I love how people complain about not having their FREE unlock RIGHT NOW, but they would be the same people to moan and wail if it was release prematurely and caused problems. I've never seen such an ungrateful bunch in my life. This is FREE.
These are the same kind of people that get on open-source mailing lists and complain loudly that the free software they're trying to use doesn't have the exact feature that they need, and in the next breath say "but I don't know anything about coding, so somebody else needs to do this."
In short, shut up and wait, and be happy for what you get. I'm super stoked to see such a polished piece of software...

We in Australia have waited for a lot longer than a few days for access to iPhones, so we are grateful to wait. With the arrival of the 3G here we see the games and restrictions the phone carriers place on consumers who are so excited to see it arrive, like me. So it makes us even more determined to not be sucked in, so again we are grateful to wait. For those who are lucky like me to have imported a 2G iPhone and have it unlocked because of the hard work of the Dev Team, I am grateful. Thx Dev Team, your legends, from an Aussie !!!

The reason must be they still want to test it out and give us a completed upgrade, however having to wait makes me feel really bad for I have a bricked 2.0 phone.
This is the only piece of information which allowed me to successfully downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4 (baseband included). Then a restore from backup got everything back (except the custom apps). All other webpages are misleading or too vague. So, here it is: http://iphone-repair.blogspot.com/

It shows the UI which is the same. The tool works with 2.0 just fine, we showed screenshots of that yesterday. Jailbroken, cydia installed and working just fine alongside Appstore etc.

1) The screenshots are just screenshots. And they show the applestore icon. It doesn NOT show that it works.
2) The video shows that the pwnage tool FAILED. Why wouldn't you post a video of actually working?

Well, the firmware used in the video is old. It is not the firmware release today (or yesterday). So this video could have been posted, like, days ago.

I'm thinking back to the posts/conversations a bunch of us had about iphoneunlockuk. About how it provided simple one stop solution etc. Just make a website, put one link in white on a black background. That link downloads this program. I'm certain this program looks so easy, I'm going to get drunk just to prove how easy it is (i'm THAT confident i'll jailbreak/unlock my phone).

Tell us what is wrong, release source code, have people help you debug it. But no, instead we have this closed off BS that is not good for the scene at all. Whoo hoo! A nicely polished App... but... um... am I missing something or does it not actually show it working? Specifically it doesn't show installing 2.0 nor Neutering 2.0, etc. which makes me a bit nervous.
Also in the terms of the app what if you have a orginal iPhone with 2.0 installed? I was because it seems to suggest there is one method for phones purcahsed before July 11th (original phones regardless of firmware) and phones purchased after July 11th (3G, obviously 2.0/1.2 firmware)... So where does that leave original iPhone upgrade to 2.0?

The video pretty much nothing. Winpwn can do all of that with installer. Plus, Pwnagetool is used to jailbreak and activate. Bootneuter is the one for unlocking. This video is showing how to jailbreak 1.1.4. We don't need to jailbreak 1.1.4 because PwnTool1.1 can do that already. 3G and 2G iphone softwares are almost the same except that the software will have a baseband for 3G install on 3G iphone. So as my understanding, if it works on 3G, it should work on 2G or backward (I am talking about jailbreak and activate, not unlocking). So the video doesn't prove anything. What a waste of time, Lolz!

Based on the video- it appears that 2G phones won't be able to be unlocked with pwnagetool 2.0. If you look at the instructions on selecting the firmware- it says to select 1.1.4 if you purchase an iphone BEFORE today! So when will us first gen phone buyers be able to unlock and upgrade to 2.0?!

I have a 1.1.3 OOTB iPhone 2.5G, unlocked by ZiPhone 2.0 (or something). Do I need to go to 1.1.4 before I can get any further, or is it more of an "older than 2.0" thing? I have been assuming that I would just be about to follow the 1.1.4 pwnage process. Like a chump I've updated to iTunes 7.7 (Mac user) and am worried I won't be able to restore 1.1.4.
No idea where the right place to ask for will be to ask.

Word to the wise: there'd be a lot less abuse if instead of posting constant teasers, there were some honest updates of progress too. Even if it's just, "We really want to release 1.2 to go with the new firmware, not just a patched up version of 1.1 - hold tight, it'll only be a few days." Sure, post the teasers too, but news would be nice.
There must be nothing worse than having a $200 paperweight, while everyone else rubs their new toys in your face, and coming here to see if there's a release to make it usable, and finding... no news at all, just a couple of posts that seem to be private jokes at your expense...
It's a shame that people are getting mad at you, because you've obviously done good work. Don't spoil it by acting like nobs. 2¢.

