I got my 3G a few days ago already bored and ready to jail break it - I've been doing lots of reading trying to find out if there is a way to jail break a 3G 2.1 with a PC... i've seen some conflicting articles and I'm not sure which one to listen to... can anyone throw me a bone?

Also anyone know of a good site that explains what i'll be able to do once i've jailbreaked my 3G? Other than 3rd party apps etc..

I'd say editing many, MANY aspects of the phone manually for one. Not one for the n00bs but definately a good feature of a JB iphone. You can do lots more than just add third party apps when you JB.

I've been JB'ing my 2G here in the UK for quite a while now all thanks to the amazing Dev Team. I have a HP Compaq laptop with Vista and OSX86 on dual boot so I used the new 2.1 PwnageTool with 100% success first time.

I can't thank the Dev Team enough for all their hard work and effort, especially considering they do it all FOR FREE and for FUN! Not enough people in the world like you guys!

Keep up the good work fellas... many many of us appreciate it incredibly.

Great work, but as you recommend to Apple, you should think about your priorities...

Pwnage 2.1 is far from working properly for most users. Just google for "pwanage 2.1 error"...

I still don't know a single iPhone 3G user which has succeeded pwning, only 2G or iPod users. I've tested unluckily since Friday... 10 restores by now. Not even with Quickpwn

Hi, I'm on Mac OS 10.5.4, white Macbook 2.4 Gh, 4Gb RAM
My iPhone 3G was running 2.0.2 not pwned before.
I tried pwnage tool 2.1 and created an ispw in expert mode. Ended with itunes 8 refusing to update my firmware (error 2001).
I used again pwnage tool 2.1 and created a ispw in simple mode. Ended same, itunes 8 refusing to update my firmware (error 2001).
Tried this things then:
-Connected to a different USB port in my Macbook. Didn't work
-The iphone refused to work at all, and had to full restore from Itunes 8
-Restarted my computer ( was 2 months uptime... :-( ). Tried again and didn't work (errors 6, 9, 1600 and 2001 in different tries)
-Downloaded Quickpwn 1.1 and tried, but firmware 2.0.2 was not supported by Quickpwn
-Updated firmware to Apple's 2.1 with iTunes
-Tried again with Quickpwn, it seemed to work and I ended with the cat image "I haz succes"... but then the iphone started continuously to restart once and again, vibrating, showing apple logo, some seconds and again the same, cyclically
Had to enter DFU mode and restore with iTunes to Apple's 2.1
I'm available by mail if you need more info.

I can't understand why some users succeed and me and some friends don't...

I had that Quickpwn problem back on 2.0.2, the iPhone would never boot up at the end just vibrate every 5 minutes or so. I figured out it was the App Store apps causing the iPhone not to boot up. When I used Quickpwn on a freshly restored iPhone without any apps from App Store my iPhone jailbroke fine but only 5 mins later for Cydia to crash my iPhone and get stuck on Apple logo at start-up. :-(

I really appreciate the 2.1 release the most. I stopped using the iPhone 2G and was even going to sell it because it was too slow and it was more like a multimedia device with a phone on it with the 2.0.x firmware. But now with the 2.1 release, the iPhone 2G feels more like a phone again. Thanks a lot dev team! I look forward to your future updates ;)

Maybe a guide on what to do and expect i.e loss of apps etc if you have already pwned and upgrading or if pwning for the first time may cut down some of the questions

As for where I bought my Iphone 3g from aus, there are loads selling them on Ebay. I am not going to ad anyones name on e-bay, but there is a cool seller, ordered it 4 days ago, and I have it. Fantastic!!

Its a terminal. From the looks of it I'd say it is some raw connection to the ipod that they plan to use to get keys to learn about decryping/encryping the firmware. Maybe to test out other meathods of JB too. They won't tell you much more, like apple iPDT likes to drop hints until you start banging your head into the wall in anticipation. And unlike apple they don't dissapoint. (I wanted GPS in the 2g touch and a camera)

Hey, I remember reading a while back that if we were wanting to hopefully unlock our phones, that we shouldn't do any of the firmware updates because one of them has a baseband update. Is this still the case? I've been sitting here patiently on 2.0.0. But am wanting to update to 2.1... should I still hold off? Jailbreaking isn't really important to me, just the unlock is.

There isn't anything to say that Apple won't revise hardware contained within a current release of the iPhone 3G, things could change internally without any apparent change to you the user. Experimenting with the iPod touch gives us an insight to the technology that they could be using in upcoming products.

People that buy a locked phone, get it unlocked (presumably paying for this) and then sell them on eBay at inflated prices are vultures IMO - obviously a successful species.

