But, was that done on a previously locked phone? Some are sold unlocked. I understand some Portuguese, and he's showing that an "unlocked" 3G works on a non-official Brazilian carrier, but not showing or explaining any of the process how it was done.

I figured it out though, the end time of the timer is actually the MD5 key to unlocking the phone. By the DevTeam releasing this they're obviously challenging anyone else to release a tool before they do which means they must be super duper ultra close to releasing pwnge 2.0.

I also detected that there is a pixel level watermark in the image that says "You're all fools, this counter means nothing but you seemed to be getting bored... jerk off on this a while".

wow, it's amazing how people are interpreting what they want from a non-specific post. it looks to be a post just making fun of GeoHotz and his antics. Great example of humor with class. the counter probably matched his so you got the association more. Probably now it counts up cause of too many people thinking it was a release time. All it was was a post getting people to look at a web site that doesnt say anything about being associated with the iPhone dev team. But then again, who knows, i could be wrong. Funny stuff though and nice work with all the small details, like the cracked open iPhone with screwdriver.

So....there still isn't an actual release date yet? K whatever at this point I don't care. I'll use whatever geohot releases so I can get my 2.0 fix and if it's buggy I'll at least have the 2.0 craze out of my system and I can fix my phone whenever you guys feel like releasing your app. It's what I did with ziphone.

Hmm ok I don't believe I was trying to provoke them into doing something they obviously are not going to do. Lets get some facts strait here and we'll work from there.

Fact #1- we have no idea when they are going to release their app.
Fact #2- the iboot exploit, which is what is what allows pwnage to do what it does has been leaked to geohot which leads me to....
Fact #3- Geohot has an actual countdown timer on his yiphone website and yeah who really knows if he'll have a workable app by then, but at least it's some sort of a timetable.

I am not loyal to any one group, company, or program. I have things I want, and I try my best to use the resources around me to get those things. If it comes from the dev team that rocks. If it comes from comes from geohot, that's cool too. Hell if all of a sudden Nokia came out with a perfect clone of the iphone including app store but completely unlocked I'd be for that too. I don't really care.

iphone 2.0 will eventually be unlocked. People will always find a way. Maybe it will come from the dev team. Maybe from zibri or geohot. Maybe some guy from left field that no one has ever heard of will unlock it. Why do I need to sit patiently and wait for one particular group to get a job done if another one can do it faster even if it's not at user friendly? When it happens it happens and I'll be there to download the hack from whoever gets it out first and right now that seems to be Geohot.

Oh and one more thing because you pinched a nerve with me. I highly doubt whatever geohot churns out will be even remotely able to hold a candle to what will come from the dev team. They are really talented guys. In the end though I just want something quick that will get me to be able to use the iphone 2.0 software. I know the risk that entails, but that is my decision to make. So get off your little high horse thinking I was trying to insult the dev team or pressure them because I am not. They are really talented guys and I have been grateful for all the different times they have allowed me to upgrade my phone with their software. Still doesn't change the fact that i'm not their demographic for the app they are making. I don't care about a gui interface. I don't mind dipping into the console a little bit. I consider myself smart enough to follow directions, however complicated, so I can get my phone upgraded.

And I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of people out there also agree. Most of us users don't have brand loyalty towards the dev team. We want the first avalialbe working app, and we don't care who we get it from. If this geo whoever guy releases first, it's where we'll all go, and he'll monopolize it since 90% of the press/blogsphere will jump right on it, making it the "official" iphone jailbreak/unlocking tool.

I want the good guy to win, but I want my app more. Someone tell me I'm wrong.

As much as it seems, I totally agree, we all want that unlock, but however I would rather done by the Dev Team, but like the first post stated, I WANT TO UNLOCK MY PHONE, inturn means I will use what I want, doesn't make me a bad fan, infact I have been a fan of the Dev Team for quite sometime, but I have my needs and if I can get it I can garantee most of the people will do it too, its just like a kid when yu liked your favourite candy bar and they were sold out, I felt I needed a crave for candy bar I will by another brand, thats what is so good about opp. and choices. So don't be a hater on someone who states there opinion, again that there choice. Infact I will try Dev, Geohot and Zibri gui and state my opinion on whats better for my liking.......