The update addresses the question about whether it works with 1st gen phones upgrade to 2.0 (it does). As they indicate, the text is placeholder text.
As for the complaints about the delay -- I am sure they were able to test the application without having all of the UI and nice packaging in place and the ability not to just crash when unforseen issues come up. As someone who works for a commercial software company and knows the amount of testing and packaging that goes into "completed" products (many man months), a weekend (when most of us are off work) seems pretty quick to me.
They are developing a product that non-technical users can use -- if you don't want to wait, you can always command line in (or something) and pwn it yourself; and you don't have to package it up or build a dummy-proof UI.

don't you think for a second they are holding back to refine the tool?? talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
from looking around there seem to be different ipsw's that are labeled 5A347 going around, there is a iPhone1.1_2.0_5A347_Restore file (supposedly the first leak, and then there is a iPhone1.2_2.0_5A347_Restore file (works on first gen and second gen) and finally a iPhone1.2g_2.0_5A347_Restore (that works on 3G only)
and the same for the iPod touch.. I have the iPod1.1_2.0_5A345_Restore installed and there are little problems with it, and its not even jailbroken, and today i downloaded iPod1.2_2.0_5A347, so there are many things to account for, the least of which is the GUI, which is pretty easy for them to adjust, the delay is refinement.
cause unlike others they will service their product after, so they are trying to get it right the first time, so the FREE tech support is easier.

I'm amazed to see that there is already a tool created to unlock the phone! When the bricking started (way back when, almost year already, sheesh) it felt like forever until someone came out with tools for fixing that. I think that this is really great and that regardless of their presentation on their website its very impolite/wrong/dickheaded/fuckfaced to write comments condemning them because YOU cant have the software.
Annoyed mentioned that they should release the code open source if they were having any trouble. Have you tried contacting them and offering your services or are you hoping that someone will have the answer. Secondly, if they released the code do you know what to do with it? Do you have the SDK? I just think its really lame you are coming on their website and spouting nonsense. I guess the only commendable thing i could say about you is that you never said the oh so popular phrase "Fail". I may have missed it though...

Worried. Just read in the New York Times about users simply upgrading their firmware on old hardware: "The iPhone now requires an authentication step in which the phone must connect to Apple servers through its iTunes software application before it will function again after a software upgrade."

I know this is a great tool, released for free, but you should pay more attention to the GUI: it's simply ugly. Please, make it OS X "like": this seem a crappy windows application ported on the Mac.

You guys know with so much whining and with over 300 comments on each post the Team makes, they have to spend time AWAY FROM finishing your precious app to sift through generic bitching and see if anyone is asking a serious question.
Do understand, THE LONGER YOU COMPLAIN, THE LONGER IT WILL TAKE for the team to release your app.

WOW!!! Wow, wow, OMFG wow. I was never interested in the 1st gen iphone but recently had a serious falling out with my current wireless provider. I'll be switching to ATT and picking up a 3G iphone this weekend and I'm pretty excited about it. I have been watching all the blogs on the 'legit' software for the phone, itunes, mobile.me etc etc and had almost decided i was not interested in jailbreaking. I am so glad i looked at this post and video. Even if I never decide (still on the fence) to jailbreak, please let me say you guys are awesome. u guys are amazing. u not only wrote a awesome unlock tool but also a easy to use/ pretty GUI for it. apple should hire u guys. but hopefully not to prevent u guys from working on iphone programs like this. :)
So I ve read in multiple places that an unlocked iphone 3g will not be able to take advantage of the quasi 3g network that tmobile provides due to att's 3g network operating on a different frequency than tmobiles...(at least here in the US) However, there have been several folks that have mentioned that the hardware may actually be capable of broadcasting on all the carriers frequencies and that it is only a software issue that needs to be tweaked in order for the 3g to successfully work on tmobiles.
So my question is, during your extensive reverse engineering of the 2.0 software, did you guys come across anything that may look like a lead that may eventually allow the dev team to alter the transmission frequency and allow us to take advantage of tmobiles 3g?

Its normal :-) Well its soon 9am in the morning here in swiss and i will have to attend again costumer and listen to the "why dont you have any iphone 3g on stock?" and i really wisht i could answer "what do you think? because we use them under ouer Tables and Chairs so they dont shake anymore?! its sold out like its writen everywhere!" I did my workout training, read a book and had sex with my girlfriend while I was waitng :D No regrets that I could have wasted my time by clicking refresh all the day. So from a review I read at another Apple site (Hardmac I think it was), it seem the new iPhone 3G is Locked to the carrier, but not to the SIM. In other words, a prepaid card from the same carrier will work just fine. Being that activation is a problem to leave the store WITH the phone, I hadn't really given it much thought.
However, it occured to me. Could it be that this is a function of version 2.0 of the firmware? In other words, by upgrading my 1st gen iphone to the stock version 2.0 if I already have a SIM from O2 (but not an iphone sim, a prepaid) would I have a fully functional iPhone?Anyone tried to see if this works without having to activate, jailbreak, unlock if you already have a SIM from an official carrier?

