Thanks very much for all you hard work on the unlock. I check the RSS feed regualry to see if you guys have done the deed. I was wondering if you could let us all in on whether the 3G unlock is definately going to happen? I know that you work very hard in your own time to achieve this, but nothing in your blog indicates that you think its going to happen soon, its just a matter of time. Or that you are unsure whether its even possible? I'm sure we would all like to get a considered "opinion" on your chances of success for the hack.

Well just take a quick look at it.

He calls it a 3G unlock, but he doesn't have a 3G iPhone. 99% of the massive zip is simply a custom 2G ipsw made with the devteam pwnagetool, and it causes the IPhone to run the devteam BootNeuter on first boot. Any 2G iPhone that runs BootNeuter like that will already be unlocked (by BootNeuter). And BootNeuter doesn't (yet, if ever) run on a 3G iPhone.

i thought the baseband of the iphone 3g was something hardware based, and that apple can not block the unlock trough software. You guys said that some time ago in a post i dont remember.

Then i dont understand why not to upgrade to 2.2.

I suspect that the exploit to get to the baseband hardware is firmware dependent so while the unlock will work once you have baseband access you cannot get it without a firmware specific exploit.

@frustrated: We have limited time and resources and we prioritize tasks depending on what hardware we have, not all of us have the iPod Touch 2G but lots of us have the iPhone 3G, so jailbreaking isn't top of the list at the moment. If you don't like this, please work on this device yourself, jailbreak it and then share the technique with the rest of us. We don't owe you anything.

@borgqueenx I think you are referring to the iPhone 2G. With the iPhone 2G we believe that the entire GSM baseband module in the original iPhone (2G) has been compromised so completely that any updates by Apple would be reversible by us.
This most certainly is *not* the case with the iPhone 3G baseband, any techniques and exploits that we have against the iPhone 3G baseband are tested on release firmware and would be currently valid, but we don't know what Apple will be releasing exactly with the 2.2 update (or with any update in the future) so it is wise not to update without seeking advice from us first (if you care about the possibility of a software unlock in the near future).

Keep in mind we're not saying you can't ever update to 2.2 firmware if you're interested in the 3G unlock. Just that you have to do it via pwnage with the baseband update *disabled*. That's not an option with the official Apple ipsw, so you should stay away from that ipsw if you ultimately want a 3G unlock.

With pwnage, we've put firmware 2.2beta2 on a 3G iPhone and kept the baseband at 1.45, and the apps all work normally.

Inside the iPhone there is an application processor and a baseband processor. The application processor deals with the UI, applications, etc.etc. and the baseband processor deals with the calls, data and SMS. They really are two small computers inside running separate operating systems that communicate over a communications bus inside the iPhone. Kinda like a computer connected to a modem. Jailbreaking refers to hacking the application processor so that we can run any software on that side of the iPhone and unlocking refers to modifying the baseband processor so that we can do what we like there. Apple providing updates to the baseband processor causes headaches as it means that any public exploits or techniques we use to run code (that wasn't meant to be run there) are usually thwarted, we don't really know for sure what is coming with the 2.2 update as it could differ from any beta release we've heard about, so it is better to be safe than sorry ;)

Yeah 01.45.00 is what the 3G first shipped with. In 2.2beta2 it's at 02.25.01. The baseband version increases faster than any other updates that Apple pushes out.

Yes...what we're doing now is running compiled C-code on the baseband, as opposed to patching the existing baseband code.

I'm happy that they are working on jailbreaking these products for free but aren't you in the least bit chewed that they said they aren't even worried about jailbreaking the iTouch at the moment? Part of the reason I bought an iTouch in the first place was because I was so stoked at jailbreaking it. Meh, guess I'll just have to wait but it doesn't mean I'm not the least bit disappointed.

Hmmmm, i understand aprox. 1/10 of the tech talk from dev team but im sure there are ppl out there with great interest in the "technical reveals" on the progress, but here is a thought, doesnt your generous posts of your proceedings really present a perfect way for apple to see what you are doing?

Your baseband looks like it's from 2.0.1-b103. So yes, you're in a good position as long as you don't upgrade to 2.2 when it comes out.

When (or if) the unlock is released, is it only likely to work on 1.45 baseband?
The silence switch broke off my iPhone an they said that they could replace it, but wouldnt repair it. Of course this means I'll end up with the new firmware when I've done such a great job of avoiding all the updates.
Is any kind of downgrade solution likely? Is that something that's being worked on?

first off let me give giant kudos to everyone who helped make the programs to help people like me (with no computer hacking skills what so ever) unlock there iphone, without ya'll i'd still be stuck with at&t, so THANK YOU VERY MUCH. second, i'm not complaining i'm very greatful but i ran the program 2 times and thought the phone was unlocked but everytime i put a tmobile sim card in it the connect to i tunes screen came up so i connected to i tunes and the message sim card not valid came up. so i restored it again. 3rd time i ran the quick prwn program i put the sim card in and ran it. everything works great and i am now on the t-mobile network. has anyone else had this problem? are you supposed to put the sim card in and run the program, because the step by step never said to put the sim in first. anywho you guys are fn awesome and i am happy as fu**. thanks again

My doubt is, of course 3G baeband is another story, but i would like to know if i'm save with this baseband version, for a future possible unlock of it.

Greetings Dev team from Venezuela, I just bought an iPod touch 2g, and I hope that when you guys will be able to jailbreak the 3G, you will start working on the iPod touch 2g ... because of what I've been reading the problem is the new hardware, and because of this, the new models of iPhones/iPod's could come with this new hardware and I think it's pretty important to develop some kind of jailbreak for this new barrier. Yes.

There's nothing in any iPod Touch 2G updates that can affect your ability to do some future (if any) hack.

It's only the baseband present in iPhone updates that has the "don't use this if you want future hacks" aspect to it.

Maybe it would be a help for everyone if you could explain the differences between the touch and iphone firmware a bit more in detail. I mean there must be a reason why it is possible for you to show screen shoots of a terminal in the 2.2 firmware on a iphone but not on a touch. and that must be more than just "because only a few have it."