Spoken like a true gentleman. :p A large number of people will rush to do anything accepting the risks. But, most people are not mavericks. Most, and I repeat most, users (your average person) will wait for a fool-proof one-click method or look for someone to do it for them after it's been proven reliable. Personally, out of respect to the dev team, I will wait until PwnageTool 2.0 is released. I don't care how long it takes, 1.1.4 is doing fine at the moment anyway.

We have a lot to thank these guys for, and using their tool exclusively is a great way to show that support since they wont accept donations.

However I don't think well be waiting that much longer anyway so there really is no point discussing this.

2Gs sold: ~6 million
Conservative number JB and/or unlock: 2 million
(many reports say up to 40%, 2.4 million)
"Most" of 2 million = more than 1 million

1 million users did not rush to do the first questionable hack to their phone. Check this blog for the earlier post "Wow" showing the numbers that downloaded the Pwnage video.

The rest kidshoalin said perfectly for me...there is a group of "kids" who want what they want when they want it and will look for a way to get it, accepting consequences. Thing is...they don't represent the majority, or most.

No. When I write something, I think about what I am writing. I don't understand why people write such gibberish all the time. I mean, look at 90% of the comments on this blog. They ask the same questions over and over again, make irrelevant statements, misspell every other word and appear to know nothing about punctuation. It's not a matter of being the "grammar police", it's about wanting to appear intelligent and being baffled why other people don't feel the same way. And no, I've never tried to write in a foreign language just like I don't try to read foreign languages. If I went to some site that was in Spanish, I'd go somewhere else, not try to piece together a comment in the hopes of saying something no one cares about. I think they entered the wrong end time. (Hence why the counter is counting up, instead of down)
They javascript function they used, calculates time by what is known as "Epoch"-time. That's the amount of seconds (browsers use milliseconds) since January 1st 1970.

Basically what the page does, is constantly subtract the current time from the end time. (A future time is always bigger then en current of past time, seeing as it will be longer since 1970.)
So if the end time would be correct, we would indeed have a countdown clock.

But someone messed up entering the equation to set the end time. It's currently set to "Fri Mar 29 1974 08:45:36 GMT+0100 (CET)", hence why the countdown clock is broken.

The JavaScript was copied and pasted from http://yiphone.org/ but I think the countdown was deliberately messed up as to avoid actually giving an exact time.

Geohots countdown ends tomorrow at 4PM UTC. So I'm guessing they will release before then as he has threatened to release the source code otherwise.

Tryy change your PCs date or time and you see the numbers change right away.
for thouse thinking "hey maybe i can change my pc date so the counter becomes positive again"

So according to some of the comments here, the counter will stop when it hits -133,775,136. This is because, according to the pages source, the end time is: 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 3 * 42 227 * 11 which equals, 133 775 136. At the rate that the counter goes, it may take a few hours, maybe more. However, I personally don't think the counter is the release date at all. All it is, probably, is a spoof of yphone, and a pretty good one at that. So I'm just saying, it will stop at 133 775 136 or -133 775 136 ( I think ), but don't expect much to happen.

You guys are so wrong. I did some research and the timeer on "ihazsupper.com" is counting the miliseconds from the beginning of the Unix epoch --> See Wikipedia: 1970.
Since the iPhone is based on a slimmed down Version of Mac OS X and Mac OS X is based on Unix this would totally make sense.
Therefore it is not a timer counting towards anything and it certainly is not a mistake. Actually, when you add the number in the javascript up, you get 133775136 where the first 4 digits spell LEET or Elite in Leet-Language, a language, which is often used by hackers and other knowladgable computer-freaks to jokingly or sometimes seriously say/show that they are the top of the foodchain, the masters, practically the elite.