wow that was a great costumer i had now. i can laugh me to death. He asked me if we could update his first gen iphone to a 3G whit the new software update. Well... i... we... we cant update the Hardware of your iphone whit only a software update. But it wasnt done! he was thinking im tricking him! He yelled around its only money making s**t and i should be so kind to offer the service we have to do. After amost 1h30 i became irritated and told him "we are not wizzards and cant do magics to do this and besides first gen iphones dosnt exist in swiss. So its jailbroken and out of warranty". and then it startet from beginning... he wantet the shop manager. Too bad im the deputy manager. ater he knew this he was a whole different person and leaved quietly. - the end -
once downloaded remove the .zip at the end of the file!!
if you run the iphone 3G firmware on the iphone 2G it will be slow and unresponsive! once corrected everything will be faster as 1.1.4!!!!!!!

Gee, I wonder how these complainers would have coped upon the release of the first iphone if they were to find out that someone was working on unlocking it only to have waited 3 months. Just think about that next time you guys complain. imagine it taking three more months. sure they have already unlocked it but they dont want to run the risk of ruining your phone due to poor use of their tools. They are making it foolproof for you so be grateful. My town in aus was skipped on 3G launch day and i have to wait as well to upgrade my iphone. but that doesnt mean i should go and give the designers a whole heap of crap

Does pwnage 2.01 also unlock the iphone 3g, or only jailbreak it? From the many posts and blogs I read, pwnage will only allow 'legit' (ie:AT&T) customers to make calls.
If you do not have a legit SIM the iphone 3g will not recognize the wireless carriers network after pwning the device.
Can someone please confirm this or clarify on this topic?

Gizmodo had an earlier, buggy user unfriendly tool that was shown to them by a DevTeam member. They used this to activate and jailbreak the 345 version of the iPhone software, the 345 is near as damn it the version that Apple shipped on the 11th. We want an easy life so we don't ship tools that will break phones. We also have some good reasons for holding off with the release.

I pretty much figured that. I know that we have to give you guys time. We all pretty much know that. Its just hard to have your google reader chock full of iphone 3g and firmware 2.0 crap, while the blog says that the tool is ready and still have to wait without explanation. You have your reasons, fine. Just know that this is torture for the entire world. The eyes of the world were on the devs today with all the hype and what not and there was no delivery. I'm not mad, just disappointed.
Still some questions linger...
Why no release date? Why no explanation as to why there is a wait if it was ready? Why the riddles all day? Why are you not accepting donations? We want to give you money. (mainly so we can bitch and moan about how we donated and its not delivered.)

Why no release date? - Because the tool is being finished, and erm, there was a fairly big product launch from Apple that kinda grabbed our attention.
Why no explanation as to why there is a wait if it was ready? - Read our earlier post regarding tests.

here's the choices. 1) they release an app they they feel is incomplete/untested fully. Becuase of this, it has a chance of bricking your phone. If it does brick people's phones, the dev people have an angry mob on their hands.
2) they take the time, make if as user-proof as possible, and make sure as much as they can it won't screw up the hardware. If someone's phone doesnt upgrade correctly, it's probaly something with the user's setup, not the iPwn software. The number of angry users is reduced to the people who probably should've learned more about what's happening in the first place.
I personally on the user side prefer choice 1, as i don't want my iPhone to become an expensive paperweight, don't you? If i was one of the devs, i'd rather have people be antsy and glad at the end result instead caving in and have a bunch of people trashing your name on the 'net because of 'buggy software' that those same people bitched to get rushed out in the first place.

I agree with this. It wouldn't really bother me that the app isn't coming out this weekend, except I kept hearing from the dev team and from bloggers in contact with the dev team that the new tool would be out when the new firmware was out. Then the new firmware comes out, first unofficially and then officially, and nothing from the dev team at all. Now the release date is "soon, but not this weekend."
In the future, I would hope that the dev team, who has billed itself as the one and only official unofficial iphone hacking group, will be more realistic about their release dates. You've got an army of people hitting refresh over and over again, because they are excited, because the dev team made them excited in the first place.
I'm not attacking the dev team. I appreciate the work that the dev team has done for this community, as does everyone else posting here. I am, to reiterate, suggesting that they be more realistic about their release dates.