Dev team keep up the good work. You've got to have a life too of course. I sure am looking forward to a 2G ipod jailbreak though. I'm having to give excuses to the husband about why no, he CAN'T have my old one yet! Its too hard to explain that I NEED my third party apps and that the pod feels retarded and dysfunctional without them. It's too hard to explain I can't give him my old one until my new 2G is out of jail. He's getting grumpier by the day because he's wanted this ipod touch of mine ever since I got it, lol. Also I am hoping Cmw gets the windows 1G done soon because I have a custom boot image and I want to try it out. However, like I said, you guys have lives too just like the rest of us. So keep up the good work and on behalf of thousands if not millions of people from all over the world, thank you for what you've done for us and the developers of third party software. :)

I finally had to try to explain it to him. He is not happy. He said, "It's like you took away Christmas!" I promised him it was highly likely the Dev Team would crack it over the weekend.

dear iphone dev team you helped me realized what i want to do for a long time i thought of a bunch of different careers that i could go to engineer, lawyer, and then i had settled on doctor and i had settled on that without real certainty. i had used many other hacks on my iphone regrettably including ziphone. after running your tool when firmware 2.0 came out i was really impressed how you used itunes and apples firmware to hack their own device!! right now im running on 2.1 pwned and have you to thanks. id like to have a carer in computers and more specifically create software id like to start off small by creating an application for the iphone. do you think you can point me to a website that can help me understand code and such. im 15 yrs old and i think i really want a career in software creation

I am also 15 but I have been into programming for quite a few years now. Have a look at Java, having done it for over two years now I am able to create a lot of applications/games with it.

A lot of us are particularly interested in the VoIP possibilities with this device supporting a microphone / speaker headset. Apparently, third party headsets work fine. Clues as to how to access the mic and apply it to Skype, Gizmo or some other VoIP scheme should be thus unveiled.

btw, was trying to figure out how to take a snapshot of my iphone screen. google sent me to apple.com's forum, which game me the answer i was looking for. Its a feature already in the iPhone OS (since 2.0). In case im not the only one who didn't know this: just tap home + power (or hold home then tap power. The screen flashes white and a snapshot is sent to your camera roll.

Just an idea. Maybe someone can pass this along to the big dogs.

Why are jailbreak/native app developers still using .app format? Wouldn't it be better to use .ipa so we can have those apps stored in itunes?

Think about it. This way when you install an app with cydia you can delete it the same way you do a legit app and it will sync with iTunes! Then when you restore or update you just sync it all back. All we need is an app that will modify the mobilinstalation for us just so we don't have people passing around the patched installation and app's converted to .ipa

I think its time we switch standards.

We could even go as far as changing the locations where themes and ROMs are stored so itunes backs them up when we sync!

This defeats the purpose of using apt. You'll have a hard time swaying people away from one of the most widely accepted distribution systems for packages. I see what your saying though, an ipa manager would be pretty cool.

Hi Guys - Can someone tell me the difference between quickPwn and Pwnage? Ive also got a little issue someone might be able to help with. I restored the phone to 2.0.2 then updated to 2.1 (on windows - justr using itunes, I dont have assess to a Mac for 2.1). I have an issue where one SIM card will work (HKCSL) - with a piggyback turbosim but it wont work with a vodafone SIM. I know the voda SIM is fine, It works in my nokia fine? I think Im missing something with the QuickPwn and Pwnage tools? P.S the voda sim wouldnt work when it was on 2.0.2 either -

I just bought my 2G and this is the first time i have iPod touch ..
I have Windows too ..
Please i need to jailbreak it and know nothing about Jailbreak .. so please know that Windows users are waiting you as Mac guys are waiting .....

And for Mac guys, Specially Valyard ..

Who the hell made you a lawyer for Dev Team or a spokeman of them!! .. you just wait like us and hope to Jailbreak 2G .. you even don't code your own!!

hey guys thanks as always for your great efforts with your ipod/iphone work.. i am not trying to bug and understand that there isnt a public jailbreak for the gen 2 ipods yet but have you found a method to insert a modified mobile installation file into the stock firmware yet.. also have you found the passwords for the 018-4160-1.dmg inside the gen 2 2.1.1 firmware, id love to play around with that dmg..

hey, maybe you guys can help. I have always had a problem with my carrier and my iphone. Incoming SMS messages are timestamped in 5 hours behind. I was able to fix this in 1.1.4 with a russian SMS Timefix patch from installer. Nevertheless, they havent updated this patch for 2.x (I am on 2.1). Anybody knows a solution? Currently there is no way. Wait a few week for the dev team to jailbreak it and install haiku's safari patch (something like that) to download files from safari. Or wait for Apple to release 2.2 so you can download music podcasts directly for free ;)

The results were mixed.

Get your hand dirty dud, a working procedure exists and works fine (http://sleepers.net/news/2008/09/12/21-3g-only-...).

Personnaly I didn't reinstall iTunes 7 (steps 4 to 6), as it worked perfectly with 8

I don't agree, they are volunteers. You can't tell the dev-team what to do, they are doing a great job they just need some time.

I got bored of waiting for a 3gUnlock, I think the Dev Team have been beat this time by Apple, Soz to say.

I sold myIphone 3G and bought an officially unlocked one from Australia. Everything works and can use the APP Store to Download etc. Plus updated my phone through Itunes to 2.1 Still Unlocked"""!!!!!!!