So stop bothering them, its not a Timer, it is not a mistake, this is their way of doing a persiflage on "The Last Super", with Jesus being Steve Wozniak (who is probably in this picture, because he is totally supportive of hacking iPhones and even did this on TV) and time this time beginning at the beginning of the Unix epoch, instead of Jesus' birth.
Time will go continue to go by and iPhone Dev Team will release the tool when time is right.

I think the script on the ihazsupper.com page has a bug in it.

It looks to me like the intention was to provide count down timer. But since the timer in the script just gets the current date then subtracts a constant value, all the number is indicating is the milliseconds since Jan 1 1970 minus the constant.

If you consider the constant as milliseconds and add that to the approximate post date & time of this post you get Wed, July 16, 2 AM. Since I don't see the timezone, and really don't feel like looking for it there's a +- 0 to 12 hours potentially in that number.

Secondly, the constant number in the script is a combination of factors of 133775136. 42227 is prime. My guess is that it was someone's attempt at obscuring the number they were using.

The only potentially useful value is the constant. Which, if indicates milliseconds, might indicate the estimated release date for the 2.0 firmware crack. Keep your hopes up for Wednesday, July 16, 2008 2:16 AM

I have no idea why they are showing Steve Wozniak in the picture, but I doubt he's part of the project.

If Woz were part of the project, then I guess we can assume he wants it to be a secret, right? (otherwise, he wouldn't have kept it a secret until now). I can't see someone from the dev team 'leaking' the fact that Woz is part of the team (via the picture) if it is in fact a secret.

I suppose it's *possible* that this is Woz's way of letting people know about it, but it seems very unlikely to me.

More likely (IMO): the dev team hackers look up to Woz as one of the earliest of hackers, hence his position as 'Jesus'.

Then use iTunes 7.5/7.6.2 and Restore it to 1.1.4 using DFU Mode again...

When its in DFU mode, the screen is blank no image k to get into it hold home and sleep buttons till it goes off then release the sleep button and keep holding the home button till itunes detects it (THE SCREEN SHOULD BE BLANK IF NOT ITS IN RECOVERY MODE)

once you've restored it to 1.1.4 it will still have the 2.0 baseband so you have to use KiPhone as mentaioned in my previous post to erase it, once its been erased restore it to 1.1.4 again, by the way when restoring it to 1.1.4 after downgrading it to 2.0 (5A258f) beta you have to use the older version of itunes if not you will get the 1600/1601 error...

Any way this number has come up alot i think it could be a dig at Zibri (go dev team the guy is a tool). steganography is the art and science of writing hidden messages in such a way that no one apart from the sender and intended recipient even realizes there is a hidden message. So the so called countdown might mean nothing. the numbers are defiantly adding more on so it is becoming more negative. It will never reach zero that's what i have seen so i am even more confused than ever. But fun to try and figure out. thanks dev team

Just a reminder to all people out there that try to define a certain time.
For some people: You can't say "The timer ens 5 PM" since 5 PM is relevant to where you are.
For others: UTC (Universal Time) is ALWAYS given in 24 hour shape, in other words, you don't say "The timer ends 5 PM UTC" but rather "17.00 UTC".

This might seem as nothing to complain about, and it probably isn't either, but it bugs the hell out of me, who as a pilot works a lot with UTC etc.

And to those that use the UTC standard, you know that in summertime the UTC scale is one hour before London time due to daylight saving?