I understand your frustration but I don't agree. They're not a software company, and even software companies sometimes don't have specific deadlines and estimate release dates. Take RapidWeaver 4 for example, they revealed tiny little bits of info and people was like "OH MY GOD WHEN? WHEN?" but the devs gave no estimated release date until a month before it came out. Another example would be uTorrent, the Mac port doesn't have any deadline and constantly inquiring about it in the forums will result in a "when it's done".
If someone can't handle the wait he should just avoid the blog, and wait for PwnageTool to report that an update is available, or just wait for the news to hit the usual headlines (MacRumors, TUAW, MacNN or whatever). It's much less painful to just forget about it, be oblivious of every development until it finally arrives, then it will come as a sweet surprise and it will be ready.
Personally I followed everything becuase I don't mind the wait and I really enjoyed the little clues and tidbits (I love how everything fell in place in the end, the bubbles, the Harpo icon, the Einstein Icon, the hands telling how to enter Recovery Mode...) and I don't mind waiting as I didn't mind waiting for the original release and didn't mind to wait for Leopard to come out when it was delayed.
And it's not a lecture, it's a suggestion... I did this with RW4.0 because I couldn't take all the pressure, I just subscribed to the mailing list and forgot about it, after a while I received an update stating it was possible to enter the beta and that's how it went.
TL;DR: patience is a virtue.

They don't need public approval either, if someone follows the blog it's because he is interested in seeing what the Dev-team has to say.
Besides, all this recent updates are somewhat of the bits of information you'd like to see, yet it upsetted quite a lot of people. Sure it's not in-depth details of what's going on but besides, what good would lying bring to the dev-team?
They don't accept donations so they don't receive money from excited people. If they create anticipation don't deliver in time their reputation would be ruined which is something they probably don't want. The last time they created anticipation they ended up delivering even if they first delayed it, so personally I don't see the problem.
Still, I'm probably not disappointed because I wasn't expecting it to be released so soon.

I honestly do not want to be seen as someone who is criticizing the quality of the dev team's work, as I am very appreciative of everything they have done.
It is, however, not surprising to see people that are disappointed by this news, as they have been hearing for days that this was going to be waiting for them.
The simple way to have avoided this would have been to let people know what was up, instead of keeping them in the dark.

Exactly, the blog was not meant to be filled with useful or in-depth information about the progress. The caption says "Blog - for some thoughts and interesting links".
Everybody knew that the dev-team was working on the new firmware, that's true but the blog actually told us they were close.
By the way we don't only know they have 3G Phones (three of them) but the testing on them went well. That is valuable information in my opinion, even if right now it's kind of a matter of faith.

according to the text in the video it looks like it will (they say select 2.* for iphone purchased after 11 july, and the only iphone they sell after 11th july are 3g one, you can no longer buy 2g ones other than from places like ebay) So even though the update says 2g, the wording in the video suggests 3g, can one of the dev team please clarify this?
And i wonder if adding custom logos is now easier in the new release, i.e. we dont have to have "proper" pngs of size less than 100kb etc etc, i wonder if we can use jpegs, gifs... and the pwnage tool will convert it for us?

Just a suggestion, if your delaying it because of trying to organize sets of mirrors so as not to kill your severs by 10,000,000 people all downloading at once, the very second their constant F5'ing shows them a download link.
Why not distribute via BitTorrent. The more people you have downloading (tons in this case) the more bandwidth you have, and since it is nothing illegal I know a lot of people would be willing to seed for while.
Then if the torrent slows down after a few days go back to traditional hosting.
On the other hand if that is NOT your reason for delaying, take as much time as you need to make sure it is perfect.

i would seed constantly if needed, partly because i love the fact that the dev team do this absolutely free and i know that there is huge demand for this, but also in order to get my ratio up on torrentleech, im a paid VIP member but i would still love to increase my ratio to a decent level.
Using torrents is the best way to get the app out there without having bandwidth problems on our own servers.

I know there is good reason and it doesnt matter to me, i dont even have an iphone anymore, i just still follow the iphone scene because i love to see how the dev team and other developers constantly manage to hack the security put in place by apple. I have decided to get a normal phone (still touchscreen) but with all the features the iphone doesnt have, the LG KF700. I plan to get a cheap iphone again sometime if i can just to use for fun, as i love all the hacking, and the applications available for the iphone.

