2G phone before the procedure (phone was previously pwned at 1.1.4) and all worked fine, but when you go for the re-sync of music from iTunes, you get no dialogue from iTunes. Solution - deselect one of the playlists and hit apply. Then it does....

As to those wondering about the 3.9 thingy, i had the same problem...just download the files at http://www.enkrypted.com/bootloaders.rar
Then in pwnage choose browse, and select the bootloader file (in my case 4.6)