How about another Challenge?! If the Dev team do this as a hobby as stated it would be interesting to see if they would somehow be able to either incorporate the A2DP Bluetooth Profile so we could use Bluetooth stereo headphones or write a program capable of routing all audio via bluetooth to achieve the same. This would be very useful for me as I have bluetooth stereo headphones built into my motorcycle helmet. My HTC Kaiser has no problems with this and the iphone connects to the headset profile. So I'm assuming almighty apple have left this out on purpose. Would be cool to use with my Motorola s9's also. I personally am not worried about battery life because i have a mobile device charger built into my bike. ***And for those wonderiing I only have it turned on quietly.*** Thanks for listening anyway.. :)

Geohot's countdown - http://yiphone.org/ - goes down to zero. It's shown in Webdings (a symbol-based font). Just copy-paste it in Word and change the font to something that is readable, which will then give you a number like : 14042972.

As you can see, the countdown is very fast; it actually shows up to the 1000th of a second. Take away the last 3 numbers from the right and you'll have something shown in seconds : 14043.

Divide this by 60 to get the countdown in minutes, and another 60 to get it in hours : 3.9

=> Geohot's ultimatum ends in a little under 4 hours.

HOWEVER - The Dev Team's countdown grows in negative - meaning it gets further from zero - thus never reaching it.


Time will tell ... (not too much time though, please ...)

they are taking the piss. the counter is an epoch timestamp and the yiphone counter ends in roughly 2 hours from now presumably to suggest thats when it will be released. however with dev team, their counter is in the negative which means "0" has been and gone as if to suggest their software has been ready for ages. they have stated it is ready more or less but they are just testing it. so yeah basically the counter means nothing. they are just sticking it up the mask of zorro basically.

oh and i dunno why people are saying steve is being blown. the original depiction of the last supper suggests thats st. john SLEEPING, but hey, whatever works for you i guess...

these guys understand to teese their audience. I've used the time to search the net and i found some pages where members of the dev-team had been, even with zbri, exchanging information. Personaly me, i think that it does not matter who will bring the hack that IPOD, IPHONE or IPHONE 3g will be free with the new software. But to play like Apple to announce a product is not funny. If they need time - they should say it and should tell us an estimate release date. i know it is their private time wchich is used to program this tool. i say thank you for this but playing with the user waiting for the hack is like a small boy who says: i have something what you don't have - perhaps ypu will get it too.

Has anyone tried this unlock for their 2G iphone running 2.0?

Guys,
Iphone-dev or dev-team has no obligation to release nothing. They don't care if the site visit goes to 0 % because they own the domain, they are hosting the site (and the bandwidth! which costs a lot of money) for FUN! They owe nothing.
So keep your mouth closed and wait. I prefer to believe that Geohot will release NOTHING and will be aligned to Devteam.

If you are becoming nuts, go have a sleep, or go shopping stuff like that and change your hosts file for redirecting iphone-dev page to 127.0.0.1.

I would like to differ on this, legally they have no obligation morally they do, the fact that they promised an unlock to the people means they have a moral obligation towards the people.

They blame GeoHot for his media attention and yet they are doing the same thing, I am pretty sure this web blog is the most active webpage in iPhone land at the moment, they release bits of information, no release date and when the viewers get a bit nervous they release another video. This is how Apple creates their hypes, so are they trying to do the same thing?

I don't get why you start about this website, its mainly text based, the video's are hosted somewhere else and in so it uses the minimal bandwidth possible, so don't make it look like they are paying fortunes for this blog because they are not.

They were hosting the first video on the website, and all the images is hosted on the website.
Wiki is also hosted on the website. So if there is 800 - 1000 users per minute, you can waste huge bandwidth on this.
There is no big box behind iphone-Dev, like Akamai, G4, level3, so they don't have something huge.
By the way, the wiki and blog is not hosted on the same network.

All video's on the blog currently are hosted somewhere else, maybe they did host one themselves but not anymore, I don't really think the Wiki is suffering from the same amount of visitors as the blog, nothing is happening on the wiki anyway.

Images are stored locally in your cache, so even if you refreshed your browser a 1000 times during the last hour it will not download the images but use the ones in your cache.

So in the end it comes back to txt, because those 800 - 1000 users per minute are probably the same ones from the minute before and the minute before that one ...