Hi there! looking for a few days at the minimum possiblities to unlock and JB the 2.0 software of my Iphone bought in february 2008...I have tried some useless ways to unlock the phone...also with mine logical ways, but dint find any...aaarrrghh :) I think you are on the good way to make it done, and to make many ppl happier than they ever had been...there is a Q. if the PWNAGE 2.0 should JB also some Beta release of 2.0 FRMWR...i tried to hack with old one soft PWNAGE 1.1 (incl. 1.0) but it wrotes often errors... Me not a proffesional in this area of "hacking" so i didnt tried to use any terminal or smt like that, because i am affraid of, my iPhone should die! :) If you can help me a little pls give me a note... Hate to say it, but I agree.
The sum total of the childish posts of the last day or so could have been made like this:
- we have a working unlock/jailbreak for release #### of the 2.0 firmware, but we want to test it against a retail device. We will be heading out to stores tomorrow to buy a retail device to test and make sure things go as expected. - heading to the store this morning to pick up retail device - got device, checking our solution with it to make sure it's safe and works as expected - everything looks good, we will not be releasing right away as we want to spread to mirrors to ensure everybody has a good chance to download it once we release to the wild. thanks...
All of this cloak and dagger bs, and assembly of incomprehensible comments smacks of you giving yourselves a self congratulatory trip around the bases. I'm definitely thankful for the app, I used it the first time around.
But I figured they might treat us a little better than children. Really why all the silliness? They did not do this on their first release, and to be honest their original demeanor is what made me move away from the egotistical one that Zibri seems to exude in every post he makes. The dev team seem to be heading a bit in this 'hey look at us' direction...
The achievement of this software can stand on its' own, they don't need to grandstand. I think many here are ready to heap praise on them based on the the tool alone, so why not just quietly release as they did the first time, and the accolades will most likely flow in. Stop 'milking it'...

It is the silly little inside jokes that I could do without. That is what I meant by a quiet release. The first tool was delayed multiple times yes, but people seemed to be much more understanding when there was a clear adult like message as to why.
I'm done commenting, I've made my point. It is their software indeed, if they want to toy with people before releasing it, that is their prerogative...

I'm not upset at all by the delay, but I'm trying to convey some of the feelings other might have that I have seen on here. Some have been extremely arrogant, where others have stayed awake late into the night because they though something was coming soon...
It is the people that were waiting in hot anticipation in a respectful way that I feel bad for. Becuase I think a little bit more concrete background info might have saved some dashed hopes.

Listen here you are perfectly allowed to have fun. That's cool. What is not cool is when you meander your fans around for over half a day teasing them only to reveal that your app isn't coming out for at least 3 days. Be strait with us and we won't care about how much fun your having. I'm sure I would have found 3g kid to be funny as hell if I were just reading this to learn of some of y'alls adventures. Instead I sat at this computer 2.0 software downloaded and ready looking for some update on your status while I stared at some little twat with some marker on his face. Do you see the difference?
Fact is you guys made this seem like the app was 100% ready minus some little testing maybe on the 3g model (you weren't even specific on that) so I sat here and wasted my friday and yes I know that's my own fault but when you make it seem like the app would be there any second with your teasing screenshots and your little ploy with gizmodo, I found myself being drawn back time and time again in the hopes that maybe this refresh they would tell me something, anything!
12 hours. Thats how long it took you guys from when you let gizmodo reveal that you had unlocked 2.0 to when you finally revealed that the app wasn't coming until after the weekend.
Think about that next time. Just be strait. I'm very grateful for what you do but I don't like being fucked with.

To the people behind me get off your high horse. Part of the point of a comment system is to get some gripes off your chest. If the dev team or it's most loyal fans can't take some criticism then don't have a comment system in the first place. It's the right to free speech. I may not have it here in the US for much longer but as long as I do I like to use it.
As far as to pumpkin thank you for your good work. All I think the people that people that are still on this thing bitching want is some sign that you care about those of us that yes do get a little to enthusiastic and waste our times on stupid shit.

Who cares what coordinates the individual team members are occupying or the exact percentage of the compile.
Bottom line. The tool is not ready to be released. It may be ready, it might work great, but the TEAM IS NOT READY TO RELEASE THEIR WORK YET. All we can do is deal with it.
Your all very lucky that posting is all the "fun" that they are having. They could have more fun watching each of you all clammer for a release if they decide to keep the tool for themselves.

i think the major run for unlock s/w is over! since apple pretty much put a lid on the grey market, besides the iphone 3G's sold with prepaid cards, like in switzerland for €451 i think, there's no real supply for the grey market anymore....
this will make the unlocking a tiny niché of the total new iphones sold....
i for my part will continue to use my iphone 2G and i have no problem with slow GPRS since my german cell company, eplus, only has 3G or GPRS, no EDGE...
and since the WPS coverage in germany is getting better an d better, i have no real need for GPS right now, there's no real navigation software anyways!!! the geotagging works perfectly with WPS and the new XPS 2.0 in the iphone 3G is awesome, but i'm not that much outside of big cities and that means WPS totally cuts it for me!

no... you DON'T need it. Just force an install of the CORRECT 2.0 firmware. The download link people have been downloadeing was for the 3G firmware ( 1,2_2.0_) and not for the 2G iPhone (1,1_2.0_). Yet the correct one and install it and you will be fine until the pwnage tool is released

UPDATE: Please don’t pay close attention to the wording in the popups of PwnageTool as this is mainly placeholder text while we finalize everything for release. PwnageTool works with 2.0 upgraded 1st gen iPhones if they are activated or not.

Even though your wording is really offensive and I disagree with the general feeling of the post, I agree with you on one thing.
SUPPOSEDLY 2.0 has been unlocked since the early beta version. SUPPOSEDLY 2.0 works to the point that there are already videos about the fact that it works. SUPPOSEDLY someone at Gizmodo has been using the tool for quite some time.
Well... Either there is some sort of fun in letting people wait or these SUPPOSEDLY working tools are not working as they should.
Somebody mentioned that one cannot criticize something which is free. I disagree on that. Just because it is free it doesn't necessarily justify any behaviour. From what I have seen, from what I read on this blog post, I really ask myself what they are waiting for... And I wonder if it is all the way they say it is...

Also in the terms of the app what if you have a orginal iPhone with 2.0 installed? I was because it seems to suggest there is one method for phones purcahsed before July 11th (original phones regardless of firmware) and phones purchased after July 11th (3G, obviously 2.0/1.2 firmware)... So where does that leave original iPhone upgrade to 2.0?

Plus, Pwnagetool is used to jailbreak and activate. Bootneuter is the one for unlocking.
This video is showing how to jailbreak 1.1.4. We don't need to jailbreak 1.1.4 because PwnTool1.1 can do that already.
3G and 2G iphone softwares are almost the same except that the software will have a baseband for 3G install on 3G iphone. So as my understanding, if it works on 3G, it should work on 2G or backward (I am talking about jailbreak and activate, not unlocking).

As for the complaints about the delay -- I am sure they were able to test the application without having all of the UI and nice packaging in place and the ability not to just crash when unforseen issues come up. As someone who works for a commercial software company and knows the amount of testing and packaging that goes into "completed" products (many man months), a weekend (when most of us are off work) seems pretty quick to me.
They are developing a product that non-technical users can use -- if you don't want to wait, you can always command line in (or something) and pwn it yourself; and you don't have to package it up or build a dummy-proof UI.

-I have a First Gen iPhone with 1.1.4 right now. Im on a Country wich is getting the iPhone 3G "soon". If i want to try upgrade right now to test if my carrier works (cuz my carrier is listed on the firmware 2.0) and activate it. Doesnt mind if it does work or not, but... her eis the question, lol..: Can i use PwnageTool 2.0 since my iphone is already in Firmware 2.0 without any hitches or problems? Thanks a lot, thats my big doubt.

from looking around there seem to be different ipsw's that are labeled 5A347 going around, there is a iPhone1.1_2.0_5A347_Restore file (supposedly the first leak, and then there is a iPhone1.2_2.0_5A347_Restore file (works on first gen and second gen) and finally a iPhone1.2g_2.0_5A347_Restore (that works on 3G only)
and the same for the iPod touch.. I have the iPod1.1_2.0_5A345_Restore installed and there are little problems with it, and its not even jailbroken, and today i downloaded iPod1.2_2.0_5A347, so there are many things to account for, the least of which is the GUI, which is pretty easy for them to adjust, the delay is refinement.
cause unlike others they will service their product after, so they are trying to get it right the first time, so the FREE tech support is easier.
Annoyed mentioned that they should release the code open source if they were having any trouble. Have you tried contacting them and offering your services or are you hoping that someone will have the answer. Secondly, if they released the code do you know what to do with it? Do you have the SDK? I just think its really lame you are coming on their website and spouting nonsense. I guess the only commendable thing i could say about you is that you never said the oh so popular phrase "Fail". I may have missed it though...

I was never interested in the 1st gen iphone but recently had a serious falling out with my current wireless provider. I'll be switching to ATT and picking up a 3G iphone this weekend and I'm pretty excited about it. I have been watching all the blogs on the 'legit' software for the phone, itunes, mobile.me etc etc and had almost decided i was not interested in jailbreaking.
I am so glad i looked at this post and video. Even if I never decide (still on the fence) to jailbreak, please let me say you guys are awesome. That is a serious, polished, professional looking piece of software. I am very impressed. This is one of the cleanest, smoothest FREE software pieces I have ever seen.

However, it occured to me. Could it be that this is a function of version 2.0 of the firmware? In other words, by upgrading my 1st gen iphone to the stock version 2.0 if I already have a SIM from O2 (but not an iphone sim, a prepaid) would I have a fully functional iPhone?Anyone tried to see if this works without having to activate, jailbreak, unlock if you already have a SIM from an official carrier?

If I were these guys I'd probably say F*** this, I'm keeping this to myself and basically post like 1,000 youtube videos of what you guys aren't smart enough to do yourselves. So to the "be straight with me guy" with the hitting the refresh button for 12 hours thing, you are retarded, and really self centered, and to that one guy going on the cruise, please just shut up, I mean seriously, I can't believe you are asking for something that requires a lot of time to be done at your convenience, not the person who is doing it for you. I do have a question thought, when will you guys be releasing the technical info regarding the unlocking of 2.0 firmware on both Iphone classic, and iphone 3G? ... it would do a great deal for all of us to know and what to expect before hand. Right?

From the many posts and blogs I read, pwnage will only allow 'legit' (ie:AT&T) customers to make calls.
If you do not have a legit SIM the iphone 3g will not recognize the wireless carriers network after pwning the device.
Can someone please confirm this or clarify on this topic?

How about an iphone app that lets us all know the status of the upcoming pwnage tool. That would be awsome. It would also lighten the load on your servers.

Seems like this video was recorded days(weeks?) ago before final 2.0.
Just release that App already, instead of showing, telling, joking... blah blah bla...... blaah
1) they release an app they they feel is incomplete/untested fully. Becuase of this, it has a chance of bricking your phone. If it does brick people's phones, the dev people have an angry mob on their hands.
2) they take the time, make if as user-proof as possible, and make sure as much as they can it won't screw up the hardware. If someone's phone doesnt upgrade correctly, it's probaly something with the user's setup, not the iPwn software. The number of angry users is reduced to the people who probably should've learned more about what's happening in the first place.
I personally on the user side prefer choice 1, as i don't want my iPhone to become an expensive paperweight, don't you? If i was one of the devs, i'd rather have people be antsy and glad at the end result instead caving in and have a bunch of people trashing your name on the 'net because of 'buggy software' that those same people bitched to get rushed out in the first place.
When I think of the time spent with that interface it makes me puke... fucking waste... If you can't type a command in the console what makes you think you should even try modifying the firmware :@
Or just release the "real" tools for people who can use them and continue polishing up the kiddie interface for the dickheads

In the future, I would hope that the dev team, who has billed itself as the one and only official unofficial iphone hacking group, will be more realistic about their release dates. You've got an army of people hitting refresh over and over again, because they are excited, because the dev team made them excited in the first place.
I'm not attacking the dev team. I appreciate the work that the dev team has done for this community, as does everyone else posting here. I am, to reiterate, suggesting that they be more realistic about their release dates.
They're not a software company, and even software companies sometimes don't have specific deadlines and estimate release dates.
Take RapidWeaver 4 for example, they revealed tiny little bits of info and people was like "OH MY GOD WHEN? WHEN?" but the devs gave no estimated release date until a month before it came out.
Another example would be uTorrent, the Mac port doesn't have any deadline and constantly inquiring about it in the forums will result in a "when it's done".
If someone can't handle the wait he should just avoid the blog, and wait for PwnageTool to report that an update is available, or just wait for the news to hit the usual headlines (MacRumors, TUAW, MacNN or whatever).
It's much less painful to just forget about it, be oblivious of every development until it finally arrives, then it will come as a sweet surprise and it will be ready.
Personally I followed everything becuase I don't mind the wait and I really enjoyed the little clues and tidbits (I love how everything fell in place in the end, the bubbles, the Harpo icon, the Einstein Icon, the hands telling how to enter Recovery Mode...) and I don't mind waiting as I didn't mind waiting for the original release and didn't mind to wait for Leopard to come out when it was delayed.
And it's not a lecture, it's a suggestion... I did this with RW4.0 because I couldn't take all the pressure, I just subscribed to the mailing list and forgot about it, after a while I received an update stating it was possible to enter the beta and that's how it went.
TL;DR: patience is a virtue.
So why not throw a few bits of info up on what is taking so long eh? Why not update the blog more frequently? They dont need marketing approval or anything... It just stinks of faggotry.
Besides, all this recent updates are somewhat of the bits of information you'd like to see, yet it upsetted quite a lot of people.
Sure it's not in-depth details of what's going on but besides, what good would lying bring to the dev-team?
They don't accept donations so they don't receive money from excited people.
If they create anticipation don't deliver in time their reputation would be ruined which is something they probably don't want.
The last time they created anticipation they ended up delivering even if they first delayed it, so personally I don't see the problem.
Still, I'm probably not disappointed because I wasn't expecting it to be released so soon.
I can't really answer unless you elaborate that further.
This is the only thing I am criticizing.
Maybe they actually hoped to, but either something got on the way or saw it was possible to add support for the iPhone 3G with a little work and decided to delay it.
I think it would be "forgivable" if they released it after the weekend, they would only be two days late ;)

It is, however, not surprising to see people that are disappointed by this news, as they have been hearing for days that this was going to be waiting for them.
The simple way to have avoided this would have been to let people know what was up, instead of keeping them in the dark.

By the way we don't only know they have 3G Phones (three of them) but the testing on them went well.

Why not distribute via BitTorrent. The more people you have downloading (tons in this case) the more bandwidth you have, and since it is nothing illegal I know a lot of people would be willing to seed for while.
Then if the torrent slows down after a few days go back to traditional hosting.
On the other hand if that is NOT your reason for delaying, take as much time as you need to make sure it is perfect.
And thanks for all your hard work.
Using torrents is the best way to get the app out there without having bandwidth problems on our own servers.
Keep up the good work. There are those of us that appreciate what you're doing, even if we have to wait. These asshats that are bitching are just little babies. Their phones work FINE right now, unless they were retarded and upgraded to 2.0 when they need to be jailbroken/unlocked, and now they can't.
Anyways, though it's not really obvious in most the other comments, I think the majority really do appreciate all the hard work you guys put into the project.

looking for a few days at the minimum possiblities to unlock and JB the 2.0 software of my Iphone bought in february 2008...I have tried some useless ways to unlock the phone...also with mine logical ways, but dint find any...aaarrrghh :) I think you are on the good way to make it done, and to make many ppl happier than they ever had been...there is a Q. if the PWNAGE 2.0 should JB also some Beta release of 2.0 FRMWR...i tried to hack with old one soft PWNAGE 1.1 (incl. 1.0) but it wrotes often errors...
Me not a proffesional in this area of "hacking" so i didnt tried to use any terminal or smt like that, because i am affraid of, my iPhone should die! :)

The sum total of the childish posts of the last day or so could have been made like this:
- we have a working unlock/jailbreak for release #### of the 2.0 firmware, but we want to test it against a retail device. We will be heading out to stores tomorrow to buy a retail device to test and make sure things go as expected.
- heading to the store this morning to pick up retail device
- got device, checking our solution with it to make sure it's safe and works as expected
- everything looks good, we will not be releasing right away as we want to spread to mirrors to ensure everybody has a good chance to download it once we release to the wild. thanks...
All of this cloak and dagger bs, and assembly of incomprehensible comments smacks of you giving yourselves a self congratulatory trip around the bases. Really, you seem to be milking this release for as much silly secrecy as possible in order to obtain the most press you can from the blogs out there.

I'm definitely thankful for the app, I used it the first time around.
But I figured they might treat us a little better than children. Really why all the silliness? They did not do this on their first release, and to be honest their original demeanor is what made me move away from the egotistical one that Zibri seems to exude in every post he makes. The dev team seem to be heading a bit in this 'hey look at us' direction...
The achievement of this software can stand on its' own, they don't need to grandstand. I think many here are ready to heap praise on them based on the the tool alone, so why not just quietly release as they did the first time, and the accolades will most likely flow in. Stop 'milking it'...
And I didn't care for the wait back then either.
It is the silly little inside jokes that I could do without. That is what I meant by a quiet release. The first tool was delayed multiple times yes, but people seemed to be much more understanding when there was a clear adult like message as to why.
I'm done commenting, I've made my point. It is their software indeed, if they want to toy with people before releasing it, that is their prerogative...
The Blog didn't exist yet though, I guess they thought it would be nice to keep people informed/excited/interested/whatever.

Suppose given their track record I should be grateful that they even told us it probably wont be over this weekend...
Fact is you guys made this seem like the app was 100% ready minus some little testing maybe on the 3g model (you weren't even specific on that) so I sat here and wasted my friday and yes I know that's my own fault but when you make it seem like the app would be there any second with your teasing screenshots and your little ploy with gizmodo, I found myself being drawn back time and time again in the hopes that maybe this refresh they would tell me something, anything!
12 hours. Thats how long it took you guys from when you let gizmodo reveal that you had unlocked 2.0 to when you finally revealed that the app wasn't coming until after the weekend.
Think about that next time. Just be strait. I'm very grateful for what you do but I don't like being fucked with.

Who cares what coordinates the individual team members are occupying or the exact percentage of the compile.
Bottom line. The tool is not ready to be released. It may be ready, it might work great, but the TEAM IS NOT READY TO RELEASE THEIR WORK YET. All we can do is deal with it.
Your all very lucky that posting is all the "fun" that they are having. They could have more fun watching each of you all clammer for a release if they decide to keep the tool for themselves.

i for my part will continue to use my iphone 2G and i have no problem with slow GPRS since my german cell company, eplus, only has 3G or GPRS, no EDGE...
and since the WPS coverage in germany is getting better an d better, i have no real need for GPS right now, there's no real navigation software anyways!!! the geotagging works perfectly with WPS and the new XPS 2.0 in the iphone 3G is awesome, but i'm not that much outside of big cities and that means WPS totally cuts it for me!

I think the dev team are being very responsible in not releasing the updated pwnage tool until it is made as foolproof as possible. The (thankfully) few moronic postings on this blog would suggest the lowest common denominator they have in mind when they are thinking of their UI..

SUPPOSEDLY 2.0 works to the point that there are already videos about the fact that it works.
